The Eastern Kentucky Coalfield is part of the Central Appalachian bituminous coalfield, including all or parts of 30 Kentucky counties and adjoining areas in Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee. It covers an area from the Allegheny Mountains in the east across the Cumberland Plateau to the Pottsville Escarpment in the west. The region is known for its coal mining; most family farms in the region have disappeared since the introduction of surface mining in the 1940s and 1950s.
The Daniel Boone National Forest is located on rough but beautiful terrain along and east of the Pottsville Escarpment. There are many natural arches and sandstone cliffs that are excellent for rock climbing and rappeling. The Red River Gorge, part of the National Forest, is known worldwide in rock climbing circles.
The Sheltowee Trace Trail runs 420–430 km north and south through the region.
During the American Civil War most of this region leaned toward the Union due to its makeup at the time of mostly small farmers, but more than 2,000 men from this area formed the 5th. Kentucky Vol. Inf., known as the Army of Eastern Kentucky, under Gen. Humphrey Marshall, C.S.A. During the Great Depression, New Deal programs and the organizing of the United Mine Workers of America made many of the eastern counties Democratic.
Kentucky (i/kənˈtʌki/, kən-TU-kee), officially the Commonwealth of Kentucky, is a state located in the east south-central region of the United States. Kentucky is one of four U.S. states constituted as a commonwealth (the others being Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts). Originally a part of Virginia, in 1792 Kentucky became the 15th state to join the Union. Kentucky is the 37th most extensive and the 26th most populous of the 50 United States.
Kentucky is known as the "Bluegrass State", a nickname based on the bluegrass found in many of its pastures due to the fertile soil. One of the major regions in Kentucky is the Bluegrass Region in central Kentucky which houses two of its major cities, Louisville and Lexington. It is a land with diverse environments and abundant resources, including the world's longest cave system, Mammoth Cave National Park, the greatest length of navigable waterways and streams in the contiguous United States, and the two largest man-made lakes east of the Mississippi River.

When you think of extreme poverty, you may tend to think of people overseas, or in far away places. The reality is, there are many struggling right here in our own back yard. Tucked in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky are communities of people who are struggling every day for enough to meet their basic needs. In order to help and love these people, someone would have to live along side of them, teaching and helping them on a daily basis. The Happy Church is a community doing just that. Check out how the Happy Church is showing Christ love through ordinary acts of love. Godfire Apparel is proud to be partnering with and giving proceeds from our apparel to help fuel the Happy Church as they live out this incredible story. In the deep dark hills of eastern Kentucky That's the place where I trace my bloodline And it's there I read on a hillside gravestone You will never leave Harlan alive Oh, my granddad's dad walked down Katahrins Mountain And he asked Tillie Helton to be his bride Said, won't you walk with me out of the mouth Of this holler Or we'll never leave Harlan alive Where the sun comes up about ten in the morning And the sun goes down about three in the day And you fill your cup with whatever bitter brew you're drinking And you spend your life just thinkin' of how to get away No one ever knew there was coal in them mountains 'Til a man from the Northeast arrived Waving hundred dollar bills he said I'll pay ya for your minerals But he never left Harlan alive Granny sold out cheap and they moved ...

This video shows how some of the areas in Eastern Kentucky look. It doesn't really do justice to how pretty parts of it can be or how run down other parts are. To really get an idea you would need to take a trip out there and take a few days driving around the back roads. The first time I went out to the area was in 2009 to record some things with a company called Kertis Creative. I was amazed as to how different the landscape was compared to other places I have lived throughout my life. Over the next 3 years I traveled to the region a few more times on other video shoots, most recently with Videobred and kept thinking I would like a way to show other people what the area looks like. In 2012 I became very interested in timelapses and realized that this type of video does a decent job...
Prescription drug abuse continues to take a deadly toll on Eastern Kentucky, but Kentucky State Police say methamphetamine remains nearly as prevalent and addictive.
