Brooklyn Park, Minnesota - Video from a squad car showing a vicious attack on a Brooklyn Park police officer last November is now public.
It reveals a desperate struggle to survive as a man wanted on an outstanding felony warrant grabs for the officer’s gun. The video released Thursday captures the officer’s screams for help as 25-year-old Lance Carr begins punching, choking and wrestling with officer Sean Hyman.
Hennepin County jurors watched the compelling video and convicted Carr of felony assault of a police officer.
Just minutes after officer Sean Hyman stopped a white car on a noise complaint, he learns the driver, Carr, is wanted on a felony theft warrant.
“He asked Carr to step out of the vehicle and place his hands behind his back,” Brooklyn Park Police Chief Chief Craig Enevoldsen said.
But when officer Hyman attempts the arrest, trouble begins. Carr suddenly turns and repeatedly punches Hyman. The two lock in a struggle and fall to the ground.
“At that point I think he (Hyman) knows or determines that this is a fight for his life,” Enevoldsen said.
On Thursday, law enforcement released the nine-minute video to show the public why no police officer’s stop is ever routine. Officer Hyman is on patrol alone that night and begins screaming help. At that point, neighbors hear his screams and call 911 for police backup.
You can hear citizens screaming at Carr to get off the officer, but to no avail.
“Had officer Hyman not done some of the things he had done to get additional help, I think this ends much differently,” Enevoldsen said.
But before that help arrives, Hyman fires his gun but misses Carr. There’s a struggle for Hyman’s pistol, and he ejects the clip, rendering it unable to fire additional rounds.
Finally, three minutes after the struggle begins, sirens are heard and backup arrives.
But even then, Carr doesn’t stop his assault of Hyman. It took a shot fired from a police officer’s Taser gun and the tackling of three other officers to do that.
“This could have had a very different outcome if the officers had not arrived when they did and/or the citizens had not intervened how they chose to intervene that night,” Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said.
Officer Hyman was off the job for 16 days after the incident – he’s now back on patrol.
Sentencing for Lance Carr will be June 17, where he could face a penalty of between 10 to 20 years for the first-degree felony assault of officer Hyman.

In the early hours of Sept. 28, a man in a parking lot was pointing a BB gun at a Fargo police officer. Yelling at the top of his lungs, the officer repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon, to no avail. The encounter ended with the officer, Patrick Thomas, shooting the man with the BB pistol, 31-year-old Karmen Redshirt. Authorities said the pistol had a laser light and looked like a real handgun.
The camera system in Thomas' squad car captured the video that shows the officer pulling into the parking lot of the Pizza Hut at 4701 13th Ave. S., near the Fargo Wal-Mart. Thomas steps out of the car and right away starts shouting at Redshirt, telling him he'll be fired upon if he doesn't drop the gun. The video shows that Thomas spent close to 40 seconds trying to convince Redshirt to drop the gun. Ultimately, Thomas fired three shots. One round hit Redshirt in the abdomen, causing a wound that required surgery and months of recovery.
Cass County State's Attorney Birch Burdick reviewed an investigation of the shooting done by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and he declined to file criminal charges against Thomas. The Fargo Police Department's internal review of the shooting found that Thomas' use of force was justified. Redshirt's brother, Cody Redshirt, has questioned Thomas' decision to shoot his brother and to fire three rounds.
The shooting came after Redshirt led police on a chase in a stolen car. Redshirt's blood-alcohol level that morning was 0.279 percent, authorities said. The legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent. Redshirt, of Bismarck, pleaded guilty to felony charges of theft, reckless endangerment and two counts of terrorizing, as well as a misdemeanor charge of refusing to halt. Redshirt was sentenced last month to four years in prison and three years of supervised probation. He's being held at the North Dakota State Penitentiary.

This little girl might have died if this officer didn't carry her to safety from what was a deadly apartment fire. That was in 1998. Now, the two of them can be seen smiling together at her college graduation. Josie Aponte from Hartford, Connecticut was 5-years-old at the time and still cries about that terrible day. In 2014, she had the courage to message her hero on Facebook. The two have been friends ever since.

POV Vlog of a motor officer riding point in a Police funeral procession...
I recorded this footage on November 6th 2014 during the escort and funeral services for my good friend, Pomona Police Officer Shaun Diamond. He was killed in the line of duty on October 29th, 2014.
I was honored by being taken in by the Pomona Police Motors to ride directly in front of the coach that was transporting Shaun. I filled in for another friend and partner, Motor Officer Eli Linn who himself had passed away earlier in the year.
At times during this procession, I struggled to see through the stream of tears that ran down my face inside my helmet. The outpouring of love and support from the City Of Pomona and the community was truly moving.... The hundreds of children that lined the route of the funeral procession, most with their hands over their hearts was something that I'll never ever forget.
As I upload this video on the evening of National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day, I reflect on those who are no longer with us that I have had the pleasure and honor of working with over the last 21 years. Amazing people we have lost along the way... People who have helped me become the person I am today.
I took Shaun's death especially hard, as did many others... He was a truly special person.
I'll never forget how he was the first person at my side on a warm August night in 1998 when I needed help, and someone to tell me that everything was going to be ok... Shaun was that kind of "go-to-guy".. He was there for me.
To Shaun's family, friends and coworkers, I carry his memory with me every single day that I put on that uniform. I'll never forget him. He was a great man.

Yelling at the top of his lungs, the officer repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon, to no avail. The encounter ended with the officer, Patrick Thomas, shooting the man with the BB pistol, 31-year-old Karmen Redshirt. Authorities said the pistol had a laser light and looked like a real handgun. The camera system in Thomas' squad car captured the video that shows the officer pulling into the parking lot of the Pizza Hut at 4701 13th Ave. S., near the Fargo Wal-Mart. Thomas steps out of the car and right away starts shouting at Redshirt, telling him he'll be fired upon if he doesn't drop the gun. The video shows that Thomas spent close to 40 seconds trying to convince Redshirt to drop the gun. Ultimately, Thomas fired three shots. One round hit Redshirt in the abdomen, causing a wound that required surgery and months of recovery. Cass County State's Attorney Birch Burdick reviewed an investigation of the shooting done by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and he declined to file criminal charges against Thomas. The Fargo Police Department's internal review of the shooting found that Thomas' use of force was justified. Redshirt's brother, Cody Redshirt, has questioned Thomas' decision to shoot his brother and to fire three rounds. The shooting came after Redshirt led police on a chase in a stolen car. Redshirt's blood-alcohol level that morning was 0.279 percent, authorities said. The legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent. Redshirt, of Bismarck, pleaded guilty to felony charges of theft, reckless endangerment and two counts of terrorizing, as well as a misdemeanor charge of refusing to halt. Redshirt was sentenced last month to four years in prison and three years of supervised probation. POV Vlog of a motor officer riding point in a Police funeral procession... I recorded this footage on November 6th 2014 during the escort and funeral services for my good friend, Pomona Police Officer Shaun Diamond. He was killed in the line of duty on October 29th, 2014. I was honored by being taken in by the Pomona Police Motors to ride directly in front of the coach that was transporting Shaun. I filled in for another friend and partner, Motor Officer Eli Linn who himself had passed away earlier in the year. At times during this procession, I struggled to see through the stream of tears that ran down my face inside my helmet. The outpouring of love and support from the City Of Pomona and the community was truly moving.... The hundreds of children that lined the route of the funeral procession, most with their hands over their hearts was something that I'll never ever forget. As I upload this video on the evening of National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day, I reflect on those who are no longer with us that I have had the pleasure and honor of working with over the last 21 years. Amazing people we have lost along the way... People who have helped me become the person I am today. I took Shaun's death especially hard, as did many others... He was a truly special person. I'll never forget how he was the first person at my side on a warm August night in 1998 when I needed help, and someone to tell me that everything was going to be ok... Shaun was that kind of "go-to-guy".. He was there for me. To Shaun's family, friends and coworkers, I carry his memory with me every single day that I put on that uniform. I'll never forget him. He was a great man. Brooklyn Park, Minnesota - Video from a squad car showing a vicious attack on a Brooklyn Park police officer last November is now public.
It reveals a desperate struggle to survive as a man wanted on an outstanding felony warrant grabs for the officer’s gun. The video released Thursday captures the officer’s screams for help as 25-year-old Lance Carr begins punching, choking and wrestling with officer Sean Hyman.
Hennepin County jurors watched the compelling video and convicted Carr of felony assault of a police officer.
Just minutes after officer Sean Hyman stopped a white car on a noise complaint, he learns the driver, Carr, is wanted on a felony theft warrant.
“He asked Carr to step out of the vehicle and place his hands behind his back,” Brooklyn Park Police Chief Chief Craig Enevoldsen said.
But when officer Hyman attempts the arrest, trouble begins. Carr suddenly turns and repeatedly punches Hyman. The two lock in a struggle and fall to the ground.
“At that point I think he (Hyman) knows or determines that this is a fight for his life,” Enevoldsen said.
On Thursday, law enforcement released the nine-minute video to show the public why no police officer’s stop is ever routine. Officer Hyman is on patrol alone that night and begins screaming help. At that point, neighbors hear his screams and call 911 for police backup.
You can hear citizens screaming at Carr to get off the officer, but to no avail.
“Had officer Hyman not done some of the things he had done to get additional help, I think this ends much differently,” Enevoldsen said.
But before that help arrives, Hyman fires his gun but misses Carr. There’s a struggle for Hyman’s pistol, and he ejects the clip, rendering it unable to fire additional rounds.
Finally, three minutes after the struggle begins, sirens are heard and backup arrives.
But even then, Carr doesn’t stop his assault of Hyman. It took a shot fired from a police officer’s Taser gun and the tackling of three other officers to do that.
“This could have had a very different outcome if the officers had not arrived when they did and/or the citizens had not intervened how they chose to intervene that night,” Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said.
Officer Hyman was off the job for 16 days after the incident – he’s now back on patrol.
Sentencing for Lance Carr will be June 17, where he could face a penalty of between 10 to 20 years for the first-degree felony assault of officer Hyman.

In the early hours of Sept. 28, a man in a parking lot was pointing a BB gun at a Fargo police officer. Yelling at the top of his lungs, the officer repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon, to no avail. The encounter ended with the officer, Patrick Thomas, shooting the man with the BB pistol, 31-year-old Karmen Redshirt. Authorities said the pistol had a laser light and looked like a real handgun.
The camera system in Thomas' squad car captured the video that shows the officer pulling into the parking lot of the Pizza Hut at 4701 13th Ave. S., near the Fargo Wal-Mart. Thomas steps out of the car and right away starts shouting at Redshirt, telling him he'll be fired upon if he doesn't drop the gun. The video shows that Thomas spent close to 40 seconds trying to convince Redshirt to drop the gun. Ultimately, Thomas fired three shots. One round hit Redshirt in the abdomen, causing a wound that required surgery and months of recovery.
Cass County State's Attorney Birch Burdick reviewed an investigation of the shooting done by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and he declined to file criminal charges against Thomas. The Fargo Police Department's internal review of the shooting found that Thomas' use of force was justified. Redshirt's brother, Cody Redshirt, has questioned Thomas' decision to shoot his brother and to fire three rounds.
The shooting came after Redshirt led police on a chase in a stolen car. Redshirt's blood-alcohol level that morning was 0.279 percent, authorities said. The legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent. Redshirt, of Bismarck, pleaded guilty to felony charges of theft, reckless endangerment and two counts of terrorizing, as well as a misdemeanor charge of refusing to halt. Redshirt was sentenced last month to four years in prison and three years of supervised probation. He's being held at the North Dakota State Penitentiary.

The shooting came after Redshirt led police on a chase in a stolen car. Redshirt's blood-alcohol level that morning was 0.279 percent, authorities said. The legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent. Redshirt, of Bismarck, pleaded guilty to felony charges of theft, reckless endangerment and two counts of terrorizing, as well as a misdemeanor charge of refusing to halt. Redshirt was sentenced last month to four years in prison and three years of supervised probation. He's being held at the North Dakota State Penitentiary.

I recorded this footage on November 6th 2014 during the escort and funeral services for my good friend, Pomona Police Officer Shaun Diamond. He was killed in the line of duty on October 29th, 2014.
I was honored by being taken in by the Pomona Police Motors to ride directly in front of the coach that was transporting Shaun. I filled in for another friend and partner, Motor Officer Eli Linn who himself had passed away earlier in the year.
At times during this procession, I struggled to see through the stream of tears that ran down my face inside my helmet. The outpouring of love and support from the City Of Pomona and the community was truly moving.... The hundreds of children that lined the route of the funeral procession, most with their hands over their hearts was something that I'll never ever forget.
As I upload this video on the evening of National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day, I reflect on those who are no longer with us that I have had the pleasure and honor of working with over the last 21 years. Amazing people we have lost along the way... People who have helped me become the person I am today.
I took Shaun's death especially hard, as did many others... He was a truly special person.
I'll never forget how he was the first person at my side on a warm August night in 1998 when I needed help, and someone to tell me that everything was going to be ok... Shaun was that kind of "go-to-guy".. He was there for me.
To Shaun's family, friends and coworkers, I carry his memory with me every single day that I put on that uniform. I'll never forget him. He was a great man.
