Iain Glen (born 24 June 1961) is a Scottish film, television, and stage actor. Glen is best known for his roles in the Resident Evil films and for portraying Ser Jorah Mormont on Game of Thrones.
Iain Glen was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and educated at the Edinburgh Academy, an independent school for boys (now co-educational), followed by the University of Aberdeen. He then trained at RADA in London, where he won the Bancroft Gold Medal.
In 1990, Glen won the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the 40th Berlin International Film Festival for his role in Silent Scream. In the same year he was cast as Hamlet, Prince of Denmark in Tom Stoppard's film adaptation of his play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. He was nominated for an Olivier Award for his performance in The Blue Room opposite Nicole Kidman.
It was announced in 2009 that Glen would star as Ser Jorah Mormont in the HBO series Game of Thrones. In 2010, he played the role of Father Octavian, leader of a sect of clerics who were on a mission against the Weeping Angels in "The Time of Angels" and "Flesh and Stone", a two-episode story which formed part of the fifth season of the revived television series Doctor Who. He appeared in the second series of Downton Abbey, as Sir Richard Carlisle, a tabloid publisher who is a suitor to, and subsequently engaged to, Lady Mary.
Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created by showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin's series of fantasy novels, the first of which is titled A Game of Thrones. It is filmed in a Belfast studio and on location elsewhere in Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, Northern Ireland, Spain, Scotland, and the United States, and premiered on HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011. The series has been renewed for a sixth season, which will premiere on April 24, 2016.
The series is set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, and interweaves several plot lines with a large ensemble cast. The first narrative arc follows a civil war among several noble houses for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms; the second covers the attempts to reclaim the throne by the exiled last scion of the realm's deposed ruling dynasty; the third chronicles the rising threat of the impending winter and the legendary creatures and fierce peoples of the North.
A glen is a valley, typically one that is long, deep, and often glacially U-shaped, or one with a watercourse running through it. Whittow defines it as a "Scottish term for a deep valley in the Highlands" that is "narrower than a strath".
The word is Goidelic in origin: gleann in Irish and Scottish Gaelic, glion in Manx. In Manx, glan is also to be found meaning glen. It is cognate with Welsh glyn. The word is sometimes found in tautological placenames where its meaning was opaque to a new linguistic community, an example perhaps being Glendale (literally "valley valley") which is a combination of Norse "dale" and Gaelic "glen".
As the name of a river, it is thought to derive from the Irish word glan meaning clean, or the Welsh word gleindid meaning purity. An example is the Glens of Antrim in Northern Ireland where nine glens radiate out from the Antrim plateau to the sea along the coast between Ballycastle and Larne.
In the Finger Lakes Region of New York State, the southern ends of Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake in particular are etched with glens, although in this region the term "glen" refers most frequently to a narrow gorge, as opposed to a wider valley or strath. The steep hills surrounding these lakes are filled with loose shale from glacial moraines. This material has eroded over the past 10,000 years to produce rocky glens (e.g. Watkins Glen and Treman State Parks) and waterfalls (e.g., Taughannock Falls) as rainfall has descended toward the lakes below.
My Cousin is a 1918 American silent drama film directed by Edward José and written by Margaret Turnbull. The film stars Enrico Caruso, Henry Leone, Carolina White, Joseph Riccardi, A.G. Corbelle, and Bruno Zirato. The film was released on November 24, 1918, by Paramount Pictures.
As described in a film magazine, Tommasso Longo (Caruso), a poor artist making his living modeling plaster casts, proudly boasts that he is a cousin of Caroli (also Caruso), the great tenor, whom he greatly resembles. Tommasso is in love with Rosa Ventura (White), a cashier in her father's restaurant, and although she flirts with Roberto Lombardi (Leone), she loves Tommasso. They go to the opera together, and Roberto becomes jealous and ridicules Tommasso's claim of a relationship to the tenor. Caroli comes to the restaurant where Tommasso and Rosa are dining after the show. As Caroli leaves he fails to recognize a relative in Tommasso. Rosa becomes indigent at Tommasso and refuses listen any further to his vows of devotion. Determined to square himself in the eyes of his sweetheart, he goes to the apartment of the great tenor but is politely sent home. Ludovico (Bray), an errand boy in Tommasso's studio, goes to Caroli and reveals the truth to him. Caroli pays his cousin a visit at his studio and directs him to finish a bust of him. With the blessing of Caroli upon them, the love of Rosa is once more won.
Jorah Mormont, nicknamed Jorah the Andal is a fictional character in the A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels by American author George R. R. Martin, and its television adaptation Game of Thrones.
Introduced in 1996's A Game of Thrones, Jorah is the only son of Jeor Mormont, the honorable lord of Bear Island, an ancient Island in the North of the fictional kingdom of Westeros. He subsequently appeared in Martin's A Clash of Kings (1998), A Storm of Swords (2000) and A Dance with Dragons (2011).
Jorah is portrayed by Iain Glen in the HBO television adaptation.
Ser Jorah Mormont, son of the Night's Watch's Lord Commander Jeor Mormont, originally was the ruler of Bear Island, which as the name suggests is an island of the west coast of northern Westeros. After Jorah won his spurs as a knight for valour shown during the suppression of the Greyjoy rebellion, he courted and won the hand of the beautiful Lynesse Hightower of Oldtown. The marriage was not a happy one, as Lynesse found herself ill-suited to the rough life on Bear Island, longing for the splendour and comfort of her youth in Oldtown. Ser Jorah bankrupted himself trying to provide her with luxuries, and in the end his desperate need made him sell some poachers to slavers. Slavery is a crime in Westeros, and ser Jorah lost everything. His liege lord, Eddard Stark, condemned him to death, but Ser Jorah and his wife fled to the Free Cities rather than face his judgement. There, he made his living as a mercenary sellsword, but was soon abandoned by his wife for a rich man who could provide her with the luxuries she craved.

This is my fanvid about the relation ship of Francesca (Polly Walker) and Paul Miller (Iain Glen), my two favourite characters on the BBC drama series Prisoner's Wives. If you havn't already, watch this show! It is so cleverly written and the acting is first class. And of course Iain Glen (Jorah Mormont - Game Of Thrones) is superb in it. Disclamer: No copyright infringement is intended. I don't make any money of these vids - I own neither the clips, nor the song.
