Paul Leroy Robeson (/ˈroʊbsən/; April 9, 1898 – January 23, 1976) was an American singer and actor who became involved with the Civil Rights Movement. At Rutgers College, he was an outstanding football player, then had an international career in singing, with a distinctive, powerful, deep bass voice, as well as acting in theater and movies. He became politically involved in response to the Spanish Civil War, fascism, and social injustices. His advocacy of anti-imperialism, affiliation with communism, and criticism of the United States government caused him to be blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Ill health forced him into retirement from his career.
Robeson won an academic scholarship to Rutgers College, where he became a football All-American and the class valedictorian. He received his LL.B. from Columbia Law School, while playing in the National Football League (NFL). At Columbia, he sang and acted in off-campus productions; and, after graduating, he became a participant in the Harlem Renaissance with performances in The Emperor Jones and All God's Chillun Got Wings. Robeson initiated his international artistic résumé with a theatrical role in Great Britain, settling in London for the next several years with his wife Essie.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Russian: Сою́з Сове́тских Социалисти́ческих Респу́блик, tr. Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik; IPA: [sɐˈjus sɐˈvʲɛtskʲɪx sətsɨəlʲɪsˈtʲitɕɪskʲɪx rʲɪˈspublʲɪk]) abbreviated to USSR (Russian: СССР, tr. SSSR) or shortened to the Soviet Union (Russian: Сове́тский Сою́з, tr. Sovetskij Soyuz; IPA: [sɐ'vʲetskʲɪj sɐˈjʉs]), was a Marxist–Leninist state on the Eurasian continent that existed between 1922 and 1991. A union of multiple subnational Soviet republics, its government and economy were highly centralized. The Soviet Union was a one-party state, governed by the Communist Party with Moscow as its capital.
Joe Hill, born Joel Emmanuel Hägglund in Gävle, Sweden, and also known as Joseph Hillström (October 7, 1879 – November 19, 1915) was a Swedish-American labor activist, songwriter, and member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW, familiarly called the "Wobblies"). A native Swedish speaker, he learned English during the early 1900s, while working various jobs from New York to San Francisco. Hill, an immigrant worker frequently facing unemployment and underemployment, became a popular songwriter and cartoonist for the radical union. His most famous songs include "The Preacher and the Slave" (in which he coined the phrase "pie in the sky"), "The Tramp", "There is Power in a Union", "The Rebel Girl", and "Casey Jones—the Union Scab", which express the harsh and combative life of itinerant workers, and call for workers to organize their efforts to improve working conditions.
In 1914, John G. Morrison, a Salt Lake City area grocer and former policeman, and his son were shot and killed by two men. The same evening, Hill arrived at a doctor's office with a gunshot wound, and briefly mentioned a fight over a woman. Yet Hill refused to explain further, even after he was accused of the grocery store murders on the basis of his injury. Hill was convicted of the murders in a controversial trial. Following an unsuccessful appeal, political debates, and international calls for clemency from high-profile figures and workers' organizations, Hill was executed in November 1915. After his death, he was memorialized by several folk songs. His life and death have inspired books and poetry.
Carnegie Hall (/ˈkɑːrnᵻɡi/, also frequently /kɑːrˈneɪɡi/ or /kɑːrˈnɛɡi/) is a concert venue in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, United States, located at 881 Seventh Avenue, occupying the east stretch of Seventh Avenue between West 56th Street and West 57th Street, two blocks south of Central Park.
Designed by architect William Burnet Tuthill and built by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1891, it is one of the most prestigious venues in the world for both classical music and popular music. Carnegie Hall has 3,671 seats, divided among its three auditoriums.
Carnegie Hall presented about 200 concerts in the 2008–2009 season, up 3 percent from the previous year. Its stages were rented for an additional 600 events in the 2008–2009 season.

Paul Robeson:Ballad for Americans
Extract from Mining Review 2nd Year No. 11 (1949) The highlight of this 1949 issue is the visit of American actor and singer Paul Robeson to Woolmet Colliery near Edinburgh. Robeson was also a renowned (and often persecuted) left-wing political activist and he made several visits to British mining communities. On this occasion he sings "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night" for miners in the canteen, a song about an American trade unionist who was allegedly framed on a murder charge and executed in 1915. Robeson had long been something of a hero to the British mining community, ever since he starred in the film Proud Valley (d. Pen Tennyson, 1940) as an American sailor stranded in Cardiff who finds work in a Welsh colliery (the newsreel opens with a short clip from the film).
The words of Old Man River were (thankfully) to change many times since the original version was written by Hammerstein and Kerr. The first line "Niggers all work on the Mississippi etc" moved on to "Darkies all work..." and eventually through being "The old Man I'd like to be" it eventually became "The Old Man I don't like to be". Sidney Poitier explains other changes within the song.

The Warsaw Ghetto Rebellion - April 19 - May 16, 1943 Sung by Paul Robeson at the 1949 Moscow Concert (live) in Yiddish and historical pictures of the burning of the Ghetto by the Germans. This famous song was sung by Robeson as part of his legendary Moscow Concert of June 13, 1949.which Paul Robeson gave while on his tour in the Soviet Union, at the time under the Stalin oppressive dictatorship. This song was sung by him as a tribute to the Jewish partisan fighters of the Ghetto. It was also a surprise that Robeson gave at the Concert. His son tells of the introduction of the song from his father's memoirs that: "... One could hear a pin drop during my father remarks about the deep and enduring cultural ties between the Jewish communities of the Soviet Union and the United States, ...

The national anthem of the USSR between 1944 and 1991, performed here by American bass singer Paul Robeson. Prior to 1944 the Soviet Union anthem had been The Internationale - however it was replaced in the midst of the 'Great Patriotic War' (the USSR's bitter fight against Nazi Germany) to reflect its struggle as a nation. Like other Soviet propaganda it refers to and links Lenin and Stalin, although this part of the anthem was relegated after Stalin's death in 1953. The lyrics were written by Bolshevik author Sergey Mikhalkov, who was hand-picked for the task by Stalin in 1942. Almost sixty years later Mikhalkov was chosen by Vladimir Putin to pen lyrics for the same tune to constitute a new national anthem for Russia. Paul Robeson was one of America's best light operatic singers, most ...
Once in a lifetime a human being comes along who stands head and shoulders above the rest. Paul Robeson was such a man. An all-American athlete, scholar, international recording artist and star of the stage and screen, in his day Robeson was the best-known African American entertainer in the world, and his life was a courageous example of integrity in the service of peace. The story of this American hero who struggled and triumphed comes alive in a rousing new 90-minute live stage show performed by the gifted American baritone and international ambassador of peace, Anthony Brown. Accompanied by a pianist, narrator, and archival video, Brown reveals Robeson as a towering figure in American history and a champion for peace and human rights for much of the 20th Century. He was a forerunner of black consciousness and awareness and the first African-American to insist on playing dignified roles in films. King Solomon's Mines is a 1937 British adventure film directed by Robert Stevenson and starring Paul Robeson, Cedric Hardwicke, Anna Lee, John Loder and Roland Young. The first of five film adaptations of the 1885 novel of the same name by Henry Rider Haggard, the film was produced by the Gaumont British Picture Corporation at Lime Grove Studios in Shepherd's Bush. Sets were designed by art director Alfred Junge. Although versions of King Solomon's Mines were released in 1950 and 1985, this film is considered to be the most faithful to the book. In 1882, Irish dream chaser Patrick "Patsy" O'Brien (Arthur Sinclair) and his daughter Kathy (Anna Lee) have failed to strike it rich in the diamond mines of Kimberley, South Africa. They persuade a reluctant Allan Quartermain (Sir Cedric Hardwick...

Renowned historian and educator Dr. Gerald Horne presenting at New York University on April 29, 2016 about his new biography of Paul Robeson
I certainly don't fancy myself a vocalist. However, in order to pay homage to one of my early childhood heroes (actor/vocalist Paul Robeson), I decided to give it a shot. Robeson's deep voice (with rapidly fluctuating vibrato) exuded a defiant dignity. We are kindred spirits in this regard, indeed. I thank my grandmother for regularly playing his albums and movies for me since I was 5 years old. :-) The first two songs (Peace Within & Love of Life) are from my second album for music industry icon Quincy Jones entitled "The Force." The last two songs (In The Gutta & Get Out!) are from my first album for Mr. Jones entitled "In The Gutta." All four are my original compositions. Musicians (Tracks 1 & 2): Jeff "Tain" Watts (Drums), Reginald Veal (Bass), Ed Kelly (Piano) Tracks 3 & 4: La...

Paul Robeson - Black Historian Paul Robeson was a Famous African-American Athlete, Singer, Actor, and Advocate for the Civil Rights of People around the world. He rose to prominence in a time when segregation was legal in the United States, and Black people were being lynched by racist mobs, especially in the South. Born on April 9, 1898 in Princeton, New Jersey, Paul Robeson was the youngest of five children. His father was a runaway slave who went on to graduate from Lincoln University, and his mother came from an abolitionist Quaker family. Robeson's family knew both hardship and the determination to rise above it. His own life was no less challenging. In 1915, Paul Robeson won a four-year academic scholarship to Rutgers University.

Now a man of independent wealth he returns to his native Africa where his people are enslaved under a similar yoke, that of the omnipotent force of the witch doctors. His is a mission to liberate them from the stranglehold of their oppressors enabling them to enjoy equality and liberty...the rights of all men.

Cde Ranjeet, of the CPGB-ML, addresses this meeting of the Stalin Society, "Joseph Stalin, architect of socialism", which marked the 60th anniversary of Joseph Stalin's death. Ranjeet's presentation concentrates on the internationalism of the Soviet Union, and specifically, Stalin's role in the solution of the National Problem, whereby the contradictions between formerly oppressed and oppressing nations were solved, enabling them to live in harmony, by concentrating on the essential commonality of interests of the vast masses of their populations, as being workers first and foremost. Musicians (Tracks 1 & 2): Jeff "Tain" Watts (Drums), Reginald Veal (Bass), Ed Kelly (Piano) Tracks 3 & 4: La...

joy beats oppresion,
but oppression will make you pay,
cause our joy is fleeting while oppression never goes away.. you look them right in the eye,
yea you shout and sing them down,
but joy, our joy, don't really care for fighting
while oppression will just wait around for you to blink.
joy beats oppresion,
but oppression will make you pay.
speak up , black out, black listed, full blooded, red-
he gave us all he could
but when he got tired
and we all get tired
when we ain't thinking so good
when he got tired this country
it took everything damn back
had freed that it god damn could.
bullies will always take back everything they can,
from the joyous, from the free
lucky drunks who don't give a damn
this country will always take back everything it can.
speak up, black out, black listed, full blooded, red
speak up, black out, black listed, full blooded, red
he wasn't in it for hisself
he was in it for you and for me
but he fought it alone
and that just makes you bitter and mean
For a while this could be so good
For tonight we make the rules here inside this club
Me and the girls are here to tell you
they're fucking with you 'cause they want what you have
and that things are really pretty damn funny
and that things aren't really quite so bad
take this one thing with you to work and to school
and to home to mom and to dad
there are moments when you can stop the world
remember that friends don' t be sad
take this one thing with you to work and to school
and to home to mom and to dad
don't hang a man out to dry again,
don't make a man fight it alone again.
