9,594 Coffee & Side Tables

Despite being used largely for holding table lamps, decorative accessories, books and the occasional beverage, our coffee tables and side tables often end up playing several different roles. In the middle of a busy week, they can quickly become a desk, dining table or, when organisation is at its most wanting, some extra stacking space. Although they can be last-minute additions, side, console, and coffee tables can be used to bring function and style to your living or family room. Here are some ideas to guide your coffee table selection. More

How many coffee tables and console tables should I buy?

Depending on the space you have, you may be able to have one coffee table and two side tables; alternatively, one coffee table might suffice, with a folding tray table as a space-efficient side table alternative. Ottomans with tray tops can make great coffee tables, because they provide a flat surface and extra storage, while a long, slim console table against the back of a sofa or along a wall will take up minimal floor space. For a versatile range of sizes that coordinate, nesting tables are great idea and can be tucked neatly away when not in use.

What coffee table material should I choose?

From dark woods to glass, coffee tables, console tables and side tables are made in materials and styles to complement any type of decor. A side table made of reclaimed wood and iron can provide an industrial accent in a contemporary home, while plastic or perspex can be used for an even more modern appeal. Glass coffee tables can look either sleek or elegant based on the design, just as wood can look polished for a glam finish or distressed for a shabby chic look.

How tall should a coffee table be?

A coffee table has to be just the right height so as to not block the view of the TV or other areas of the room and not too low as to make you crouch down uncomfortably to use it. And as most of us use the coffee table as a foot rest, it needs to be the right height to make it comfortable for leg stretching, too. Take a look at the measurements of the coffee tables you look at online and measure how tall they will be in your living room. The ideal height is generally about 40-45cm and you don't want the coffee table to be much lower than 5cm below your sofa height.
