Rocket launch at Plesetsk Cosmodrome – In the Army Now Ep.6
Back in the hangar, Anna and Pavel observe their rocket being assembled. They learn some space industry jargon as well as the meaning behind the Russian Space Forces’ insignia. For the “bloom of the iron flower”, they visit the launch control centre. Anna becomes the first woman to hold one of the keys that launches a rocket.
It turns out that a successful rocket launch in Plesetsk requires a combination of science, religion and superstition. Not long after Anna finds out that a female name is written on all rockets as a lucky charm, a Russian Orthodox priest arrives. He recruits Pavel as a sexton and proceeds to bless the rocket, the mission, and everyone involved.

In 1957 Plesetsk was chosen as site of first operational Soviet ICBM base. Its location in a remote site in the Northern Russian forest was necessary because it was then one of the few parts of the Soviet Union where the world's first ICBM, the R-7, could be based to hit targets in the United States.

Joining firefighters at Russia’s Plesetsk Cosmodrome – In the Army Now Ep.5
Opened in 1957, Russia's Plesetsk Cosmodrome has been in operation for 60 years. Unlike Baikanur in Kazakhstan, the Plesetsk site is on Russian territory. Its use has increased since the end of the Soviet Union despite still only launching unmanned rockets.
The neighbouring town of Mirny is a high security area requiring a permit to gain entry. Anna and Pavel are fortunate enough to be granted permission. They are even allowed to visit the rocket assembly hangar – but not before they learn the health and safety rules! While Pavel studiously reads a memo, Anna takes a more hands-on approach and joins the spaceport fire brigade. She takes part in a drill, learning to change into a firefighter’s uniform in just 20 seconds and extinguish fires using a hose and a water cannon.

Russia's Space Forces carried out a successful second test launch of the Angara A5 heavy-lift space launch vehicle at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Mirny on Monday.
The eco-rocket, which uses kerosene and oxygen as fuel, is the first to be domestically produced since the fall of the Soviet Union.
Director-General of Russia's space agency Roscosmos Dmitri Rogozin celebrated the launch by tweeting "It flies, damn it!".
The Angara is being developed to replace the Soyuz and Proton rockets as future mainstays of Russia's space exploration programme. Its first test launch was conducted in 2014.

Fun fact: the spaceport was built in the city of Mirny because its skies are almost always overcast, making it very difficult to spy on the location by satellite. Today, however, Pavel and Anna get lucky: the skies clear for the launch of their rocket, and they are able to admire it in its full glory.

When they are primed and ready, Anna and Pavel enter the hangar to help prepare the rocket for launch. Here, they find out what's special about the hangar floor as well as the purpose of the rocket they are working on.
