List of lakes by area

This is a list of terrestrial lakes with a surface area of more than 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi), ranked by area. This list does not include reservoirs and lagoons.

The area of some lakes can vary considerably over time, either seasonally or from year to year. This is especially true of salt lakes in arid climates.

National park

A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.

While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.

Lake

A lake is an area of variable size filled with water, localized in a basin, that is surrounded by land, apart from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean (except for sea lochs in Scotland and Ireland), and therefore are distinct from lagoons, and are also larger and deeper than ponds, though there are no official or scientific definitions. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which are usually flowing. However most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams.

Natural lakes are generally found in mountainous areas, rift zones, and areas with ongoing glaciation. Other lakes are found in endorheic basins or along the courses of mature rivers. In some parts of the world there are many lakes because of chaotic drainage patterns left over from the last Ice Age. All lakes are temporary over geologic time scales, as they will slowly fill in with sediments or spill out of the basin containing them.

Many lakes are artificial and are constructed for industrial or agricultural use, for hydro-electric power generation or domestic water supply, or for aesthetic or recreational purposes.

Area

Area is the quantity that expresses the extent of a two-dimensional figure or shape, or planar lamina, in the plane. Surface area is its analog on the two-dimensional surface of a three-dimensional object. Area can be understood as the amount of material with a given thickness that would be necessary to fashion a model of the shape, or the amount of paint necessary to cover the surface with a single coat. It is the two-dimensional analog of the length of a curve (a one-dimensional concept) or the volume of a solid (a three-dimensional concept).

The area of a shape can be measured by comparing the shape to squares of a fixed size. In the International System of Units (SI), the standard unit of area is the square metre (written as m²), which is the area of a square whose sides are one metre long. A shape with an area of three square metres would have the same area as three such squares. In mathematics, the unit square is defined to have area one, and the area of any other shape or surface is a dimensionless real number.

In Turkmenistan is the burning, stinking, sulphurous crater known as the Gate to Hell. In 1971 Soviet engineers were drilling the area known to hold one of the largest deposits of natural gas. Number 9. The Well Of Chand Baori . Legend has it that this 13 story water well was carved out of the rock by spirits in a single night, and dedicated to the Hindu goddess of happiness. There are 3500 perfectly symmetrical steps leading to the bottom, which is about 10 degrees cooler than at the surface. Number 8. The KTB Superdeep Borehole. Starting in 1982, the German Ministry of Research began a scientific exploration drilling program, deep into the earth's crust, that would last more than 12 years and cost more than a third of a billion dollars, their most expensive geo-science project ever. Number 7. The Guatamala City Sinkhole. In 2010, a massive hole suddenly opened up in the middle of the city and swallowed a three story factory house, along with fifteen people inside. The cause was attributed to Tropical Storm Agatha, which impacted Guatamala just three days after the eruption of Volcano Pacaya. Number 6. Siberian Craters. Yet another new geological phenomenon was discovered in 2014 when a reindeer herder discovered a two hundred foot crater in a remote area known as The End Of The World. Number 5. Indiana Dunes National Park. An amazing new geological phenomenon was only discovered in the last few years, when shifting sands have suddenly opened up massive sinkholes beneath travelers' feet. Number 4. Monticello Dam Hole - This Majestic spillhole, also known as the "glory hole" is part of the Monticello Dam in Napa County, California. This hole is the largest spillhole in the world and leads down a 304 foot or 93 m tall hole which drains out out of the bottom of the dam. Number 3. Devil's Sinkhole. This Texan National Natural Landmark is an enormous vertical cavern 50 feet wide and 350 feet deep. Historically it's been used as a place of shelter by early American settlers and countless generations of Native Americans. Number 2. Derinkuyu. In central Turkey, a man was renovating his traditional home when he discovered a hidden room with a covered hole in the wall. This causes a myriad of health problems for the people of China who live near the river. Almost no one actually goes into it. The people who live in the villages near the rivers of China are 35% more likely to get diseases such as cancer compared to the national average and people die much younger when they live near these infected waters. Conservation efforts to revitalize these rivers is an ongoing thing, but it will take some time before these rivers will ever be back to their former glory. The World’s Southern Ocean 4. The Southern Ocean of the World or the Antarctic Ocean is one of the harshest environments on our planet above and below the water. The Southern Ocean touches Antarctica on one side and three other oceans on the other. The amount of acidic material in the brine pool causes animals and people alike to get effectively burned to death by the solvent-rich water. The crab that you see in the image has basically been pickled and boiled to death, according to scientists, and it was all because he was unlucky enough to fall into what some people are now calling “The Jacuzzi of Death.” This zone is fascinating to scientists, but overall it should be avoided by any reasonable person. The Bermuda Triangle 1. The Bermuda Triangle is essentially the most dangerous zone in the entire ocean. The catch is that none knows for sure why this is. There have been multiple theories attempting to relate why almost anyone who enters this triangle of water disappears. The driving theory is the presence of gas pockets under the water that rises to the surface and explodes causing ships to sink. If they do not hit a ship, they can rise into the air and potentially knock out the electronics in an aircraft. The old Dniepr Memory (Translation of the Ukrainian text of the film into English) It is always very interesting to know something about history of the native country, about what was happening here on the Dniepr bancs in the ancient times. Except scientists (historians, archaeologists, geologists and paleontologists) some other people tray to solve this mystery. They are amateurs – people, who do wish to discover and announce to their compatriots knowledge about ancient history of their native country. The film is a trial of one of such amateurs to reconstruct as far as it is possible the mental pictures of the life which took place on the Dniepropetrovsk region territory during glacial period and earlier. In 1996 together with his friends he made an exhibition named “The Great River Memory” in a room of Dnieproptrovsk State University. This exhibition is base of this film. The text of narrator in the film complicated mechanical systems creation methodology I have a hobby. On our region territory I am collecting fossilized animals bones and traces of ancient people’s activity. The aim of the work is to reconstruct the life history on our territory, because that may be interesting for people of our town and somebody else. To avoid great mistakes while definition of the found things I took lessons and field practice in the Historian Museum archaeological department and its expeditions. Many times I took part in the work of archaeological expeditions under supervision of professor Dmitriy Telegin too. I want to narrate you about these search results. The search lasted for 16 years and the collected material we put in the base of the exhibition named “The Great River Memory”. I will start from the town history. The town Dniepropetrovsk (in the past Ekaterinoslav) had been established 200 ears ago on the place where the river Samara falls into the Dniepr. Here the Dniepr turns on the south and brings its water to the Black Sea. In all the times here near the fall of Samara there was wade, which was always used by people. People of the stone age, People of the Bronze Age, Indo-European people, that were going on the Nord and on the West and incalculable other people of the Iron Age - all of them crossed the Dniepr in this place. So this place for very long time was of strategic importance. And may by even sow 17-th century Pole government decided to build there a stronghold, which was destroyed later by Zaporozhsky Cossacks. The ruins of that fortress walls one may see on the right high side of the river. This is the only historical object belonging to the Middle Ages in our region. Other historical objects older than 200 years are absent in our region. Near the left side of Dniepr aside of the wade was standing an island. That was a very comfortable place to stay for a wile and representatives of the nations passing this place camped on that island if they stayed here longer than one day. The cultural layers of Igren keep memory about them. This is way I believe and may by more others are inclined to believe that the cultural layers of the Igren are very important memorials in Europe. A big quantity of dwelling-places people of Stone Age and Bronze Age were discovered by many investigators and archeological expeditions in nadporozhie (that is between Dniepropetrovsk and Zaporozhie). They were searched and described, but higher of Dniepropetrovsk the river sides were not searched and were flooded when the Zaporozhskaya hydroelectric power station building was finished. So all the archaeological memorials which were on the river sides were flooded too. Later they were partially ruined and they are being destroyed now, because the building organizations continue to take river sends of the ancient riversides in large quantities. In 1980 year, when my children become big enough and when they become very interested in history, I decided to undertake methodical search of the river sands with the purpose to collect reminders of the ancient people and their kits, which they lost or ejected on the riverside. That was as interesting as useful. At that time in different places of the riverside one could see a large hills of the sand. Towboats were brining great barges with sand to the places of their unloading. Building firms used the sand to fill up the lowlands and build on them the residential districts. The river sand was taken out by large floating machines on a significant depth (till 20 meters). That was a great possibility. To look into the depth of millenniums was a very simple thing: for that it was necessary only to get up on a river sand hill and to be able to recognize on it everything what abandoned from the ancient people activity. In due course we learned that. It was only to wait till a hard wind will blow off that hill and blow the light sand from its surface away. After that on the hill surface the heavy fraction remains. National Park «Sviati Gory» ("Holy Mountains") National Park «Sviati Gory» was established by the decree of the President of Ukraine № 135/97 from the 13th of February, 1997. All the organizational works were carried on by the Head of State Department of Ecology and Natural Resources in the Donetsk region S.Kurulenko. The project of establishment was prepared by the Laboratory of Nature Conservation Problems of Donetsk University under the direction of Deputy Head of the same Department Gennadiy Molodan. He did much to study wildlife and promote nature conservation in the Donetsk region. Being a high-ranking official, Gennadiy Molodan understood the value of the natural complexes which managed to survive, he sincerely felt and understood the responsibility for keeping them for descendants. He was an advanced person in matters of ecology and actually he was the one who brought the aspirations of scientists into a formalized idea of a national park. Gennadiy Molodan’s efforts were not in vain, and the process of creating the park was transferred to the practical level. General public, scientists and administrative structures were involved in the process of establishment of the National Park Sviati Gory. The Mayor of Slavyanogirsk A.Karlov and the Head of the Main Department of Reserves and National Parks of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Nuclear Safety of Ukraine N.Stetsenko also made a significant contribution to the creation of the National Park. National Park "Sviati Gory" is subordinated to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine. The territory of the park is located in the north of Donetsk region, in Slavyansk, Krasnolimansk and Artemovsk districts. It includes the resort city of Svyatogorsk. National Park "Sviati Gory" is the first national park which has been created in the left-bank Ukraine. National Park consists of some forestlands which are divided by settlements, agricultural lands, railways and highways, power lines. The total length of the boundaries of the park is more than 500 km. 35 localities are situated in the vicinity of the territory of the National Park and it is visited by at least two million people throughout the year.. The territory of the park is of 40605.5 hectares, 11894.5 of them were given to the National Park for permanent use, and other 28711 hectares are in the use of the Slavyansk and Krasnolimansk forestries and city Svyatogorsk. About 90% of the territory of the park is covered with forests, a significant area is occupied by the floodplain of the Severskiy Donets river with water meadows, lakes, marshes and former river-beds. Currently, 57 species of mammals live here, over 200 species of birds nest here or stay during migrations. 17 species of amphibians and reptiles, 30 fish species have been found here in their typical habitats. Within the territory of National Park and in its closest vicinity there are about 1200 species of vascular plants and at least 1000 species of mushrooms. The flora and fauna of National Park "Sviati Gory" includes 119 plant and animal species, which that are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, 31 species is included into the European Red List. Unique natural heritage of the area of Svyatogorsk has not only national but also international significance. In 2000 National Park was one of the nominees from Ukraine for the status of a World Heritage Site of UNESCO. In 2003, National Park "Sviati Gory" was accepted to the EUROPARC Federation of protected areas of Europe. Then membership in this organization was stopped due to inability to pay fees. The priorities of the National Park are: - protection and restoration of natural, historical and cultural complexes; - creation of conditions for organized recreation and eco-tourism; - environmental research in terms of recreational use; - organization of environmental education and training, establishing ecological culture of local residents and tourists, involving them into preservation of natural and cultural heritage of this pearl of Donbass. The history of the park is virtually identical to the dramatic story of the young Ukrainian state. Just before the creation of the park state forestry enterprises have cut down about 40% of native pine forests in the future territory of the park, during the regime of Yanukovych park painfully suffered from poaching orgy and uncontrolled logging.
