Barbara Freethy has been writing for about 20 years, and started out in traditional publishing and then in 2010, she started indie publishing her own books, both backlist and now a new series, the Calloways. Her very first indie book, Summer Secrets, hit #1 on the NY Times list. This year she crossed the 4 million books sold mark and 15 of her books have hit the NY Times list since going indie.
On transitioning from being an author to CEO of a publishing empire.
Barbara started out doing everything herself but now her daughter helps run with the business. You need to put together a team of people to help you, and can do the things you don't want to do. Barbara does a lot of her own covers, but she has handed off a lot of other things. You must have editors and proof-readers. Put on your business hat and think like a publisher. 80% of your day is a writer and then 20% of your day, you are a publisher.
A lot of this is trial and error, but you do need to learn the business side and be interested in it. Look at blurbs and what other successful authors are doing. If you don't enjoy the business end of things, you will need to hire more people. If you like to run your own business, you'll have fun!
Tips on branding.
This is critical, and you might have to ask other people what your brand is. It's hard to be objective. Think about the consistency of covers through font, artwork and titles. People need to recognize "that's a Barbara Freethy book." On writing in other genres, it's great for artistic creativity, but you will make more money faster if you stick to one genre at the start and build an audience. It takes several books to build an audience, so stick with the same kind of story for at least 4-5 books. You will make more money if you stay in one genre.
On series and family sagas.
The series is part of our culture now, spreading across movies and TV and books. People like to binge watch whole seasons, and binge read to get deeper with characters. The series is part of a brand, and people want more in that world. If you fall in love with a world, you want a million stories in it. Barbara has book 6 in the Calloway series coming soon, and readers are excited about it!
Connecting with readers.
Barbara uses Facebook and Twitter, as well as her website, email and a newsletter. You have to participate in social media, even if you hate it. Readers have to have a place where they connect
Tipping point
Barbara has 37 books and we talk about the tipping point. Once you've written one book, you're an author. Once you've written 3 or 4, you're on your way to a career. The tipping point is different for everyone, and lots of great books that take time to find an audience.
It's not a business if you are afraid of risk, as nothing is guaranteed. You are criticized at every point in the game. The skies the limit, but there are also a lot of potential downfalls.
What's next in the indie world?
The global market is the next step. The US is off and rolling but the rest of the world is just getting started. Top indies are setting up relationships with vendors in other countries and looking at translations and rights deals. Audiobooks will also continue to gain in popularity.

Barbara Anderson (writer)
Barbara Anderson, Lady Anderson (14 April 1926 – 24 March 2013) was a New Zealand fiction writer who became internationally recognized despite only starting her writing career in her late fifties. The bulk of her writing can be seen as being somewhat similar in style that of Anita Brookner, Raymond Carver, Margaret Drabble and Bernice Rubens.
Career
Born Barbara Lillian Romaine in Hastings, New Zealand, she was educated at the University of Otago where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1947. After a career as a medical technologist and as a teacher, she went back to college in Wellington, New Zealand, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Victoria University of Wellington in 1984.
In 1951, she married Vice-Admiral Sir Neil Dudley Anderson, later to become Chief of New Zealand Defence Staff. They had two sons. Lady Anderson died in Auckland on 24 March 2013, at the age of 86.

Journalist, producer and author, Barbara Jill Walters, came into the world on September 25, 1929. Her father, Louis Walters, worked as the owner of the Latin Quarter nightclubs and as a booking agent, which allowed Barbara to associate with celebrities from a young age. She later claimed that this was how she became comfortable talking with famous individuals as a journalist. Her mother, Dena Walters, was a homemaker who raised Barbara along with her two siblings: Jacqueline and Burton. Jacqueline was born mentally disabled and died in 1985 from ovarian cancer. Burton passed away in 1932 from pneumonia. She attended college at Sarah Lawrence in Bronxville, New York, graduating in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in English. Walters has been married and divorced three times. She has one child, a daughter named Jackie, whom she adopted during her second marriage. After college, Barbara worked with an NBC affiliate in public relations. She soon became a writer and producer before moving on to a writing job at CBS for the network's "Morning Show." In 1961 she moved back to NBC to work as a writer for "The Today Show," where she gradually moved to more prominent on-air roles as a "Today Girl." In 1974 she became the first female co-host of "The Today Show," where she remained for two years. She shocked audiences by moving to ABC in 1976 to co-host the "ABC Evening News," earning a salary of $1 million dollars a year and becoming the highest paid journalist at the time. The show released her two years later, and in 1979 she became a correspondent for the CBS evening news program, "20/20." While there, she refined her interviewing techniques, often called "personality interviews," which made her famous. Barbara Freethy has been writing for about 20 years, and started out in traditional publishing and then in 2010, she started indie publishing her own books, both backlist and now a new series, the Calloways. Her very first indie book, Summer Secrets, hit #1 on the NY Times list. This year she crossed the 4 million books sold mark and 15 of her books have hit the NY Times list since going indie.
On transitioning from being an author to CEO of a publishing empire.
Barbara started out doing everything herself but now her daughter helps run with the business. You need to put together a team of people to help you, and can do the things you don't want to do. Barbara does a lot of her own covers, but she has handed off a lot of other things. You must have editors and proof-readers. Put on your business hat and think like a publisher. 80% of your day is a writer and then 20% of your day, you are a publisher.
A lot of this is trial and error, but you do need to learn the business side and be interested in it. Look at blurbs and what other successful authors are doing. If you don't enjoy the business end of things, you will need to hire more people. If you like to run your own business, you'll have fun!
Tips on branding.
This is critical, and you might have to ask other people what your brand is. It's hard to be objective. Think about the consistency of covers through font, artwork and titles. People need to recognize "that's a Barbara Freethy book." On writing in other genres, it's great for artistic creativity, but you will make more money faster if you stick to one genre at the start and build an audience. It takes several books to build an audience, so stick with the same kind of story for at least 4-5 books. You will make more money if you stay in one genre.
On series and family sagas.
The series is part of our culture now, spreading across movies and TV and books. People like to binge watch whole seasons, and binge read to get deeper with characters. The series is part of a brand, and people want more in that world. If you fall in love with a world, you want a million stories in it. Barbara has book 6 in the Calloway series coming soon, and readers are excited about it!
Connecting with readers.
Barbara uses Facebook and Twitter, as well as her website, email and a newsletter. You have to participate in social media, even if you hate it. Readers have to have a place where they connect
Tipping point
Barbara has 37 books and we talk about the tipping point. Once you've written one book, you're an author. Once you've written 3 or 4, you're on your way to a career. The tipping point is different for everyone, and lots of great books that take time to find an audience.
It's not a business if you are afraid of risk, as nothing is guaranteed. You are criticized at every point in the game. The skies the limit, but there are also a lot of potential downfalls.
What's next in the indie world?
The global market is the next step. The US is off and rolling but the rest of the world is just getting started. Top indies are setting up relationships with vendors in other countries and looking at translations and rights deals. Audiobooks will also continue to gain in popularity.

Her father, Louis Walters, worked as the owner of the Latin Quarter nightclubs and as a booking agent, which allowed Barbara to associate with celebrities from a young age. Her mother, Dena Walters, was a homemaker who raised Barbara along with her two siblings: Jacqueline and Burton. Jacqueline was born mentally disabled and died in 1985 from ovarian cancer.
