Cold snap to hit WA overnight

Parts of Western Australia are expected to shiver through their coldest morning of the year on Friday, with some areas tipped to drop below freezing.

The mercury is expected to plunge to four degrees in Perth, while parts of the state's south, like Southern Cross west of Coolgardie, are expected to drop below zero.

It comes after Salmon Gums, north of Esperance, plummeted to a chilly -3.3 degrees overnight - marking its coldest June day in 11 years.

"We haven't reached seven degrees in the early morning since Sunday - the maximum has been 6.3 degrees," Weatherzone senior meteorologist Jacob Cronje said.

"Parts of WA will have their coldest morning for the year [Friday] in the south west and interior... for instance in the central Wheatbelt we'll see some places having their coldest morning.

"From about 5am to 6am, in Perth we're going to have showers and the odd thunderstorm... and it will be gusty by the coast.
