Product Description

Described by publishers as raw, explosive and frightening, Race Traitor is inspired by the incredible true story of a Jewish teenage girl who becomes recruited by a neo-Nazi terrorist group.

To sixteen-year old runaway Lara Aslan, the new friends she finds in the secretive Patriot Front are the family she’s never had. They feed her when she’s hungry, watch her back and provide her with shelter at the home of infamous Holocaust denier Heinz Zimmer, whose web of hate connects neo-Nazis worldwide.

Under the guidance of the mysterious Markus Bellow, the covert leader of the Patriot Front, Lara swiftly undergoes a radical transformation that integrates weapon-training, combat skills and information-gathering tactics to produce the perfect terrorist. Thinking it’s all a game, Lara doesn’t know that the Patriot Front will stop at nothing to achieve their clandestine aim. In turn, the Patriot Front is unaware of Lara’s own dark, long-buried secrets, which come to light on the heels of a brutal attack.

Forced to confront her Jewish roots and concealed sexual identity, Lara knows she has to take swift action before it’s too late. With the help of a middle-aged French journalist and a lesbian police officer, Lara begins to spy on Heinz Zimmer and the Patriot Front. But the deeper she delves into their network of hatred, the deadlier her quest becomes.

INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY
A gripping, fast-paced storyline inspired by actual events, Race Traitor blends the thrilling joyride of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with the revolutionary manifesto of V for Vendetta. An unforgettable journey into the darkness of the human heart, this is a tale that is sure to stay with you long after the book has ended.

PRAISE FOR RACE TRAITOR

“The author conjures up a powerful premise, and frighteningly captures the world of separatist groups.”
Ballantine USA

This is really a fascinating plot, and I was so drawn into Larissa’s complex, high-stakes world with the sinister Patriot Front. The author did a fantastic job of creating a gritty, believable setting and convincing me of Larissa’s motivations to get wrapped up into such frightening circumstances.

“The edginess of this novel appeals to me, as does the complicated teen heroine drawn in Larissa.”

About the Author

At age 16, Elisa Hategan was an alienated runaway who became recruited into Canada’s most powerful white supremacist movement, the Heritage Front. She was groomed by top leaders to become a rising star of the extremist far-right movement. An errand girl for notorious Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel, she was a witness to the illicit activities of an undercover CSIS agent and co-founder of the Heritage Front. At age 18, she turned against the group and spied on them for several months before testifying in court and going into hiding. Borrowing from her own experiences, the author now weaves an incredible story of one teenage girl’s courage and transformation against a backdrop of hatred and brutality.

Descent into Hell... and Back September 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Race Traitor is an intriguing book. It's not "light reading" and it's not always enjoyable. It's gritty, intense, and sometimes disturbing. It's the story of a teenage girl (based on true events) who descends into hell when she is seduced by a white supremacist group. It tells how she was recruited, became a leader in that movement, and eventually had to face the reality of the group's perverse hatred. Against incredible odds, she then finds a way to escape and learns to survive. I found her perseverance inspiring. While I didn't enjoy reading every part of the book, I can honestly say I'm glad I read it. The book doesn't feel like fiction. It feels very real. And it's guaranteed to make you think.

Ever wonder what you would do if you lost your identity tomorrow? If you woke up and realized you couldn't trust a soul in the world? And those that were suppose to love you simply abused and used you? Elisa Hategan did not write a love story. She did not write a heart warming tale that lifts your spirits with a fairytale ending. What she did write is a tale of resilience and survival, of heartache and redemption. What she wrotes reminds us that the seeds of hate are alive and well in the hearts of bigots and racists, and that corruption does not necessarily grow in dark, sunless places.

Race Traitor is the story of a teenage girl, Larissa (Lara), who seeks acceptance in the world and falls prey to the trapping of a Neo-nazi organization in the guise of purpose and adoration. Skinhead violance, political extremism, home-grown terrorism and a growing self-awareness of her own character eventually lead Larissa to a deeper understanding of how violence perpetuates violence, and she must make a decision that will change her life in ways that most of us can never understand. Her courage is driven by a complex, and underlying desire to redeem herself for her perceived lack of courage in the death of her homeland friend, Anella, who's tragic and brutal demise is the opening for this book. In the end, her courage and conviction uncover far more than she expected.

Race Traitor is a long book at 432 pages, but this fact never crossed my mind because Hategan's writing is tight and fast-paced, propelling the reader at such a speed that we literally hold on to our seats chapter after chapter.

This is a must read for anyone.

Race Traitor is a disturbing journey into the underbelly of a little-known world. Using the story of a teenager who falls prey to the recruiting tactics of a neo-Nazi organization, the author deconstructs the underground scene of political extremists and home-grown terrorists. This unsettling saga takes us from the world of wealthy German expatriates and Nazi supporters to the hillbilly Klansmen and brutally vicious skinhead gangs.

The shocking theme of corruption in this story brings to mind The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. However, the line of comparison between Race Traitor and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo rests with the authors. Both Larsson and Hategan have a history of clashes with the neo-Nazi movement, and both have written storylines that borrow heavily upon their own experiences. In Race Traitor, Hategan does for Canada what Larsson did for Sweden - she exposes our dirty little secrets, albeit the setting is now Chicago, and points to a country that has allowed notorious Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel to live in open view and print his publications for more than twenty years.

Unlike Larsson's heroine, Lara doesn't sport any tattoos. She's a typical teenager - angry, brash, full of street smarts, and entirely convinced she can take care of herself. Until she falls into the clutches of a movement that refuses to let her go, and devours her identity and spirit from within.

The story is troubling on multiple levels, especially when you realize that youth like these are recruited everyday by manipulative individuals who use ideology and comradeship to twist young minds. At times I wanted to shake some sense into this character. But as her character unfolds, you begin to sense that there is more to this than meets the eye. And when Lara does turn against her "family", the result is shocking, profound, and deeply satisfying.

More About the Author

I'm a Romanian-born Canadian writer and poet. My poetry and short fiction has appeared in several literary journals before I made the transition to writing prose. I graduated from the University of Ottawa with a double major in psychology and criminology, which has helped in sketching up some of my more disturbed characters.

Race Traitor is my first novel. The reception it has received so far has been nothing short of amazing, and I'm still bowled over by the fact that it won over the juries of several art councils that have funded my manuscript. It's earned a Toronto Arts Council, an Ontario Arts council, and a Canada Arts Council work-in-progress award, and I am quite thankful for the encouragement of all those who read through my early drafts and believed it was a story that needed to be told.

Other than being a writer, I'm an ex-English teacher. I taught ESL in Seoul, South Korea for 14 months and it was a challenging, yet incredible experience. These days I provide ghost writing and editorial services on the side, so feel free to hit me up if you have a job you'd like me to tackle.

I really appreciate your visit to my page and hope to hear from you. Please feel free to drop me a line and tell me what you thought of my book. I really do look forward to interacting with my readers.
