A far greater proportion of resources needs to be targeted towards pre-primary education. This means a new approach to funding is needed to tackle the problem. It is time for governments and the international community to back up their words with actions. If they believe early child care and education is important - they must prove it. Prioritise it in education policies and allocate sufficient resources to get EVERY child in EVERY country into free, quality pre-primary education.
As Brexit negotiations begin, then, many in Westminster and Brussels face an unexpected crash course in the unique concerns, tensions and peculiarities of Belfast politics. The new Northern Irish centre of gravity in British politics is yet another dimension that must be considered if these intricate, challenging talks are to be made a success.
The Government has created a workforce crisis in the NHS which is causing financial chaos for hospitals and causing misery for patients. We are 10,000 GPs, 3,500 midwives and now 40,000 nurses short of the number we need. Nurses are being forced to use foodbanks to make ends meet and NHS Providers say that staff are quitting the NHS to stack shelves instead. The Health Secretary says he has sympathy for underpaid health staff but sympathy won't put food on the table.
Despite a stint as Elsa from Frozen at Christmas, I've always been known as Mary Poppins. I wear the outfit - it seemed only right that I dress up as her and I know all her songs after all. I mimic her accent and her quips. "Now, now we are not a cod fish," is my favourite. Mary is a great leveller for a group of rowdy Daddies at a Christmas party I can tell you! When I pick my daughter up from school she has got quite used to other children pointing at me and saying "Look! There's Mary Poppins!", as has my poor husband.
As Stonewall once again release statistics that make chilling reading for the state of the world for young trans people, I'm once again reminded that we only tangentially live in the same world. Tell me how much time we should wait for things to get better. Tell me that this is exactly how it goes. Tell me it's unfortunate, it's really sad, but you don't really feel comfortable with this kind of chat.
In this vlog for HuffPost UK, Prabu talks about how we define what it is to be a man, and how toxic masculinity leads to abuse of women across the world. He also discusses his work with men countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo on educating both men and women on gender justice, and working to eradicate aspects of culture that are used to promote and justify the abuse of women.
Torture is not something I sought, nor is it one I can forget. My enduring legacy, and that of other survivors who also speak out, is to pass on our knowledge of the impact of torture, why it is always wrong, and how we can work together to stop it forever.
The idea of exoskeletons seems inextricably linked to the fictional world, but in recent years, engineers and inventors have also begun to use exoskeletons not just to take off, but to keep people in the military safe, to aid muscle therapy, and even help people to walk again.
The state has written off the chances of black men achieving life success to the best of their potential and the unfairness is deafening; the government has set up a Social Mobility Commission to address the lack of transition in schools, jobs and society for people from poor backgrounds, but has done little to nothing for black boys, even though a quarter of black people are from deprived backgrounds.
Kondo tells us that you should only keep clothing that "brings you joy". I agree you should choose clothes that make you happy and feel confident, but what about the practical? If I pull out a skirt I want a black top to wear with it - now I may want a tight one, a long sleeve one, a vest top, a polo neck - you get the picture.
While wedding trends constantly evolve, the wedding industry isn't one that is particularly quick at changing itself. How often do you spend your summer weekends at weddings and by early September you feel like you've seen the same thing four or five times? Even as we become more liberal as a society there are certain traditions and customs we just don't seem to want to break.
We all now leave school knowing the basics of how to look after ourselves physically - healthy vs unhealthy food, the importance of exercise - but with very little knowledge of how to cope with the personal crises so many of us face at some stage. Relationship breakdown, bereavement and disappointment at work are effectively part of life - so why don't we all learn the basics of how to cope with them? In the process of learning about how people experience mental distress, the course then teaches you to spot signs in others around you who might be experiencing difficulty. Statistically you are more likely to meet someone about to attempt suicide than about to have a heart attack - so everyone should know what to do.
The canvas of post-Brexit Britain still looks startlingly bare a year on. On Monday, the picture became a little bit clearer - and so far it's not pretty. This is a time of change, which means it's a chance for national soul-searching about the type of country we want to be and the future we want to build.
The UK voted for Brexit. It is going to happen, whether it be soft, hard, clean, open, red, white, or blue: the UK is leaving the EU. And therefore, the UK needs a new immigration system. Quite rightly, the rights of those currently living in the UK - and those UK citizens living abroad - have taken priority. Should this have been done sooner? Yes. But it is being tackled now, and it is, for the most part, a fair deal.
We now have a shortage of GPs which means that while I am treating the person in front of me there are not enough colleagues to start seeing the steady tide of other people filling up the waiting room in my surgery. Services that I want to refer a patient to, like hospitals, mental health services or community nursing colleagues, are overstretched and oversubscribed, meaning that the patient may not get the level of care they deserve.
While Theresa May limps on, her deal throws up an immediate question: will all parts of the UK also receive similar vital additional funding, as Northern Ireland is getting as part of the deal? For me, this is crucial. This massive cash deal with the DUP proves that austerity is a political choice made by the Tories, and when push comes to shove, money can be found. So it is vital that Scotland, Wales and the regions of England also get extra funding to end austerity.
In total, almost 900,000 South Sudanese refugees are now living in Uganda. Half a million are children. It is, the fastest growing refugee crisis in the world. Uganda is far from a wealthy country, yet they have opened up their borders to a massive influx of people fleeing conflict.
It is no longer possible to successfully argue that you can't make these ideas popular. The public understand they are not only possible, they are inevitable. The only question now is, how long will it take the government to catch up?
Ignoring the youth vote was fatal. If the prime minister's circle and CCHQ had listened to the advice of the active party supporters, we would not be having to apologise today to colleagues who have lost their seats, and we would have the support of the generation who will have to build the country post-Brexit.
Labour are close, so close. Victory is in sight. But a demoralising defeat is still possible. No one expected Corbyn to win before. Now no-one expects him to lose.
The backlash against curated Insta-perfection has been a hot topic for quite some time now. It would seem that authenticity is the new currency among influencers. But when people start being 'real' because they feel they have to, is it really real? Or is it just doing more damage?
After the past few months - or has it only been weeks - I'm looking forward to a boring summer. We've been on an emotional roller coaster: crazy, delusional people killed innocents and awful accidents destroyed lives, families, and homes; but on each occasion the British people rallied together to show each other how much they really do care.
