If you are involved in any way with copyright issues, you will be fascinated by this carefully researched, readable and illuminating book. It is interesting to be reminded of the profound and wide ranging influence exerted by what has been termed 'the Imperial Copyright Act' of 1911 forged and implemented when the British Empire was virtually at its height. This, as indicated by the introduction, is 'Albion's legacy.'
Yes, British imperial law has been largely eradicated within nations previously within the empire and now independent, yet the 'legacy' still manifests itself in any number of ways, within national laws, as well as various international conventions and agreements, including the recent TRIPS Agreement of 1994 on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights.
The book, therefore, provides a scholarly overview from at least ten expert contributors from a variety of jurisdictions on the impact and evolution of this pivotal piece of legislation. In addition to their rich array of international qualifications and experience, editors Uma Suthersanen and Ysolde Gendreau are professors of law at, respectively, Queen Mary, University of London and the Universite de Montreal, Canada. The book's other contributors, both academics and practitioners are variously from such jurisdictions as Australia, India, Israel, Jamaica, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa as well as the UK.
'A Shifting Empire' is an appropriate title for this book, as the story of copyright law within the old imperial nations is one of evolution; a continuing movement in the direction of legal systems which ultimately are designed to meet each individual nation's individual needs.
'Despite the fact that all the stories within this volume represent a different legal evolution,' say the editors, 'it is still possible to say that they are all a part of the British copyright legal family.'
An interesting example is cited in Ysolde Gendreau's essay on Canadian copyright law in which she remarks that 'the Imperial Copyright Act actually heralded Canada's copyright emancipation'. Indeed, she raises the possibility that the foundations for copyright sovereignty were laid with the British North America Act of 1867, the constitutional basis for the then new nation. Unsurprisingly the first Canadian Copyright Act was enacted in 1868.
This book is a valuable and certainly topical contribution to the world story of copyright law, which has evolved almost alongside developments in worldwide commerce, creativity and trade. For researchers as well as practitioners and all interested in copyright, the careful footnoting is prodigious and there is a handy index to aids navigation. The publication date is 2013.

UK Fair Use: Fair dealing is an exception to United Kingdom copyright law which allows for the use of copyrighted works without licensing in certain circumstances. It is governed by Sections 29 and 30 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, which provide three types of situation in which fair dealing is a valid defence: where the use is for the purposes of research or private study, where it is to allow for criticism or review, and where it is for the purpose of reporting current events. Created by Steve A. I hear a song and that song evokes an emotion and that emotion in me helped in the creation of this tribute video. While I wish all of the images were high resolution....some images of that day were caught with low quality equipment and the images I chose all seemed to fit with how I was feeling. I witnessed the events of this day like many of us did and it changed me forever. It will always feel fresh in my mind and feel like it happened yesterday. Having experienced such a tragic day....your outlook on so many world events changes. It is amazing how divided the world seems right now but how unified we all were after the events of 9/11....

Copyright Act 1911
The Copyright Act 1911, also known as the Imperial Copyright Act of 1911, is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (UK) which received Royal Assent on 16 December 1911. The act established copyright law in the UK and the British Empire. The act amended existing UK copyright law, as recommended by a Royal Commission in 1878 and repealed all previous copyright legislation that had been in force in the UK. The act also implemented changes arising from the first revision of the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works in 1908.
The act came into force in the UK on 1 July 1912, in the Channel Islands (except Jersey) on 1 July 1912, in Jersey on 8 March 1913, and in the Isle of Man on 5 July 1912. The Copyright Act 1911 applied or extended to all parts of the British Empire. In India the act came into force on 30 October 1912, in Papua on 1 February 1931, and all other British possessions on 1 July 1912. It was subsequently enacted on various dates in the self-governing dominions and "territories under protection" of the British Empire. "The Copyright act 1911 (extension to Palestine), 1924" covered Palestine and later Israel, where in the latter it remained the governing statute until the Israeli 2007 Copyright Act took effect in May 2008.

It is interesting to be reminded of the profound and wide ranging influence exerted by what has been termed 'the Imperial Copyright Act' of 1911 forged and implemented when the British Empire was virtually at its height. This, as indicated by the introduction, is 'Albion's legacy.'
Yes, British imperial law has been largely eradicated within nations previously within the empire and now independent, yet the 'legacy' still manifests itself in any number of ways, within national laws, as well as various international conventions and agreements, including the recent TRIPS Agreement of 1994 on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights.
The book, therefore, provides a scholarly overview from at least ten expert contributors from a variety of jurisdictions on the impact and evolution of this pivotal piece of legislation. In addition to their rich array of international qualifications and experience, editors Uma Suthersanen and Ysolde Gendreau are professors of law at, respectively, Queen Mary, University of London and the Universite de Montreal, Canada. The book's other contributors, both academics and practitioners are variously from such jurisdictions as Australia, India, Israel, Jamaica, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa as well as the UK.
'A Shifting Empire' is an appropriate title for this book, as the story of copyright law within the old imperial nations is one of evolution; a continuing movement in the direction of legal systems which ultimately are designed to meet each individual nation's individual needs.
'Despite the fact that all the stories within this volume represent a different legal evolution,' say the editors, 'it is still possible to say that they are all a part of the British copyright legal family.'
An interesting example is cited in Ysolde Gendreau's essay on Canadian copyright law in which she remarks that 'the Imperial Copyright Act actually heralded Canada's copyright emancipation'. Indeed, she raises the possibility that the foundations for copyright sovereignty were laid with the British North America Act of 1867, the constitutional basis for the then new nation. Unsurprisingly the first Canadian Copyright Act was enacted in 1868.
This book is a valuable and certainly topical contribution to the world story of copyright law, which has evolved almost alongside developments in worldwide commerce, creativity and trade. For researchers as well as practitioners and all interested in copyright, the careful footnoting is prodigious and there is a handy index to aids navigation. The publication date is 2013.

It is interesting to be reminded of the profound and wide ranging influence exerted by what has been termed 'the Imperial Copyright Act' of 1911 forged and implemented when the British Empire was virtually at its height. This, as indicated by the introduction, is 'Albion's legacy.'
Yes, British imperial law has been largely eradicated within nations previously within the empire and now independent, yet the 'legacy' still manifests itself in any number of ways, within national laws, as well as various international conventions and agreements, including the recent TRIPS Agreement of 1994 on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights.
The book, therefore, provides a scholarly overview from at least ten expert contributors from a variety of jurisdictions on the impact and evolution of this pivotal piece of legislation. In addition to their rich array of international qualifications and experience, editors Uma Suthersanen and Ysolde Gendreau are professors of law at, respectively, Queen Mary, University of London and the Universite de Montreal, Canada. The book's other contributors, both academics and practitioners are variously from such jurisdictions as Australia, India, Israel, Jamaica, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa as well as the UK.
'A Shifting Empire' is an appropriate title for this book, as the story of copyright law within the old imperial nations is one of evolution; a continuing movement in the direction of legal systems which ultimately are designed to meet each individual nation's individual needs.
'Despite the fact that all the stories within this volume represent a different legal evolution,' say the editors, 'it is still possible to say that they are all a part of the British copyright legal family.'
An interesting example is cited in Ysolde Gendreau's essay on Canadian copyright law in which she remarks that 'the Imperial Copyright Act actually heralded Canada's copyright emancipation'. Indeed, she raises the possibility that the foundations for copyright sovereignty were laid with the British North America Act of 1867, the constitutional basis for the then new nation. Unsurprisingly the first Canadian Copyright Act was enacted in 1868.
This book is a valuable and certainly topical contribution to the world story of copyright law, which has evolved almost alongside developments in worldwide commerce, creativity and trade. For researchers as well as practitioners and all interested in copyright, the careful footnoting is prodigious and there is a handy index to aids navigation. The publication date is 2013.

In addition to their rich array of international qualifications and experience, editors Uma Suthersanen and Ysolde Gendreau are professors of law at, respectively, Queen Mary, University of London and the Universite de Montreal, Canada. The book's other contributors, both academics and practitioners are variously from such jurisdictions as Australia, India, Israel, Jamaica, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa as well as the UK.
'A Shifting Empire' is an appropriate title for this book, as the story of copyright law within the old imperial nations is one of evolution; a continuing movement in the direction of legal systems which ultimately are designed to meet each individual nation's individual needs.
'Despite the fact that all the stories within this volume represent a different legal evolution,' say the editors, 'it is still possible to say that they are all a part of the British copyright legal family.'
An interesting example is cited in Ysolde Gendreau's essay on Canadian copyright law in which she remarks that 'the Imperial Copyright Act actually heralded Canada's copyright emancipation'. Indeed, she raises the possibility that the foundations for copyright sovereignty were laid with the British North America Act of 1867, the constitutional basis for the then new nation. Unsurprisingly the first Canadian Copyright Act was enacted in 1868.
This book is a valuable and certainly topical contribution to the world story of copyright law, which has evolved almost alongside developments in worldwide commerce, creativity and trade. For researchers as well as practitioners and all interested in copyright, the careful footnoting is prodigious and there is a handy index to aids navigation. The publication date is 2013.

The plot centres around a Professor (Karloff) who is to be buried with an Egyptian jewel in order to attain eternal life. When the jewel is stolen by his servant, the professor rises from the dead to reclaim it.
The film, based on the play and novel by Dr. Frank King and Leonard J. Hines, was once considered to be a lost film since the original nitrate negative had succumbed to decomposition and no prints of the film were known to exist. However, an incomplete and partly decomposed Czech release print was discovered which was the only available print for several decades. Then, finally, an excellent quality print was discovered in the archives of the British Film Institute.

This version is the Czech print. This item was public domain in the US due to the ommission of a copyright notice and failure to fulfill other copyright formalities.
