Turns out we've been carrying baby capsules all wrong

If you have a baby in an infant capsule that you click out of your car and carry around, prepare to have your life made a thousand times easier.

It's generally accepted that carrying around an baby capsule is incredibly taxing on your back and/or arms. You have the choice of either carrying the seat with both hands, leaving you unable to open doors or hold a toddler's hand, or carrying the seat like an oversized handbag with a baby in it.

Neither choice is awesome, and it's why I ditched my infant seat in favour of a convertible car seat when my eldest daughter was two months old and never revisited it with my other children.

But it turns out there is a much easier – and less taxing – way to carry an infant car seat, and it's super simple.

Dr Emily Puente of Bridge Family Chiropractic in Texas shared this handy trick on Facebook, and parents are losing their minds.

"It's not going to hurt your shoulder, it's not going to hurt your hip, and you're not going to have to use your knee to swing it like I had to do with my two [children]," she says in the video. "Someone taught me this before, and it's been the greatest thing."

Instead of hooking her elbow under the handle, Emily slides her hand through the handle and down towards the base of the car seat, then she twists her wrist and lifts up the car seat from the bottom. It looks gravity-defying but it's supported and safe – and it works.

"As soon as we switch to this, it's a completely different change in how I'm using my body, to be able to use and distribute this weight from this carrier to be able to carry it around," Emily says.

The video has been viewed 3.6 million times, with 53,000 sharing and thousands more tagging their friends in this life-changing baby hack.

In an update to the original video, Emily says there may be some infant car seats that won't work with this technique.

And one commenter said she found the position uncomfortable, so Emily recommended you get the all clear from your doctor if you have any issues "prior to trying any new regimen if you would like to ensure you are fit to perform actions like the one shown here."
