The Name-of-the-Father (French Nom du pΓ¨re) is a concept that Jacques Lacan developed from his seminar The Psychoses (1955β1956) to cover the role of the father in the Symbolic Order. Lacan plays with the similar sound of le nom du pΓ¨re (the name of the father), le non du pΓ¨re (the no of the father), and les non-dupes errent (the non-dupes err) to, in the former case, emphasize the legislative and prohibitive function of the father and, in the latter case, emphasize that "those who do not let themselves be caught in the symbolic deception/fiction and continue to believe their eyes are the ones who err most."
Lacan's concept draws on the mythical father of Freud's Totem and Taboo; and was used by him as a strategic move in his opposition to what he saw as the over-emphasis of object relations theory on the exclusive relationship of the individual and his/her mother as a dual pair. Lacan emphasised instead the importance of the third party in the Oedipus complex β what he called βthe place that she [the mother] reserves for the Name-of-the Father in the promulgation of the lawβ. He saw this as a vital element in helping each new member of the human race to move from an exclusive, primary relation to the mother[er] to a wider engagement with the outside, cultural world β the symbolic order.
Father is the male parent of a child.
Father may also refer to:
A father is the male parent of a child. Besides the paternal bonds of a father to his children, the father has a parental social and legal relationship with the child that carries with it certain rights and obligations, although this varies between jurisdictions. An adoptive father is a male who has become the child's parent through the legal process of adoption. A biological father is the male genetic contributor to the creation of the baby, through sexual intercourse or sperm donation. A biological father may have legal obligations to a child not raised by him, such as an obligation of monetary support. A putative father is a man whose biological relationship to a child is alleged but has not been established. A stepfather is a male who is the husband of a child's mother and they may form a family unit, but who generally does not have the legal rights and responsibilities of a parent in relation to the child.
The adjective "paternal" refers to a father and comparatively to "maternal" for a mother. The verb "to father" means to procreate or to sire a child from which also derives the noun "fathering". Biological fathers determine the sex of their child through a sperm cell which either contains an X chromosome (female), or Y chromosome (male). Related terms of endearment are dad (dada, daddy), papa/pappa, papasita, (pa, pap) and pop. A male role-model that children can look up to is sometimes referred to as a father-figure.
Gerard "Gerry" Conlon (1 March 1954 β 21 June 2014) was a member of the Guildford Four who spent 14 years in prison after being wrongly convicted of being a Provisional IRA bomber.
Gerry Conlon was born in Belfast and grew up in the impoverished but close-knit community of the Lower Falls Road. He described his childhood as happy. His father was Giuseppe Conlon, a factory worker, and his mother was Sarah Conlon, a hospital cleaner.
In 1974, at age 20, Conlon went to England to seek work and to escape the everyday violence he was encountering on the streets of Belfast. He was living with a group of squatters in London when he was arrested for the Guildford pub bombings, which occurred on 5 October the same year.
Conlon, along with fellow Irishmen Paul Hill and Paddy Armstrong and Englishwoman Carole Richardson, became the so-called Guildford Four convicted in 1975 of planting two bombs a year earlier in the Surrey town of Guildford which killed five people and injured dozens more. The four were sentenced to life in prison. At their trial the judge told the defendants, "If hanging were still an option you would have been executed."
Sir Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis (born 29 April 1957) is an English actor. He holds both British and Irish citizenship. Born and raised in London, he excelled on stage at the National Youth Theatre, before being accepted at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, which he attended for three years. Despite his traditional actor training at the Bristol Old Vic, he is considered to be a method actor, known for his constant devotion to and research of his roles. He often remains completely in character for the duration of the shooting schedules of his films, even to the point of adversely affecting his health. He is one of the most selective actors in the film industry, having starred in only five films since 1998, with as many as five years between roles.
Day-Lewis is one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation and has earned numerous awards, including three Academy Awards for Best Actor for his performances in My Left Foot (1989), There Will Be Blood (2007) and Lincoln (2012), making him the only male actor in history to have three wins in the lead actor category and one of only three male actors to win three Oscars. He was also Oscar nominated in this category for In the Name of the Father (1993) and Gangs of New York (2002). He has also won four BAFTA Awards for Best Actor, three Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. In November 2012, Time named Day-Lewis the "World's Greatest Actor." In June 2014, he received a knighthood at Buckingham Palace for services to drama.

[ Gerry Narrating ] Soon, we were all one happy family. - [ Bumping ] - Again! - Even Kojak was ready to forgive. - Live and let live. - Barker began to panic. - Pay him a visit.
From de OST of "In the Name of the Father" this amazing song still gives me the creeps. Sorry about the not-so-good quality, it surpasses my responsibility. Enjoy!
Skip to the second minute of this video to see one of the saddest scenes, in one of the saddest movies ever. Seriously, this movie will destroy you. Guiseppe is a pretty uncommon name, it will always remind me of Pete Postlethwaite. Even though Postlethwaite was fighting against cancer in 2010 he still did an exceptional job, he was a part of 4 movies during that time. Unfortunatelly in the first days of 2011 he passed away, he was only 64. Such a likable and a stand out actor, in every single one of his movies. Maybe I am just biased cause I really loved him as Giuseppe. Rest in Piece. Trivia about this movie: "In preparation for his role, Daniel Day-Lewis lost 30 pounds and spent nights in the jail cell on the set as crew members threw water and verbal abuse at him. " and also...

This is one of my favorite movies of all time, if you haven't seen it I suggest you watch it and hopefully come to love it as I have. Some events in history should never be forgotten, and this story is one of them. WARNING: Course language. Sorry if it's not too loud, I couldn't do much because of how quite the movie was, and I didn't want to have my music too overbearing compared to it.

just for my presentation...my favour scene in this movie...mixed two clips into one~enjoy it!!
This is a very powerful scene from one of my favorite films, In the Name of the Father. Directed by Jim Sheridan and released in 1993, this film is about the people who were wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for the IRA's bombing of the Guildford Pub. Known as the Guildford Four and the Maguire Seven, these people were used as scapegoats by the British authorities in a time when the United Kingdom was screaming for blood. In this scene, some of the prisoners create a distraction so that an attack on the Chief Prison Officer can be carried out. Daniel Day-Lewis: Gerry Conlon Don Baker: Joe McAndrew Pete Postlethwaite: Giuseppe Conlon John Benfield: Chief Prison Officer Barker
