Serious Stages designed, manufactured and installed the new ‘Other Stage’ at Glastonbury Festival, 25th – 28th June, 2015.
The Event Industry News Film Crew went on site less than a week before the festival opened it's doors to learn about the 'Other Stage' and of course the iconic Pyramid Stage.
Serious Stages' Simon Fursman talks exclusively to Event Industry News about constructing this new stage for the first time and tells us about some of the other 60 structures the company installed across the 900 acre site.

Saturday night 2011 at Glastonbury was a fantastic evening. Previous day was heavy rain but by Sat evening the weather had turned and everyone was in really great spirits. First Elbow with great sing a-longs and then Coldplay with all their lasers and stuff. Lighting up the outside of the Pyramid stage during this heir last number was a great climax. It was much more impressive in real life than on this video, the lighting was brighter and the sheer size of the faces of the Pyramid stage made it really impressive. (Tech note, to achieve this they had 3 very tall towers, one for each face, with projection equipment on each. Although the towers stood there for the whole festival they were only used for this one song, so quite an investment for this one effect. Watched them setting up projectors on Thursday night. Also noticed the lasers set up around the back of the field were in place by Thursday, each one guarded by a "security person" 24 hours a day. Again only used during Coldplay's show.)

Glastonbury Festival
Glastonbury Festival is a five-day festival of contemporary performing arts that takes place near Pilton, Somerset, England. In addition to contemporary music, the festival hosts dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, and other arts. Leading pop and rock artists have headlined, alongside thousands of others appearing on smaller stages and performance areas. Films and albums recorded at Glastonbury have been released, and the festival receives extensive television and newspaper coverage. Glastonbury is the largest greenfield festival in the world, and is now attended by around 175,000 people, requiring extensive infrastructure in terms of security, transport, water, and electricity supply. The majority of staff are volunteers, helping the festival to raise millions of pounds for good causes.
Inspired by the ethos of the hippie, counterculture, and free festival movements, the festival retains vestiges of these traditions, such as the Green Fields area, which includes sections known as the Green Futures and Healing Fields. After the 1970s, the festival took place almost every year and grew in size, with the number of attendees sometimes being swollen by gate-crashers. Michael Eavis hosted the first festival, then called Pilton Festival, after seeing an open-air Led Zeppelin concert at the 1970 Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music.

Glastonbury

Glastonbury /ˈɡlæstənbri/ is a small town in Somerset, England, situated at a dry point on the low-lying Somerset Levels, 23 miles (37 km) south of Bristol. The town, which is in the Mendip district, had a population of 8,932 in the 2011 census. Glastonbury is less than 1 mile (2 km) across the River Brue from Street, which is now larger than Glastonbury.
Evidence from timber trackways such as the Sweet Track show that the town has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Glastonbury Lake Village was an Iron Age village, close to the old course of the River Brue and Sharpham Park approximately 2 miles (3 km) west of Glastonbury, that dates back to the Bronze Age. Centwine was the first Saxon patron of Glastonbury Abbey, which dominated the town for the next 700 years. One of the most important abbeys in England, it was the site of Edmund Ironside's coronation as King of England in 1016. Many of the oldest surviving buildings in the town, including the Tribunal, George Hotel and Pilgrims' Inn and the Somerset Rural Life Museum, which is based in an old tithe barn, are associated with the abbey. The Church of St John the Baptist dates from the 15th century.

Pyramid
A pyramid (from Greek: πυραμίς pyramis) is a structure whose outer surfaces are triangular and converge to a single point at the top, making the shape roughly a pyramid in the geometric sense. The base of a pyramid can be trilateral, quadrilateral, or any polygon shape, meaning that a pyramid has at least three outer triangular surfaces (at least four faces including the base). The square pyramid, with square base and four triangular outer surfaces, is a common version.
A pyramid's design, with the majority of the weight closer to the ground, and with the pyramidion on top means that less material higher up on the pyramid will be pushing down from above. This distribution of weight allowed early civilizations to create stable monumental structures. More recently, it was shown that the common shape of the pyramids of antiquity, from Egypt to Central America, represents the dry-stone construction that requires minimum human work.

Jeremy Corbyn
Jeremy Bernard Corbyn (/kɔːrbɪn/; born 26 May 1949) is a British politician who is the Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Islington North since 1983 and was elected Labour Leader in 2015. Ideologically, he identifies as a democratic socialist.
Born in Chippenham in Wiltshire, Corbyn attended Adams' Grammar School and later North London Polytechnic without attaining a degree. Before entering politics he worked as a representative for various trade unions. His political career began when he was elected to Haringey Council in 1974 and later was secretary of the Islington Constituency Labour Party (CLP). He continued in both roles until he entered the House of Commons as an MP.
Corbyn has received awards for his work as an international human rights campaigner. As an MP he is known for his activism and rebelliousness, frequently voting against the Labour whip when the party was in government under New Labour leaders Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Corbyn advocates an anti-austerity platform of reversing austerity cuts to public sector and welfare funding made since 2010, proposing preventing tax evasion and avoidance by corporations and wealthy individuals, reducing corporate subsidies, and pursuing an invest-to-grow economic strategy as an alternative. He proposes renationalisation of public utilities and the railways, abolishing university tuition fees, and financing "People's Quantitative Easing" to fund infrastructure and renewable energy projects. A longstanding anti-war and anti-nuclear activist, Corbyn supports a foreign policy of military non-interventionism and a unilateral policy of nuclear disarmament. Corbyn is a member of the Socialist Campaign Group, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Amnesty International and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). He was the national chair of the Stop the War Coalition from June 2011 until September 2015.

Saturday night 2011 at Glastonbury was a fantastic evening. Previous day was heavy rain but by Sat evening the weather had turned and everyone was in really great spirits. First Elbow with great sing a-longs and then Coldplay with all their lasers and stuff. Lighting up the outside of the Pyramid stage during this heir last number was a great climax. It was much more impressive in real life than on this video, the lighting was brighter and the sheer size of the faces of the Pyramid stage made it really impressive. (Tech note, to achieve this they had 3 very tall towers, one for each face, with projection equipment on each. Although the towers stood there for the whole festival they were only used for this one song, so quite an investment for this one effect. Watched them setting up projectors on Thursday night. Also noticed the lasers set up around the back of the field were in place by Thursday, each one guarded by a "security person" 24 hours a day. Again only used during Coldplay's show.)

Most music festival fans will try the music festival camping and the music festival camping is a integral part of the music festival experience. I have been to a few music festivals such as Sonisphere Music Festival and Download Music Festival but I have always love the idea of one day going to Reading & Leeds Music Festival, Glastonbury Music Festival, Hyde Park Calling Festival, Isle Of Wight Festival, Bloodstock Music Festival and maybe Woodstock Festival, Burning Man Festival, Wacken Music Festival, or even Sweden Rocks Music Festival sometime in the future.
Music Festivals can be a great way to meet people and find new bands and normally have big music festival headliners with fantastic live sets such as Metallica, Rammstein, Avenged Sevenfold, Muse, Eminem, Chase and Status, Paramore, Guns and Roses, Foo Fighters, Slipknot, Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, Linkin Park, and many other live music festival headliners and live festival sets that draw thousands in to enjoy their favourite music festival.

1. TAKE A BIGGER TENT THAN YOU’LL NEED
Always add a “person” to the size tent you’re taking to your festival. If there’s two of you, get a three-man tent.
2. DON’T PACK A PILLOW, PACK A PILLOW CASE!
You’ll struggle to fit a pillow into your rucksack, so why bother?
3. WRAP SOME GAFFER TAPE AROUND A WATER BOTTLE
You don’t need to pack a whole roll of the stuff, just enough in case of an unexpected rip/tear/deflation/tent pole snap.
4. TAKE A CRAP PHONE
Your iPhone 6 may be great, but but its a real battery whore.
5. INVEST IN A PHONE CHARGER
You don’t want to spend the majority of your weekend queuing with ten thousand people.
6. EAT ONE SOLID MEAL A DAY
Raving all day and raving all night takes up a lot of energy, so make sure you eat properly.
7. STASH SOME DRY CLOTHES IF YOU CAN
If you drive and you’re taking a car to the festival, leave a spare pair of jeans and socks in the car, so when you leave after four days of torrential downpour, you'll be warm and snug.
8. GET MINIMAL WITH YOUR TOILETRIES
Anything you pack makes for extra weight to be carried or dragged from your house to the festival site, so travelling smartly can be a boon.
9. PACK A MALLET
The amount of times we’ve turned up at a festival and had to try and push our tent pegs into the hard, unforgiving stony ground.
10. SEALABLE SANDWICH BAGS WILL SAVE YOUR STUFF
Put your phone, money and other valuables inside and seal!
11. INVEST IN WATER AND BANANAS
One morning you will be worse the wear from alcohol, so you need a cure.
12. KEEP A LAYER OF CLOTHING IN RESERVE
No matter how cold you are, there's always potential for it to get colder.
13. BE A CLEVER CAMPER
Try and get on site as early as you can. The earlier you are, the better spot you can bag. Don’t fret if you arrive later, though - just be prepared to walk further to your campsite.
14. KNOW YOUR PLACE
Remember where you’ve pitched your tent and its relation to the festival site.
15. HIDE SOME MONEY IN YOUR PHONE CASE
There are ATMs on site, but queuing for them is a huge waste of your weekend.
16. PLAN YOUR POCKETS
Keep your essential items in the same pockets, so despite how drunk you get you’ll always remember where your phone or wallet is.
17. WET WIPES ARE YOUR BATHROOM NOW
Forget trying to have a proper wash or queuing for a shower, stock up on LOTS of wet wipes and freshen yourself up that way.
18. KNOW YOUR TOILETS
The festival toilet is a tricky beast to negotiate, but do not fear it.
19. MIND THOSE STINGY HANDS
Contact lens wearer? Always wash your hands before putting your lenses in!
20. DON’T WEAR A ONESIE
It may be utterly chic, but you may have to unbutton it in a portable toilet cubicle in the dark, and nobody wants that. Photo: Amazon
21. CREATE YOUR OWN MEETING POINT
If you lose your friends and can’t contact them, work out a way of being spotted from a distance.
22. HEAD TORCHES ARE YOUR FRIEND
Because you can pretend you're Orbital in the dance tent and you'll be able to spot those pesky guy ropes on the way back to your tent in a pitch black field.
23. CREATE YOUR OWN “QUIET SPACE”
Your energy will flag if you don’t get any sleep, so invest in some ear plugs and an eye mask.
24. MAKE YOUR OWN SUPER LANTERN
Light up your camping space by strapping a regular head lamp to a large milk or water bottle.
25. NACHOS MAKE GREAT KINDLING FOR A CAMPFIRE
It’s true. Any nacho will do, look this guy will show you how.
26. REMEMBER THE PINCER MOVEMENT
Use the pincer movement to get nearer to the front of the crowd.
27. DON’T GO MUD SURFING
You may get your photo in the papers, but you'll be caked in dry shit for days.
28. LEAVE EARLY… OR LEAVE LATE
Make sure you plan your getaway!

Coldplay Glastonbury 2011 - Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall
Saturday night 2011 at Glastonbury was a fantastic evening. Previous day was heavy rain but by Sat evening the weather had turned and everyone was in really great spirits. First Elbow with great sing a-longs and then Coldplay with all their lasers and stuff. Lighting up the outside of the Pyramid stage during this heir last number was a great climax. It was much more impressive in real life than on this video, the lighting was brighter and the sheer size of the faces of the Pyramid stage made it really impressive. (Tech note, to achieve this they had 3 very tall towers, one for each face, with projection equipment on each. Although the towers stood there for the whole festival they were only used for this one song, so quite an investment for this one effect. Watched them setting up project...

Saturday night 2011 at Glastonbury was a fantastic evening. Previous day was heavy rain but by Sat evening the weather had turned and everyone was in really great spirits. First Elbow with great sing a-longs and then Coldplay with all their lasers and stuff. Lighting up the outside of the Pyramid stage during this heir last number was a great climax. It was much more impressive in real life than on this video, the lighting was brighter and the sheer size of the faces of the Pyramid stage made it really impressive. (Tech note, to achieve this they had 3 very tall towers, one for each face, with projection equipment on each. Although the towers stood there for the whole festival they were only used for this one song, so quite an investment for this one effect. Watched them setting up projectors on Thursday night. Also noticed the lasers set up around the back of the field were in place by Thursday, each one guarded by a "security person" 24 hours a day. Again only used during Coldplay's show.)

Before their third headline appearance at Glastonbury, Matt Bellamy of Muse spoke about his desire to strip back the production and remind everyone that Muse are a rock band who can really rock. Well, they certainly did the latter but if this is his idea of stripped back he'd be the best dressed man at a nudist colony. Although this production was inevitably toned down from Muse's spectacular hi-tech indoor arena show, it wasn't exactly back to basics. Norah Jones played her first ever Glastonbury set on the Pyramid Stage stage on the last day of the festival today (June 27). The daughter of famed sitarist Ravi Shankar played a 50-minute set to an appreciative crowd. "How are you guys out there?" asked the Brooklyn-born and Texas-raised singer-songwriter after 'Light As A Feather'. "It's like Texas out there!" Interview with West Nkosi, one of the greatest producers of South African Music
When South African music was becoming popular in Japan, I had a chance to interview one of the most important & greatest producers, West Nkosi, behind the Pyramid Stage of Glastonbury Festival back in 1989. He was there with Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens and I was video shooting their live performances as well. With having very little knowledge of their music and career, I was asking some simple questions, but, as you can see, he was giving me some great answers and stories of the music history born in the era of Apartheid. This took place before Nelson Mandela was free from jail. I hear he passed away in 1998. R.I.P.

Before their third headline appearance at Glastonbury, Matt Bellamy of Muse spoke about his desire to strip back the production and remind everyone that Muse are a rock band who can really rock. Well, they certainly did the latter but if this is his idea of stripped back he'd be the best dressed man at a nudist colony.
Although this production was inevitably toned down from Muse's spectacular hi-tech indoor arena show, it wasn't exactly back to basics. No budget could buy you the spectacular setting of a gorgeous star and moonlit night at Worthy farm, where the Pyramid stage arises amid a vast sea of people. But the audience is Glastonbury's real special effect. With their flares and flags, their sheer size spreading up the hillside, and air of participatory singalong enthusiasm they lend a character that no hi-tech effect could match. And with darkness descending , Muse didn't exactly stint on the lights, LED screens, confetti and fireworks.

Bellamy is a virtuoso electric guitarist with a fluid touch, daring imagination and axe hero swagger. He incorporates classical motifs into his riffs and leads, sometimes soloing like a wild baroque organist. And he plays the piano flamboyantly well too, and sings like a choir boy crossed with Freddie Mercury.
He is one of the most copiously talented band leaders since Prince, and while Muse didn't pay tribute to the Minneapolis wonder their debt to him was clear in a slick, sexy performance of Supermassive Black Hole. Bellamy is more than ably supported by rhythm section Dominic Howard and Chris Wolstenholme, who offered up a techno-influenced drum and bass solo to show they could make a monumental noise without their band leader.
They wound down near the end with apocalyptic ballad The Globalist serenading the destruction of "the great nation we were." But despite the overtly political themes of their current album Drones, Bellamy made no mention of the historic events of the day. I suspect that this is because the conspiracy theorist and fan of small-is-better, city state politics was one of the few at Glastonbury who always favoured Brexit.
But set closer Knights of Cydonia's motif of "you and I must fight for our rights" had Glastonbury punching the air and roaring. Whatever your convictions, Muse's fantastic full tilt performance made sure that this strange day ended on a blazing high note for everyone, another reminder that live music at it's best can be a particularly stirring demonstration of the power of community and togetherness.

The daughter of famed sitarist Ravi Shankar played a 50-minute set to an appreciative crowd.
"How are you guys out there?" asked the Brooklyn-born and Texas-raised singer-songwriter after 'Light As A Feather'. "It's like Texas out there!"
Playing her hits 'Don't Know Why' – accompanied just by a piano and a member of her band providing harmonies – and 'Come Away With Me', Jones' relaxed set saw her switching between electric guitar and keys.
"You guys are enjoying the sun, right? Were you awake for the sunrise?" she asked before she took to the piano and played 'Sunrise'.
"You guys like Johnny Cash?", said Jones before proceeding to play a cover of his early song 'Cry Cry Cry'.
"I don't think it's every day I get to open up for Slash, so thank you Glastonbury for that," added Jones towards the end of her show.

When South African music was becoming popular in Japan, I had a chance to interview one of the most important & greatest producers, West Nkosi, behind the Pyramid Stage of Glastonbury Festival back in 1989. He was there with Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens and I was video shooting their live performances as well. With having very little knowledge of their music and career, I was asking some simple questions, but, as you can see, he was giving me some great answers and stories of the music history born in the era of Apartheid. This took place before Nelson Mandela was free from jail. I hear he passed away in 1998. R.I.P.
