An international airport is an airport that offers customs and immigration facilities for passengers travelling between countries. International airports are typically larger than domestic airports and often feature longer runways and facilities to accommodate the heavier aircraft commonly used for international and intercontinental travel. International airports often also host domestic flights. Some, such as Frankfurt Airport in Germany are very large; others such as Fa'a'ā International Airport in Tahiti, are quite small.
Buildings, operations and management have become increasingly sophisticated since the mid 20th century, when international airports began to provide infrastructure for international civilian flights. Detailed technical standards have been developed to ensure safety and common coding systems implemented to provide global consistency. The physical structures that serve millions of individual passengers and flights are among the most complex and interconnected in the world. By the second decade of the 21st century, there were over 1,200 international airports and almost two billion international passengers along with 50 million metric tonnes of cargo were passing through them annually.
Shanghai Pudong International Airport (IATA: PVG, ICAO: ZSPD) is the primary international airport serving Shanghai, and a major aviation hub for Asia. The city's other major airport, Hongqiao, mainly serves domestic flights. Located about 30 kilometres (19 mi) east of the city centre, Pudong Airport occupies a 40-square-kilometre (10,000-acre) site adjacent to the coastline in eastern Pudong. The airport is operated by Shanghai Airport Authority (Chinese: 上海机场集团有限公司, SSE: 600009).
The airport is the main hub for China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines, and a major international hub for Air China. It is also the hub for privately owned Juneyao Airlines and Spring Airlines, and an Asian-Pacific cargo hub for UPS and DHL. The DHL hub, opened in July 2012, is said to be the biggest express hub in Asia.
Pudong Airport has two main passenger terminals, flanked on both sides by four parallel runways. A third passenger terminal is planned for 2015, in addition to a satellite terminal and two additional runways, raising its annual capacity from 60 million passengers to 80 million, along with the ability to handle six million tonnes of freight.
Shanghai Pudong can refer to:
Pudong is a district of Shanghai, China, located east of the Huangpu River across from the historic city center of Shanghai in Puxi. The name refers to its historic position as "The East Bank" of the Huangpu River, which flows through central Shanghai, although it is now administered as the Pudong New Area, a state-level new area which extends all the way to the East China Sea.
The traditional area of Pudong is now home to the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone and the Shanghai Stock Exchange and many of Shanghai's best-known buildings, such as the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Jin Mao Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center, and the Shanghai Tower. These modern skyscrapers directly face Puxi's historic Bund, a remnant of a former foreign concessions in China. The rest of the new area includes the Shanghai Expo and Century Park, Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, Pudong international airport, the Jiuduansha Wetland Nature Reserve, and a planned Disney resort.
Pudong—literally "The East Bank of the Huangpu River"—originally referred only to the less-developed land across from Shanghai's Old City and foreign concessions. The area was mainly farmland and only slowly developed, with warehouses and wharfs near the shore administered by the districts of Puxi on the west bank: Huangpu, Yangpu, and Nanshi. Pudong was originally established as a county in 1958 until 1961 which the county was split among Huangpu, Yangpu, Nanshi, Wusong and Chuansha County. In October 1, 1992 the original area of Pudong County and Chuansha County merged and established Pudong New Area.
Shanghai is the largest Chinese city by population and the largest city proper by population in the world. It is one of the four direct-controlled municipalities of China, with a population of more than 24 million as of 2014. It is a global financial center, and a transport hub with the world's busiest container port. Located in the Yangtze River Delta in East China, Shanghai sits on the south edge of the mouth of the Yangtze in the middle portion of the Chinese coast. The municipality borders the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang to the north, south and west, and is bounded to the east by the East China Sea.
For centuries a major administrative, shipping, and trading town, Shanghai grew in importance in the 19th century due to European recognition of its favorable port location and economic potential. The city was one of five forced open to foreign trade following the British victory over China in the First Opium War while the subsequent 1842 Treaty of Nanking and 1844 Treaty of Whampoa allowed the establishment of the Shanghai International Settlement and the French Concession. The city then flourished as a center of commerce between east and west, and became the undisputed financial hub of the Asia Pacific in the 1930s. However, with the Communist Party takeover of the mainland in 1949, trade was reoriented to focus on socialist countries, and the city's global influence declined. In the 1990s, the economic reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping resulted in an intense re-development of the city, aiding the return of finance and foreign investment to the city.

I like fast! This is one of the fastest trains in the world. Making what could be a 45-90 minute bus or subway ride into only about 7 mins. This train runs on magnets and transported us from Pudong International Airport, which is far to the east of downtown Shanghai, into the downtown area.
A short video taken from onboard the recently opened Shanghai MagLev Train that runs from Pudong International Airport into the city. I had arrived at the airport early and had some time to kill, so I did a round trip into the city and back again. The train tops out at 431km/h, which is roughly 270mph. It suddenly stops accelerating at 431, so I think it's electronically limited and could probably go much faster. A few notable moments in the video.... around 00:55 we come to the first corner, and of course the best way to go quickly around a corner is to bank the track, so thats what they did. There's a terrifying moment around 01:40, then towards the end you get to see the onboard speedo clocking a sustained 430~431km/h .

The ride to the airport on the high speed Maglev train in Shanghai. In cooperation with the Shanghai municipality and the Shanghai Maglev Transportation Development Co. (SMT), German Transrapid constructed the first commercial high speed Maglev railway in the world in 2002, from Shanghai's Longyang Road subway station in Pudong to Pudong International Airport. Commercial operation started in 2003. The 30 km trip takes 7 minutes and 21 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 431 km/h (267.8 mph). Normal operating speeds usually reach 431 km/h or 300 km/h in early morning or evening, but during a test run, the Maglev has been shown to reach a top speed of 501 km/h.

Speeding at 430 kilometers an hour, The Shanghai MAGLEV train - or Shanghai Transrapid - turns the 30 kilometre journey from China’s Pudong International Airport to Shanghai into an eight-minute joyride. Parallax Film Productions profiles the ultimate engineering and the magnetic levitation science behind its construction. This documentary shows how the Shanghai MAGLEV train is brought from prototype to commercial system in less than two years. All trains, propulsion, and control systems for Shanghai are built in Germany and shipped to China for installation. When the MAGLEV guideways were built to rise 30 metres above the streetscape, the pilings were driven into the ground to a depth of 70 metres to support the guide track and prevent settling. The result: MAGLEV travels at lightening...

Wide awake
I'm on a plane out of town
Fly away
From the weight of the world
On the ground
I'm international
But I don't know where to go
Hopefully where summer days
Can melt these winter bones
I'm international
And you're orbiting my brain
I'm reduced to writing nothing
All over napkins on the plane
Wide awake
I'm on a plane out of town
Taking pictures of myself
In the mirror on wall
Trying hard not to make my space
The loneliest place of all
Early warning all across the sky
Clouds are rolling in on your light
Any change from here would be
The wisest change of all
Any place from here up here
Would be the finest place to fall
Wide awake
I'm on a plane out of town
I'm losing track of myself
On all the time zone lines
And if I daylight save
Do I jump ahead or fall behind?
And I'm fine 'cause I know
Any plane I ride
Can fly me home
And I'm fine 'cause I know
You know, I know
It's easy to see
Clouds were built for dreams
Because nothing up there
Is as easy as it seems
I step out
And try to walk around
As I fall, I look up
And wonder why it let me down
I'm international
That's twice the speed of sound
I just hope I take off from here
Before I hit the ground
If I could get to heaven
By an airplane in the sky
We would always be in love
And we would always love to fly
Wide awake
I'm on a plane out of town
Taking pictures of myself
In the mirror on wall
Trying hard not to make my space
The loneliest place of all
And I'm fine 'cause I know
Any plane I ride
Can fly me home
And I'm fine 'cause I know
You know, I know
And I'm fine 'cause I know
Any plane I ride
Can fly me home
And I'm fine 'cause I know
Any plane I ride
Can fly me home
You know, I know
