Helderberg is a wine-producing area in the Western Cape of South Africa.
Originally known as the "Hottentots-Holland" area, it was renamed "Helderberg" by the City of Cape Town following concerns about possible racist connotations in the name. However, many people who live there still refer to it by its former name.
The Helderberg consists of Somerset West, Strand, Gordons Bay and a few other towns. The district takes its name from the imposing Helderberg Mountain, which is Afrikaans for "clear mountain", and culminates at a height of 1137m as The Dome.
Local media in the region include the District Mail, a local newspaper, and Radio Helderberg.

South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.
South African Airways (SAA) is the national flag carrier and largest airline of South Africa, with headquarters in Airways Park on the grounds of OR Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. The airline flies to 38 destinations worldwide from its hub at OR Tambo International Airport, using a fleet of 54 aircraft. Thuli Mpshe was appointed as the acting CEO of SAA in August after Nico Bezuidenhout, the former acting CEO of SAA returned as CEO of Mango.
South African Airways was founded in 1934 after the acquisition of Union Airways by the South African government. The airline was initially overseen and controlled by South African Railways and Harbours Administration. Sanctions by African countries which would have otherwise provided stopover airports during apartheid forced it to adopt long-range aircraft and other measures to counter these restrictions. During this time, it was also known by its Afrikaans name, Suid-Afrikaanse Lugdiens (SAL), which has been dropped. In 1997 a major overhaul programme, which involved a change of name, image and aircraft livery, as well as the introduction of online ticketing services, was carried out by the company's board. In 2006, SAA split from Transnet, its parent company, to operate as an independent airline.
South African Airways Flight 295, flown by a Boeing 747 named Helderberg was a commercial flight from Taiwan to South Africa that suffered a catastrophic in-flight fire in the cargo area and crashed into the Indian Ocean east of Mauritius on 28 November 1987, killing everyone on board. An extensive salvage operation was mounted to try to recover the flight data recorders, one of which was recovered from a depth of 4,900 metres (16,100 ft)—the deepest successful salvage operation ever conducted. The official inquiry, headed by Judge Cecil Margo, was unable to determine the cause of the fire, leading to a number of conspiracy theories being advanced in the following years.
South African Airways Flight 295 was a Boeing 747-244B Combi, named The Helderberg (registration ZS-SAS; serial number 22171) that was delivered to the airline in 1980. The aircraft took off on 27 November 1987 from Taipei Chiang Kai Shek International Airport, on a flight to Johannesburg via Mauritius. Dawie Uys served as the captain of the flight.

Renewed bid to investigate Helderberg crash
This is my tribute video to the South African Airways flight 295 crash near the island of Mauritius. When you see the helderberg (which is what the 747 is called in South Africa) explode that is not the helderberg that is fligt 800. I hope it does not offend anyone because in the documentary (air crash investigation) did not show the the plane explode. I used music from The Lord of the Rings and only music from Lord of the Rings. This is dedicated to all those lives that were lost on November 27 1987 in south African airways flight 295. This was like 9 11 for America to South Africa at the time. This is the worst aviation accident of all time for south African airways. I know you see some of the shots with the Apartheid government 747 but I can assure you that I do not support the aparthei...

25 years after the Helderberg disaster, many still speculate about the cause of the crash. Peter Otzen is ready to find the truth 25 years after his father was killed in the crash.
Today marks exactly 27 years since one of the most horrific air crashes in South African History. In 1987,an SAA boeing 747 - the Helderberg - disappeared off radar screens. The plane crashed, killing all on board. To date, questions still linger around the cause of the accident.
It's 25 years since the Helderberg plane crash in which all 159 people on board died. Now a Constitutional Court bid is in place to find out what really happened on that day...more on the story...http://ow.ly/fEu0G
