Syros
Syros (/ˈsaɪrɒs, -roʊs/; Greek: Σύρος), or Siros or Syra is a Greek island in the Cyclades, in the Aegean Sea. It is located 78 nautical miles (144 km) south-east of Athens. The area of the island is 83.6 km2 (32 sq mi) and it has 21,507 inhabitants (2011 census).
The largest towns are Ermoupoli, Ano Syros, and Vari. Ermoupoli is the capital of the island and of the Cyclades. It has always been a significant port town, and during the 19th century it was even more significant than Piraeus. Other villages are Galissas, Foinikas, Pagos, Manna, Kini and Poseidonia.

Ermoupoli (Greek: Ερμούπολη) stands on a naturally amphitheatrical site, with neo-classical buildings, old mansions and white houses cascading down to the harbour. The City Hall, where Miaoulis Square lies ringed with cafes and with seating areas under palm trees. The "City of Hermes" has numerous churches, including Metamorphosis, Koimisis, St. Demetrius, Three Hierarchs, Anastasis, Evangelistria and St. Nicolas. The Archaeological Museum has many finds and the Municipal Library contains numerous editions. The quarter of the town known as Vaporia is where the sea captains lived. Along its narrow streets, stand numerous neo-classical mansions.

Υπήρξε ναυτικό, βιομηχανικό και πολιτιστικό κέντρο του νέου ελληνικού κράτους.
Ο Όμηρος την ονομάζει "Συρίη" , ενώ τον 17ο αιώνα αναφέρεται και ως το νησί του Πάπα: "L'isola del Papa", λόγω του καθολικού δόγματος των κατοίκων της.
Η Σύρος βρίσκεται στο κεντρικό σημείο των Κυκλάδων και απέχει 83 ναυτικά μίλια από τον Πειραιά και 62 από τη Ραφήνα. Η έκτασή της είναι 84,069 τ.χλμ..
Συνορεύει με αρκετά νησιά του κυκλαδίτικου συμπλέγματος. Στα βόρεια βρίσκεται η Άνδρος, βορειοανατολικά η Τήνος και ανατολικά η Μύκονος καθώς και τα μικρά νησιά της Δήλου και της Ρήνειας. Βορειοδυτικά βρίσκονται η Κέα και η Γυάρος, δυτικά η Κύθνος και νοτιοδυτικά η Σέριφος. Στα νότια βρίσκονται η Σίφνος, η Αντίπαρος, η Πάρος και η Νάξος.
Το βόρειο μέρος της Σύρου, που ονομάζεται Απάνω Μεριά, είναι ορεινό και κατοικείται από ελάχιστους κατοίκους. Το τμήμα αυτό του νησιού έχει ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον διότι διαφέρει μορφολογικά από το υπόλοιπο. Είναι το μοναδικό μέρος που έχει ασβεστολιθικά πετρώματα, σε αντίθεση με το υπόλοιπο νησί που καλύπτεται από ηφαιστειακά πετρώματα. The woman who was kissed by an ecstatic sailor in Times Square celebrating the end of World War II has died at the age of 92. Greta Zimmer Friedman's son says his mother died Thursday at a hospital in Richmond, Virginia. She died from complications of old age, he said. Nasa has sent a spacecraft chasing after an unexplored asteroid, in the hope that it might one day keep us from being destroyed. The Osiris-Rex robotic hunter has blasted off to the asteroid Bennu. When it gets there it will scoop up bits of ancient space rock - which could eventually tell us not just about where we came from but whether there is life elsewhere as well ...
