Piraeus is one of the oldest ports in the Mediterranean. It reached its zenith in the fifth century BC as a port of Athens and main shopping center of the known world. Today it is the first port in Europe in passenger traffic of up to 20 million annually and the country's main port, providing full services to cruise ships. It is the main port of Athens. Athens and Piraeus have many points of interest in tourism and culture.
The port of Piraeus has two fully equipped passenger terminals, and soon a third terminal with all the services and facilities for passengers, such as: air-conditioned spaces, passenger and baggage control systems, check-in services, free transportation of passengers by bus, application of the security code ISPS, luggage, catering, souvenir shops, free wireless internet, hop on / off buses etc.

One of the most high profile port development projects for the Belt and Road Initiative is Piraeus in Greece. Within five years of operation, China's COSCO Shipping Limited aims to make Piraeus the south gate of the China-Europe land-sea express section of the Belt and Road route, a move that would speed up transportation between China and Europe. What have Chinese investors and their Greek partners been doing on this project, and where will it lead to? CGTN’s Zou Yue visited the port to find out the answer.

The port of Piraeus is the largest passenger port in Europe. Cruise liners, ferries and excursion boats permanently reach or leave the port. Piraeus serves as a port already since 500 BC. The arrival and departure of the ships is so interesting that we can spend some hours of the afternoon and the evening here. Another reason to stay here is the free public Internet access in the port.
As a complete contrast, we visit two marinas in the area of Athens the next day.

Piräus ist der größte Passagierhafen Europas. Kreuzfahrtschiffe, Fähren und Ausflugsboote erreichen oder verlassen ständig den Hafen. Piräus dient bereits seit 500 v. Chr. als Hafen.
Wir finden das Ein- und Auslaufen der Schiffe so interessant, dass wir einige Nachmittagsstunden und einige Abendstunden hier verbringen, vor allem weil es hier auch einen kostenlosen öffentlichen Internet Zugang gibt.
Am nächsten Tag besuchen wir als Kontrastprogramm auch noch zwei Yachthäfen in Athen, die sich in nicht allzu weiter Entfernung befinden.

A walking travel tour of Athens and Piraeus in Greece.
This was my very first walking tour video. I apologize for the shaky footage.
The film chronologically progresses from morning to night, showing daily life around Athens and Piraeus.
For those planning on visiting, those who’d like to visit but cannot or those who might be nostalgic and want to re-live their past visits / life there, hopefully this film shall satisfy, time and time again.
Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece with an urban population of over three million.
Athens is recognized as a global city because of its location and its importance in shipping, finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, culture, education and tourism. It is one of the biggest economic centres in southeastern Europe, with a large financial sector, and its port Piraeus is both the largest passenger port in Europe and the second largest in the world.
The dominant feature of Athens's climate is alternation between prolonged hot and dry summers and mild winters with moderate rainfall.
Athens dominates the Attica region and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years. Classical Athens, as a landlocked location was a powerful city-state that emerged in conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus.
A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy.

Piraeus (/paɪˈriːəs, pɪˈreɪ.əs/; Greek: Πειραιάς Pireás [pireˈas], Ancient Greek: Πειραιεύς, Peiraieús, pronounced [peːrajeús]) is a port city in the region of Attica, Greece. Piraeus is located within the Athens urban area,12 kilometres (7 miles) southwest from its city center (municipality of Athens), and lies along the east coast of the Saronic Gulf.
According to the 2011 census, Piraeus had a population of 163,688 people within its administrative limits, making it the fourth largest municipality in Greece and the second largest within the urban area of the Greek capital, following the municipality of Athens. The municipality of Piraeus and several other suburban municipalities within the regional unit of Piraeus form the greater Piraeus area, with a total population of 448,997.
Piraeus has a long recorded history, dating to ancient Greece. The city was largely developed in the early 5th century BC, when it was selected to serve as the port city of classical Athens and was transformed into a prototype harbour, concentrating all the import and transit trade of Athens. During the Golden Age of Athens the Long Walls were constructed to connect Athens with Piraeus. Consequently, it became the chief harbour of ancient Greece, but declined gradually after the 4th century AD, growing once more in the 19th century, especially after Athens' declaration as the capital of Greece. In the modern era, Piraeus is a large city, bustling with activity and an integral part of Athens, acting as home to the country's biggest harbour and bearing all the characteristics of a huge marine and commercial-industrial centre.

Port of Piraeus
The Port of Piraeus, as the largest Greek seaport, is one of the largest seaports in Europe and the world, located in the Mediterranean Sea basin. The Port of Piraeus served as the port of Athens since the ancient times.
Today, the Port of Piraeus is a major employer in the region, with more than 2,500 employees who provide services to more than 40,000 ships and 20.000.000 passengers every year, and is operated by the Piraeus Port Authority S.A., a state-owned company. According to Lloyd's list for top 100 container ports in 2015 Piraeus ranked 8th in Europe and 3rd the Mediterranean sea.This rapid growth is expecting to make Piraeus the biggest commercial port in the Mediterranean by 2016.
History
Until the 3rd millennium BC, Piraeus was a rocky island connected to the mainland by a low-lying stretch of land that was flooded with sea water most of the year. It was then that the area was increasingly silted and flooding ceased, thus permanently connecting Piraeus to Attica and forming its ports, the main port of Cantharus and the two smaller of Zea and Munichia. In 493 BC, Themistocles initiated the fortifications of Piraeus and later advised the Athenians to take advantage of its natural harbours' strategic potential. In 483 BC, the Athenian fleet left the older harbour of Phaleron and it was transferred to Piraeus, distinguishing itself at the battle of Salamis between the Greek city-states and the Persians in 480 BC. In the following years Themistocles initiated the construction of the port and created the ship sheds (neosoikoi), while the Themistoclean Walls were completed in 471 BC, turning Piraeus into a great military and commercial harbour, which served as the permanent navy base for the mighty Athenian fleet. However, in the late 4th century BC began a long period of decline for Piraeus; the harbours were only occasionally used for the Byzantine fleet and the city was mostly deserted throughout the Ottoman occupation of Greece.

Piraeus is one of the oldest ports in the Mediterranean. It reached its zenith in the fifth century BC as a port of Athens and main shopping center of the known world. Today it is the first port in Europe in passenger traffic of up to 20 million annually and the country's main port, providing full services to cruise ships. It is the main port of Athens. Athens and Piraeus have many points of interest in tourism and culture.
The port of Piraeus has two fully equipped passenger terminals, and soon a third terminal with all the services and facilities for passengers, such as: air-conditioned spaces, passenger and baggage control systems, check-in services, free transportation of passengers by bus, application of the security code ISPS, luggage, catering, souvenir shops, free wireless internet, hop on / off buses etc.

The film chronologically progresses from morning to night, showing daily life around Athens and Piraeus.
For those planning on visiting, those who’d like to visit but cannot or those who might be nostalgic and want to re-live their past visits / life there, hopefully this film shall satisfy, time and time again.
Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece with an urban population of over three million.
Athens is recognized as a global city because of its location and its importance in shipping, finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, culture, education and tourism. It is one of the biggest economic centres in southeastern Europe, with a large financial sector, and its port Piraeus is both the largest passenger port in Europe and the second largest in the world.
The dominant feature of Athens's climate is alternation between prolonged hot and dry summers and mild winters with moderate rainfall.
Athens dominates the Attica region and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years. Classical Athens, as a landlocked location was a powerful city-state that emerged in conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus.
A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy.

We sincerely hope this travel guide to Athens, Greece is a good primer and introduction to Greek culture, Greek Food (Greek Cuisine), and numerous attractions and things to do and see in the city. We cover arts, entertainment, museums and architecture we feel is worth exploring. In terms of tourism this travel video attempts to take you to all of the famous sites as well as many of the off-the-beaten-path spots you may have otherwise missed out on.

20 Things to do in Athens Greece Top Attractions Travel Guide Transcript:
Well, good afternoon from sunny Athens. We are currently exploring the Greek capital. We recently actually spent a few days traveling around Meteora and now we're finishing up our trip here in Athens. We've got two full days to explore the city which isn't a lot of time but we're going to try to do our best.
Our first stop was one of the most recognized sights in Athens - the Parthenon, which was dedicated to the goddess Athena who was seen as the patron of Athens.
After sunset we lingered atop Mount Lycabettus for some night views of the city before taking the funicular down to the bottom. Seeing the Acropolis all lit up at night was a pretty cool sight!
Next up we visited the Temple of Zeus which once housed the statue of Zeus, and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
When it comes to shopping, there are a few different options. We made our way to Monastiraki, which is one of the principal shopping districts in Athens. Here we visited both the Flea Market and the antique shops in the area.
The Agora was the central spot in ancient Greek city-states, and it is where people gathered.
So we are wrapping up our time here in Athens. Any surprises or final thoughts to share? Yeah, something that really surprised me were just the amount of stray animals that I saw on the streets.
I also thought there was really good dining options as well. We had a number of really good Greek meals and also some really good International food too.
Final thoughts, I think this is a really underrated capital in Europe. A lot like Warsaw in Poland so if you have an opportunity to visit Athens in Greece definitely do so.
So what did you think of Athens? Well, I thought it was a really cool city and I actually had a great time here. It kind of reminded me a little bit of Tel Aviv with the Mediterranean feel but also Berlin because it is very artsy and gritty. So it's a really cool place to check out. Great food, lots of attractions. You have a mix of antiquity with urban.

The sprawling city is bounded on three sides by Mt Ymettos, Mt Parnitha and Mt Pendeli; whilst inside Athens are twelve hills [the seven historical are: Acropolis, Areopagus, Hill of Philopappus, Observatory Hill (Muses Hill), Pnyx, Lykavittos (Lycabettus), Tourkovounia (Anchesmus)], the Acropolis and Lykavittos being the most prominent. These hills provide a refuge from the noise and commotion of the crowded city streets, offering amazing views down to Saronic Gulf, Athens' boundary with the Aegean Sea on its southern side. The streets of Athens (clearly signposted in Greek and English) now meld imperceptibly into Piraeus, the city's ancient (and still bustling) port.Omega is not considered to be part of the greek alphabet because of its saminess
Places of interest to travellers can be found within a relatively small area surrounding the city centre at Syntagma Square (Plateia Syntagmatos). This epicentre is surrounded by the districts of the Plaka to the south, Monastiraki and Thissio to the west, Kolonaki to the northeast and Omonia to the northwest.

The film chronologically progresses from morning to night, showing daily life around Athens and Piraeus.
For those planning on visiting, those who’d like to visit but cannot or those who might be nostalgic and want to re-live their past visits / life there, hopefully this film shall satisfy, time and time again.
Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece with an urban population of over three million.
Athens is recognized as a global city because of its location and its importance in shipping, finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, culture, education and tourism. It is one of the biggest economic centres in southeastern Europe, with a large financial sector, and its port Piraeus is both the largest passenger port in Europe and the second largest in the world.
The dominant feature of Athens's climate is alternation between prolonged hot and dry summers and mild winters with moderate rainfall.
Athens dominates the Attica region and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years. Classical Athens, as a landlocked location was a powerful city-state that emerged in conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus.
A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy.

The statues, reliefs and frieses of Acropolis Museum and the Archeological Museum of Athens show us the classical beauty ideal and the perfect sense of proportion. The Agora tells us about the life of ancient Athens, while the Plaka with its narrow roads introduces us to a vivid, Eastern bazaar. In front of the parlament, funnily dressed guards give guard of honor. The city can be best seen from the Likavitos mountain, and the sunset is also the most beautiful from here. From Athens we can take a trip to the port of Pireus, to the monument of the battle at Marathon, to the ruins of the sacred area of Eleusis, to the Korinthos canal, and to the sunny holiday resorts of the Attican Riviera.

It towers up above several buildings and on its summit there’s a small chapel. The capital of Greece has a long history. It was founded three thousand five hundred years ago and had its golden age during Greek Antiquity under the democratic rule of Perikles. At that time the symbol of one Europe’s most influential cultures was created, Greek’s national sanctuary, the Acropolis. It took nine years to build the great temple of the goddess Athene, The Parthenon, that was completed in 438 B.C. Unique among all other Greek temples, with its imposing appearance and artistic decoration this temple signified the great influence and power of ancient Athens. With its striking majestic appearance and timeless elegance it was more magnificent than any other building in Greece. Six female figures, the Karyatides, support the southern hall of the Ionic Temple of Erechtheion that stands on sacred ground close to the main temple. Since the beginning of the 4th century the mythical kings Kekrops and Erechtheu were worshiped here until the city’s subsequent decline. Legend has it that during a contest between the gods Poseidon left the imprint of his trident on a rock upon which Athene created an olive tree. Throughout its history the temple served many purposes and the Turks, somewhat disrespectfully, transformed the Erechtheion into a harem. The evening sun descends slowly across the ruins of Ancient Greece. The marble of the temple shines golden as though to thank the gods for creating this remarkable city. A city in which both antiquity and the present unite: a symbol of the Occident.
