Heraklion (/hᵻˈrækliən/, Greek: Ηράκλειο, Irákleio, pronounced [iˈracʎo]) is the largest city and the administrative capital of the island of Crete, Greece. It is one of the largest cities in Greece. According to the results of the 2011 census, the population of the city was 173,993 inhabitants while the Heraklion urban area has a population of 225,574 and it extends over an area of 684.3 km2 (264.2 sq mi).
Heraklion is the capital of Heraklion regional unit.
The Bronze Age palace of Knossos, also known as the Palace of Minos, is located nearby.
The Arab raiders from Andalusia (Iberia) who founded the Emirate of Crete moved the island's capital from Gortyna to a new castle they called ربض الخندق rabḍ al-ḫandaq 'Castle of the Moat' in the 820s. This was hellenized as Χάνδαξ (Khándax) or Χάνδακας (Khándakas) and Latinized as Candia, which was taken into other European languages: in Italian and Latin as Candia, in French as Candie, in English as Candy, all of which could refer to the island of Crete as a whole as well as to the city alone; the Ottoman name was Kandiye.
Crete (Greek: Κρήτη, Kríti ['kriti]; Ancient Greek: Κρήτη, Krḗtē) is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, and the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, and Corsica. Crete and a number of surrounding islands and islets constitute the region of Crete (Greek: Περιφέρεια Κρήτης), one of the 13 top-level administrative units of Greece. The capital and the largest city is Heraklion. As of 2011, the region had a population of 623,065.
Crete forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece, while retaining its own local cultural traits (such as its own poetry and music). It was once the center of the Minoan civilization (c. 2700–1420 BC), which is currently regarded as the earliest recorded civilization in Europe.
The island is first referred to as Kaptara in texts from the Syrian city of Mari dating from the 18th century BC, repeated later in Neo-Assyrian records and the Bible (Caphtor). It was also known in ancient Egyptian as Keftiu, strongly suggesting a similar Minoan name for the island.

Plot: Eons after the Gods won their mythic struggle against the Titans, a new evil threatens the land. Mad with power, King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) has declared war against humanity. Amassing a bloodthirsty army of soldiers disfigured by his own hand, Hyperion has scorched Greece in search of the legendary Epirus Bow, a weapon of unimaginable power forged in the heavens by Ares. Only he who possesses this bow can unleash the Titans, who have been imprisoned deep within the walls of Mount Tartaros since the dawn of time and thirst for revenge. In the king's hands, the bow would rain destruction upon mankind and annihilate the Gods. But ancient law dictates the Gods must not intervene in man's conflict. They remain powerless to stop Hyperion...until a peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill) comes forth as their only hope. Secretly chosen by Zeus, Theseus must save his people from Hyperion and his hordes. Rallying a band of fellow outsiders-including visionary priestess Phaedra (Freida Pinto) and cunning slave Stavros (Stephen Dorff)-one hero will lead the uprising, or watch his homeland fall into ruin and his Gods vanish into legend.

Heraklion is the major city and capital of the largest Greek island of Crete. Its Archaeological Museum holds the remains of the 3000-year old Minoan civilization, which grew around the nearby legendary palace of Knossos, as well as Byzantine churches and a well-preserved Venetian wall and fortress from the 15th century. Heraklion is the capital of Crete and an industrialised city of around 155,000 residents. The modern city is densely populated and traffic chocked, at first overwhelming the visitor. However, in recent years, things have began to change and efforts are being made to bring out the beauty of the city's rich cultural history. Strolling along the coastline, the city Wall, or down a park can reveal various historical remains of potentially immense interest to the watchful eye....
When you can not stand it any more to silently watch the destruction taking place around you, when you make the decision that you will not be a slave of the system but a opponent, when you pass from apathy to attack... Then the cops, the Judges and the Media will talk of you as an terrorists Because that’ is how they call the revolutionary in the language of the lackeys For us they are the terrorists, their institutions, their democracy and their economy. I walk through HERAKLION... Forgotten places - old rundown houses - corners that someone can describe as ugly and dissuasive. But for me these parts make Heraklion to what it is - so beautiful and unique. Elements which seem to be forgotten - but you can't imagine it without them. Travel video about destination Iraklion in Greece. The picturesque harbour of Iraklion welcomes those arriving by ship at Crete's greatest city that is also the fourth largest harbour in Greece. In common with much of the history of this city, the imposing castle located at the harbour dates back to Venetian times and was built between 1523 and 1540. Today the archaeological search for ruins from the time of the ancient Minoers has become increasingly more important. In addition, work on the ruins that date from the earlier history of the town, when it was ruled by Turkey, has also gained momentum. The remains that date back to Venetian rule, such as some sections of the massive town wall and the Loggia, are part of the town's most well preserved buildings. Built between 1626 and 1628, wit...

Travel video about destination Knossos in Greece. Around 7 kilometres southeast of Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete, is the Palace of Knossos, the largest of all the Minoan palaces, located on the picturesque, partly tree-covered Kefala Hill. As parts of the palace have been rebuilt, its former splendour makes a visit to Knossos even more worthwhile. At the beginning of the 20th century, large scale excavations of the former Minoan palace were carried out under the leadership of Englishman, Arthur Evans. In just three years, Evans and his team of archaeologists excavated an area of almost 20,000 square metres. Visitors can move around the newly built areas of the palace and imagine the former life of the Minoans. Almost all of the palace's 1200 rooms and splendid inner courtyards are...
