In my next quest, I'm attempting to make a pair of prescription eyeglasses for myself, starting from their natural sources. With some guidance from Dr. Lewis Dartnell, I collected sand, limestone, and hardwood ashes to melt down into the glass. Then I figured out how to grind the lenses down to the correct curvature to match my prescription. I also made the frames for them out of a tree.

Here is what you'll need!
Apple Pie From Scratch
INGREDIENTS
Pie Dough
2½ cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1½ sticks butter, cold and cut in cubes
4-8 tablespoons ice water
Filling
2½ pounds Granny Smith apples, cored and sliced
¾ cup sugar
2 tablespoons flour
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
½ lemon
1 egg, beaten
1 tablespoon sugar
Vanilla ice cream
PREPARATION
Preheat the oven to 375°F/200°C.
In a medium-sized bowl, add the flour and salt. Mix with fork until combined.
Add in cubed butter and break up into flour with a fork. Mixture will still have lumps about the size of small peas.
Gradually add in ice water and continue to mix until the dough starts to come together. You may not need all of the water, but if the dough is too dry then add more. The dough should not be very tacky or sticky.
Work the dough together with your hands and turn out onto a surface. Work into a ball and cover with cling wrap. Refrigerate.
In a bowl, add the sliced apples, sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon.
Mix until combined and all apples are coated. Refrigerate.
On a floured surface, cut the pie dough in half and roll out both halves until round and about ⅛-inch thick.
Roll the dough around the rolling pin and unroll onto a pie dish making sure the dough reaches all edges. Trim extra if necessary.
Pour in apple filling mixture and pat down.
Roll the other half of the dough on top.
Trim the extra dough from the edges and pinch the edges to create a crimp. Make sure edges are sealed together.
Brush the pie with the beaten egg and sprinkle with the sigar.
Cut four slits in the top of the pie to create a vent.
Bake pie for 50-60 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and no greyish or undercooked pastry remains.
Allow to cool completely before slicing.
Top with ice cream and enjoy!

Thanksgiving dinner
The centerpiece of contemporary Thanksgiving in the United States and Canada is a large meal, generally centered on a large roasted turkey which can only be enjoyed once per year. The majority of the dishes in the traditional American version of Thanksgiving dinner are made from foods native to the New World, as according to tradition the Pilgrims received these food from the Native Americans.
Historical menus
According to what traditionally is known as "The First Thanksgiving," the 1621 feast between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag at Plymouth Colony contained turkey, waterfowl, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, and squash. William Bradford noted that, "besides waterfowl, there was great store of wild turkeys, of which they took many." Many of the foods that were included in the first feast (except, notably, the seafood) have since gone on to become staples of the modern Thanksgiving dinner.
The use of the turkey in the USA for Thanksgiving precedes Lincoln's nationalization of the holiday in 1863. Alexander Hamilton proclaimed that no "Citizen of the United States should refrain from turkey on Thanksgiving Day," and many of the Founding Fathers (particularly Benjamin Franklin) had high regard for the wild turkey as an American icon, but turkey was uncommon as Thanksgiving fare until after 1800. By 1857, turkey had become part of the traditional dinner in New England.

Ice cream float
An ice cream float or soda (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, South Africa and East Asia), coke float (United Kingdom), root beer float (Canada) or spider (Australia and New Zealand), is a beverage that consists of ice cream in either a soft drink or in a mixture of flavored syrup and carbonated water.
Origins
The ice cream float was invented by Robert McCay Green in Philadelphia, PA, in 1874 during the sesquicentennial celebration. The traditional story is that, on a particularly hot day, Mr. Green ran out of cold ice for the flavored drinks he was selling and used vanilla ice cream from a neighboring vendor, thus inventing a new drink.
His own account, published in Soda Fountain magazine in 1910, states that while operating a soda fountain at the Franklin Institute's semicentennial celebration in Philadelphia in 1874, he wanted to create a new treat to attract customers away from another vendor who had a fancier, bigger soda fountain. After some experimenting, he decided to combine ice cream and soda water. During the celebration, he sold vanilla ice cream with soda water and a choice of 16 different flavored syrups. The new treat was a sensation and soon other soda fountains began selling ice cream floats. Green's will instructed that "Originator of the Ice Cream Soda" was to be engraved on his tombstone.

Apple Pie From ScratchApple Pie From Scratch
Here is what you'll need! Apple Pie From Scratch INGREDIENTS Pie Dough 2½ cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 1½ sticks butter, cold and cut in cubes 4-8 tablespoons ice water Filling 2½ pounds Granny Smith apples, cored and sliced ¾ cup sugar 2 tablespoons flour ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon ¼ teaspoon nutmeg ½ lemon 1 egg, beaten 1 tablespoon sugar Vanilla ice cream PREPARATION Preheat the oven to 375°F/200°C. In a medium-sized bowl, add the flour and salt. Mix with fork until combined. Add in cubed butter and break up into flour with a fork. Mixture will still have lumps about the size of small peas. Gradually add in ice water and continue to mix until the dough starts to come together. You may not need all of the water, but if the dough is too dry then add more. The dough should not be very tacky or sticky. Work the dough together with your hands and turn out onto a surface. Work into a ball and cover with cling wrap. Refrigerate. In a bowl, add the sliced apples, sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon. Mix until combined and all apples are coated. Refrigerate. On a floured surface, cut the pie dough in half and roll out both halves until round and about ⅛-inch thick. Roll the dough around the rolling pin and unroll onto a pie dish making sure the dough reaches all edges. Trim extra if necessary. Pour in apple filling mixture and pat down. Roll the other half of the dough on top. Trim the extra dough from the edges and pinch the edges to create a crimp. Make sure edges are sealed together. Brush the pie with the beaten egg and sprinkle with the sigar. Cut four slits in the top of the pie to create a vent. Bake pie for 50-60 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and no greyish or undercooked pastry remains. Allow to cool completely before slicing. Top with ice cream and enjoy! In my next quest, I'm attempting to make a pair of prescription eyeglasses for myself, starting from their natural sources. With some guidance from Dr. Lewis Dartnell, I collected sand, limestone, and hardwood ashes to melt down into the glass. Then I figured out how to grind the lenses down to the correct curvature to match my prescription. I also made the frames for them out of a tree. Here is what you'll need! In my next quest, I'm attempting to make a pair of prescription eyeglasses for myself, starting from their natural sources. With some guidance from Dr. Lewis Dartnell, I collected sand, limestone, and hardwood ashes to melt down into the glass. Then I figured out how to grind the lenses down to the correct curvature to match my prescription. I also made the frames for them out of a tree.

Apple Pie From Scratch
INGREDIENTS
Pie Dough
2½ cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1½ sticks butter, cold and cut in cubes
4-8 tablespoons ice water
Filling
2½ pounds Granny Smith apples, cored and sliced
¾ cup sugar
2 tablespoons flour
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
½ lemon
1 egg, beaten
1 tablespoon sugar
Vanilla ice cream
PREPARATION
Preheat the oven to 375°F/200°C.
In a medium-sized bowl, add the flour and salt. Mix with fork until combined.
Add in cubed butter and break up into flour with a fork. Mixture will still have lumps about the size of small peas.
Gradually add in ice water and continue to mix until the dough starts to come together. You may not need all of the water, but if the dough is too dry then add more. The dough should not be very tacky or sticky.
Work the dough together with your hands and turn out onto a surface. Work into a ball and cover with cling wrap. Refrigerate.
In a bowl, add the sliced apples, sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon.
Mix until combined and all apples are coated. Refrigerate.
On a floured surface, cut the pie dough in half and roll out both halves until round and about ⅛-inch thick.
Roll the dough around the rolling pin and unroll onto a pie dish making sure the dough reaches all edges. Trim extra if necessary.
Pour in apple filling mixture and pat down.
Roll the other half of the dough on top.
Trim the extra dough from the edges and pinch the edges to create a crimp. Make sure edges are sealed together.
Brush the pie with the beaten egg and sprinkle with the sigar.
Cut four slits in the top of the pie to create a vent.
Bake pie for 50-60 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and no greyish or undercooked pastry remains.
Allow to cool completely before slicing.
Top with ice cream and enjoy!
