The health of Greek Premier Andreas Papandreou has taken a turn for the worse.
Papandreou, who is 76, was in hospital Wednesday on a respirator following signs of kidney failure.
Andreas Papandreou, a Harvard-trained economist who dominated Greek politics in the 1980s, rose to power as a fiery Socialist.
Andreas Papandreou was born into politics. His father, Georgios Papandreou, served as prime minister off and on during the 1940s, 50s and 60s.
Born on February 5th, 1919, on the Greek island Khios, Papandreou first became a minister under his centrist father in 1963.
For two decades prior to his political career, he lived in the United States. There he studied economics, became a professor and married Margaret Chant of Elmhurst, Illinois in 1951. They had four children, one girl and three boys, including Education Minister George Papandreou.
Despite his American ties, he renounced his U-S citizenship after America supported the ruling 1967-1974 military junta, and failed to prevent Turkey's 1974 invasion of Cyprus.
When the Greek military seized power and suspended democracy, Papandreou was jailed. He was released after eight months and left for America. In 1974, he returned to enjoy huge popularity.
Seven years later, he was elected Prime Minister. He worked hard to improve relations with the Greek's ancient enemy Turkey.

During these years his health began to fail. In 1988, he underwent open heart surgery in London. At his side, a young blonde named Dmitra (Mimi) Liani. The former Olympic Airways stewardess had become his mistress.
He survived a messy divorce from his wife of 38 years, Margaret, thanks to his political charisma and loyalty from Greek voters.
By 1989, Papandreou married Mimi. She swiftly adapted to political life and many say she influenced her husband.
Criticism mounted however, and he was blamed for squandering funds and leaving a legacy of debt. Papandreou lost his parliamentary majority in the June 1989 elections.
Later that year, he was indicted along with several ministers for allegedly authorising wiretaps and complicity in embezzling 210 (m) million dollars.
Despite his failing health, he held the Socialists together and led the party back to power in 1993.
His final term had been marked with efforts to bring Greece's economy in line with the rest of its European Union partners.
While he made fewer and fewer public appearances, his wife Mimi gained more of the limelight.
Critics charged that the 40-year-old, who had been made Chief of Staff, was manipulating the prime minister. They claimed she was forging ahead with political goals of her own.
Newspapers published nude and compromising photographs of Mimi, hoping to drive her out of her husband's office. But Andreas Papandreou stood by his wife, saying he would support Dmitra in whatever she chose to do.

Thousands of mourners from all over Greece have flocked to Athens to attend the state funeral of Andreas Papandreou, the former Prime Minister.
He died on Sunday of a heart attack at the age of 77.
Athens ground to a halt as thousands of people gathered to pay their last respects to former socialist Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou at his state funeral.
He died on Sunday of a heart attack at the age of 77.
The mourners came from all over Greece and around the world to attend Greece's first funeral with full state honours since the death of King Paul in 1964.
Andreas Papandreou was an immensely popular former Prime Minister and leader of PASOK, the ruling socialist party in Greece.
The funeral service was conducted by Greece's orthodox Primate Archbishop Serapheim and other senior member of the church.
Dimitra Liani Papandreou, Papandreou's widow arrived and made the sign of the cross.
She was followed by George, Papandreou's son and his ex-wife Margaret Papandreou.
Kurdish representatives in traditional costume carried wreaths towards the Cathedral.
The current Prime Minister, Costas Simitis, arrived soon after.
Philip Gonzalez, former Prime Minister of Spain and socialist comrade of Andreas Papandreou said he felt a moral obligation to be here.

Andreas Georgios Papandreou (Greek: Ανδρέας Γεώργιος Παπανδρέου;Greek pronunciation: [anˈðreas papanˈðreu]; 5 February 1919 – 23 June 1996) was a Greek economist, a socialist politician and a dominant figure in Greek politics. The son of Georgios Papandreou, Andreas was a Harvard-trained academic. He served two terms as prime minister of Greece (21 October 1981 to 2 July 1989; and 13 October 1993 to 22 January 1996).
His assumption of power in 1981 influenced the course of Greek political history, ending an almost 50-year-long system of power dominated by conservative forces. The achievements of his successive governments include the official recognition of the Greek Resistance against the Axis, the establishment of the National Health System and the Supreme Council for Personnel Selection (ASEP), the passage of Law 1264/1982 which secured the right to strike and greatly improved the rights of workers, the constitutional amendment of 1985–1986 which strengthened parliamentarism and reduced the powers of the indirectly-elected president, the conduct of an assertive and independent Greek foreign policy, the expansion in the power of local governments, many progressive reforms in Greek law and the granting of permission to the refugees of the Greek Civil War to return home in Greece. The Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), which he founded and led, was the first non-communist political party in Greek history with a mass-based organization, introducing an unprecedented level of political and social participation in Greek society. In a poll conducted by Kathimerini in 2007, 48% of those polled called Papandreou the "most important Greek Prime Minister". In the same poll, the first four years of Papandreou's government after Metapolitefsi were voted as the best government Greece ever had.

Prime minister
A prime minister is the most senior minister of cabinet in the executive branch of government, often in a parliamentary or semi-presidential system. In many systems, the prime minister selects and may dismiss other members of the cabinet, and allocates posts to members within the government. In most systems, the prime minister is the presiding member and chairman of the cabinet. In a minority of systems, notably in semi-presidential systems of government, a prime minister is the official who is appointed to manage the civil service and execute the directives of the head of state.
In parliamentary systems fashioned after the Westminster system, the prime minister is the presiding and actual head of government and head of the executive branch. In such systems, the head of state or the head of state's official representative (i.e. the monarch, president, or governor-general) usually holds a largely ceremonial position, although often with reserve powers.
The prime minister is often, but not always, a member of parliament and is expected with other ministers to ensure the passage of bills through the legislature. In some monarchies the monarch may also exercise executive powers (known as the royal prerogative) that are constitutionally vested in the crown and may be exercised without the approval of parliament.

Spanish/Greek/Natsound Thousands of mourners from all over Greece have flocked to Athens to attend the state funeral of Andreas Papandreou, the former Prime Minister. He died on Sunday of a heart attack at the age of 77. Athens ground to a halt as thousands of people gathered to pay their last respects to former socialist Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou at his state funeral. He died on Sunday of a heart attack at the age of 77. The mourners came from all over Greece and around the world to attend Greece's first funeral with full state honours since the death of King Paul in 1964. Andreas Papandreou was an immensely popular former Prime Minister and leader of PASOK, the ruling socialist party in Greece. The funeral service was conducted by Greece's orthodox Primate Archbishop Serapheim and other senior member of the church. Dimitra Liani Papandreou, Papandreou's widow arrived and made the sign of the cross. She was followed by George, Papandreou's son and his ex-wife Margaret Papandreou. Kurdish representatives in traditional costume carried wreaths towards the Cathedral. The current Prime Minister, Costas Simitis, arrived soon after. Philip Gonzalez, former Prime Minister of Spain and socialist comrade of Andreas Papandreou said he felt a moral obligation to be here. We had a long friendship and we shared the same passion for freedom and politics." Born on February 5th, 1919, on the Greek island Khios, Papandreou first became a minister under his centrist father in 1963.
For two decades prior to his political career, he lived in the United States. There he studied economics, became a professor and married Margaret Chant of Elmhurst, Illinois in 1951. They had four children, one girl and three boys, including Education Minister George Papandreou.
Despite his American ties, he renounced his U-S citizenship after America supported the ruling 1967-1974 military junta, and failed to prevent Turkey's 1974 invasion of Cyprus.
When the Greek military seized power and suspended democracy, Papandreou was jailed. He was released after eight months and left for America. In 1974, he returned to enjoy huge popularity.
Seven years later, he was elected Prime Minister. He worked hard to improve relations with the Greek's ancient enemy Turkey.

"From now on we'll follow a policy of peace. Nothing can be achieved by war, a war that could cause not only the death of both countries but affect the wider Europe also. Turkish Prime Minister Turkut Ozal and I, both keep the same position and do our best to make it real."

During these years his health began to fail. In 1988, he underwent open heart surgery in London. At his side, a young blonde named Dmitra (Mimi) Liani. The former Olympic Airways stewardess had become his mistress.
He survived a messy divorce from his wife of 38 years, Margaret, thanks to his political charisma and loyalty from Greek voters.
By 1989, Papandreou married Mimi. She swiftly adapted to political life and many say she influenced her husband.
Criticism mounted however, and he was blamed for squandering funds and leaving a legacy of debt. Papandreou lost his parliamentary majority in the June 1989 elections.
Later that year, he was indicted along with several ministers for allegedly authorising wiretaps and complicity in embezzling 210 (m) million dollars.
Despite his failing health, he held the Socialists together and led the party back to power in 1993.
His final term had been marked with efforts to bring Greece's economy in line with the rest of its European Union partners.
While he made fewer and fewer public appearances, his wife Mimi gained more of the limelight.
Critics charged that the 40-year-old, who had been made Chief of Staff, was manipulating the prime minister. They claimed she was forging ahead with political goals of her own.
Newspapers published nude and compromising photographs of Mimi, hoping to drive her out of her husband's office. But Andreas Papandreou stood by his wife, saying he would support Dmitra in whatever she chose to do.

Thousands of mourners from all over Greece have flocked to Athens to attend the state funeral of Andreas Papandreou, the former Prime Minister.
He died on Sunday of a heart attack at the age of 77.
Athens ground to a halt as thousands of people gathered to pay their last respects to former socialist Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou at his state funeral.
He died on Sunday of a heart attack at the age of 77.
The mourners came from all over Greece and around the world to attend Greece's first funeral with full state honours since the death of King Paul in 1964.
Andreas Papandreou was an immensely popular former Prime Minister and leader of PASOK, the ruling socialist party in Greece.
The funeral service was conducted by Greece's orthodox Primate Archbishop Serapheim and other senior member of the church.
Dimitra Liani Papandreou, Papandreou's widow arrived and made the sign of the cross.
She was followed by George, Papandreou's son and his ex-wife Margaret Papandreou.
Kurdish representatives in traditional costume carried wreaths towards the Cathedral.
The current Prime Minister, Costas Simitis, arrived soon after.
Philip Gonzalez, former Prime Minister of Spain and socialist comrade of Andreas Papandreou said he felt a moral obligation to be here.

Andreas Papandreou was active in fighting a right-wing military junta in Greece from 1967 to 1974.
He founded the resistance group that later became the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, or PASOK, that he founded in 1974.
Papandreou led PASOK to electoral victory in 1981, becoming Greece's first socialist Prime Minister.
Costas Simitis the current Prime Minister and PASOK member spoke at his funeral.

Andreas Papandreou, a Harvard-trained economist who dominated Greek politics in the 1980s, rose to power as a fiery Socialist.
Andreas Papandreou was born into politics. His father, Georgios Papandreou, served as prime minister off and on during the 1940s, 50s and 60s.
Born on February 5th, 1919, on the Greek island Khios, Papandreou first became a minister under his centrist father in 1963.
For two decades prior to his political career, he lived in the United States. There he studied economics, became a professor and married Margaret Chant of Elmhurst, Illinois in 1951. They had four children, one girl and three boys, including Education Minister George Papandreou.
Despite his American ties, he renounced his U-S citizenship after America supported the ruling 1967-1974 military junta, and failed to prevent Turkey's 1974 invasion of Cyprus.
When the Greek military seized power and suspended democracy, Papandreou was jailed. He was released after eight months and left for America. In 1974, he returned to enjoy huge popularity.
Seven years later, he was elected Prime Minister. He worked hard to improve relations with the Greek's ancient enemy Turkey.

The health of Greek Premier Andreas Papandreou has taken a turn for the worse.
Papandreou, who is 76, was in hospital Wednesday on a respirator following signs of kidney failure.
Andreas Papandreou, a Harvard-trained economist who dominated Greek politics in the 1980s, rose to power as a fiery Socialist.
Andreas Papandreou was born into politics. His father, Georgios Papandreou, served as prime minister off and on during the 1940s, 50s and 60s.
Born on February 5th, 1919, on the Greek island Khios, Papandreou first became a minister under his centrist father in 1963.
For two decades prior to his political career, he lived in the United States. There he studied economics, became a professor and married Margaret Chant of Elmhurst, Illinois in 1951. They had four children, one girl and three boys, including Education Minister George Papandreou.
Despite his American ties, he renounced his U-S citizenship after America supported the ruling 1967-1974 military junta, and failed to prevent Turkey's 1974 invasion of Cyprus.
When the Greek military seized power and suspended democracy, Papandreou was jailed. He was released after eight months and left for America. In 1974, he returned to enjoy huge popularity.
Seven years later, he was elected Prime Minister. He worked hard to improve relations with the Greek's ancient enemy Turkey.

Born on February 5th, 1919, on the Greek island Khios, Papandreou first became a minister under his centrist father in 1963.
For two decades prior to his political career, he lived in the United States. There he studied economics, became a professor and married Margaret Chant of Elmhurst, Illinois in 1951. They had four children, one girl and three boys, including Education Minister George Papandreou.
Despite his American ties, he renounced his U-S citizenship after America supported the ruling 1967-1974 military junta, and failed to prevent Turkey's 1974 invasion of Cyprus.
When the Greek military seized power and suspended democracy, Papandreou was jailed. He was released after eight months and left for America. In 1974, he returned to enjoy huge popularity.
Seven years later, he was elected Prime Minister. He worked hard to improve relations with the Greek's ancient enemy Turkey.

"From now on we'll follow a policy of peace. Nothing can be achieved by war, a war that could cause not only the death of both countries but affect the wider Europe also. Turkish Prime Minister Turkut Ozal and I, both keep the same position and do our best to make it real."

During these years his health began to fail. In 1988, he underwent open heart surgery in London. At his side, a young blonde named Dmitra (Mimi) Liani. The former Olympic Airways stewardess had become his mistress.
He survived a messy divorce from his wife of 38 years, Margaret, thanks to his political charisma and loyalty from Greek voters.
By 1989, Papandreou married Mimi. She swiftly adapted to political life and many say she influenced her husband.
Criticism mounted however, and he was blamed for squandering funds and leaving a legacy of debt. Papandreou lost his parliamentary majority in the June 1989 elections.
Later that year, he was indicted along with several ministers for allegedly authorising wiretaps and complicity in embezzling 210 (m) million dollars.
Despite his failing health, he held the Socialists together and led the party back to power in 1993.
His final term had been marked with efforts to bring Greece's economy in line with the rest of its European Union partners.
While he made fewer and fewer public appearances, his wife Mimi gained more of the limelight.
Critics charged that the 40-year-old, who had been made Chief of Staff, was manipulating the prime minister. They claimed she was forging ahead with political goals of her own.
Newspapers published nude and compromising photographs of Mimi, hoping to drive her out of her husband's office. But Andreas Papandreou stood by his wife, saying he would support Dmitra in whatever she chose to do.

Thousands of mourners from all over Greece have flocked to Athens to attend the state funeral of Andreas Papandreou, the former Prime Minister.
He died on Sunday of a heart attack at the age of 77.
Athens ground to a halt as thousands of people gathered to pay their last respects to former socialist Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou at his state funeral.
He died on Sunday of a heart attack at the age of 77.
The mourners came from all over Greece and around the world to attend Greece's first funeral with full state honours since the death of King Paul in 1964.
Andreas Papandreou was an immensely popular former Prime Minister and leader of PASOK, the ruling socialist party in Greece.
The funeral service was conducted by Greece's orthodox Primate Archbishop Serapheim and other senior member of the church.
Dimitra Liani Papandreou, Papandreou's widow arrived and made the sign of the cross.
She was followed by George, Papandreou's son and his ex-wife Margaret Papandreou.
Kurdish representatives in traditional costume carried wreaths towards the Cathedral.
The current Prime Minister, Costas Simitis, arrived soon after.
Philip Gonzalez, former Prime Minister of Spain and socialist comrade of Andreas Papandreou said he felt a moral obligation to be here.

"Well I felt morally obliged to be here at this time to accompany Andreas Papandreou during his last day. We had a long friendship and we shared the same passion for freedom and politics."

Andreas Papandreou was active in fighting a right-wing military junta in Greece from 1967 to 1974.
He founded the resistance group that later became the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, or PASOK, that he founded in 1974.
Papandreou led PASOK to electoral victory in 1981, becoming Greece's first socialist Prime Minister.
Costas Simitis the current Prime Minister and PASOK member spoke at his funeral.

Georgios Andreas Papandreou (Greek: Γεώργιος Ανδρέας Παπανδρέου; born 16 June 1952), commonly anglicised to George, served as Prime Minister of Greece from 2009 to 2011.
Belonging to a political dynasty of long standing, he served under his father, then-prime minister Andreas Papandreou as Minister for National Education and Religious Affairs (1988–1989 and 1994–1996) and Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1999 to 2004. Papandreou was leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) party from February 2004 until March 2012, and President of the Socialist International since January 2006.
On 6 October 2009, George Papandreou became the 182nd Prime Minister of Greece. Following his grandfather Georgios Papandreou and his father Andreas Papandreou, he was the third member of the Papandreou family to serve as the country's prime minister. He resigned on 11 November 2011 during the Greek government debt crisis to make way for a national unity government.
