Voice of Greece

The Voice of Greece (Greek: Η Φωνή της Ελλάδας), also known as ERA 5, is the international service of Greek state radio on shortwave and via satellite and the internet. On 11 June 2013, the Greek government announced the closure of the state broadcaster ERT from 12 June 2013 as an austerity measure.

As of 24 June 2013, The Voice of Greece from ertopen was broadcasting intermittently again on shortwave on 9420 kHz, 7450, 7475 kHz, but the live online streaming internet transmission had not resumed. A live internet broadcast stream began operating again in mid-2015 at the link below.

History

The first state radio of Greece the "Athens Radio" was inaugurated in spring 1938 with a 15 kW transmitter at Liosia suburb and studios of the Zappeion Mansion.

The first attempt for establishing a short wave radio station took place immediately after the Greek-Italian war broke out in October, 1940. Athens Radio programmes were transmitted from a small transmitter in the centre of Athens to the front and the Balkans. A special Short Wave programme was created after the German-Italian occupation in 1947: transmissions began from a 7.5 kW transmitter to Cyprus, Egypt, Turkey, the Balkans and the Soviet Union, while four transmissions were made to Greek navigators.

Greece (ⁱ/ɡriːs/ GREESS; Greek: Ελλάδα, Elláda [eˈlaða]), officially the Hellenic Republic (Greek: Ελληνική Δημοκρατία, Ellīnikī́ Dīmokratía [eliniˈci ðimokraˈti.a]) and known since ancient times as Hellas (/ˈhɛləs/; Greek: Ελλάς, Ellás), is a country located in southeastern Europe. According to the 2011 census, Greece's population is around 10.8 million. Athens is the nation's capital and largest city, followed by Thessaloniki, which is commonly referred to as the co-capital.

Greece is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Situated on the southern tip of the Balkan peninsula, it shares land borders with Albania to the northwest, the Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north and Turkey to the northeast. Greece consists of nine geographic regions: Macedonia, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, Thessaly, Epirus, the Aegean Islands (including the Dodecanese and Cyclades), Thrace, Crete, and the Ionian Islands. The Aegean Sea lies to the east of the mainland, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Greece has the longest coastline on the Mediterranean Basin and the 11th longest coastline in the world at 13,676 km (8,498 mi) in length, featuring a vast number of islands, of which 227 are inhabited. Eighty percent of Greece is mountainous, with Mount Olympus being the highest peak at 2,918 metres (9,573 ft).

The Voice of Greece

The Voice of Greece is a Greek television talent show with its first season premiering on January 10, 2014 on ANT1 (Cyprus and Greece). Based on the reality singing competition The Voice of Holland, the series was created by Dutch television producer John de Mol. It is part of an international series. The coaches of the show are currently Michalis Kouinelis, Despina Vandi, Antonis Remos and Melina Aslanidou. Giorgos Liagkas is hosting the show while Themis Georgantas is the backstage and social networking corresponding usually referred as the "V Reporter".

There are four different stages to the show: producers' auditions, blind auditions, battle phase and live shows. Producers' auditions take place in Athens and Thesalloniki in Greece and in Nicosia in Cyprus. The rest stages are taking place in the Kapa Studios, in Spata, Attica.

Maria Elena Kiriakou is currently the only winner produced by the series. The show has been renewed for a second season that will premiere during the 2014–2015 season along with a kids version of the show.

Human voice

The human voice consists of sound made by a human being using the vocal folds for talking, singing, laughing, crying, screaming etc. The human voice is specifically a part of human sound production in which the vocal folds (vocal cords) are the primary sound source. Generally speaking, the mechanism for generating the human voice can be subdivided into three parts; the lungs, the vocal folds within the larynx, and the articulators. The lung (the pump) must produce adequate airflow and air pressure to vibrate vocal folds (this air pressure is the fuel of the voice). The vocal folds (vocal cords) are a vibrating valve that chops up the airflow from the lungs into audible pulses that form the laryngeal sound source. The muscles of the larynx adjust the length and tension of the vocal folds to ‘fine-tune’ pitch and tone. The articulators (the parts of the vocal tract above the larynx consisting of tongue, palate, cheek, lips, etc.) articulate and filter the sound emanating from the larynx and to some degree can interact with the laryngeal airflow to strengthen it or weaken it as a sound source.
