A trireme (from Latin triremis, literally "three-oarer") was a type of galley, a Hellenistic-era warship that was used by the ancient maritime civilizations of the Mediterranean, especially the Phoenicians, ancient Greeks and Romans.
The trireme derives its name from its three rows of oars on each side, manned with one man per oar. The early trireme was a development of the penteconter, an ancient warship with a single row of 25 oars on each side, and of the bireme (Greek: διήρης), a warship with two banks of oars, probably of Phoenician origin. As a ship it was fast and agile, and became the dominant warship in the Mediterranean from the 7th to the 4th century BC, when they were largely superseded by the larger quadriremes and quinqueremes. Triremes played a vital role in the Persian Wars, the creation of the Athenian maritime empire, and its downfall in the Peloponnesian War.

Corinth Canal

The Corinth Canal (Greek: Διώρυγα της Κορίνθου, Dhioryga tis Korinthou) is a canal that connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, thus effectively making the former peninsula an island. The builders dug the canal through the Isthmus at sea level; no locks are employed. It is 6.4 kilometres (4 mi) in length and only 21.4 metres (70 ft) wide at its base, making it impassable for most modern ships. It now has little economic importance.
The canal was mooted in classical times and an abortive effort was made to build it in the 1st century AD. Construction finally got under way in 1881 but was hampered by geological and financial problems that bankrupted the original builders. It was completed in 1893 but, due to the canal's narrowness, navigational problems and periodic closures to repair landslides from its steep walls, it failed to attract the level of traffic expected by its operators. It is now used mainly for tourist traffic.

This video shows you that Indian Ships In Greece On Three-Day Visit.
As part of the Indian Navy’s Overseas Deployment (OSD) to the Mediterranean Sea and the West Coast of Africa, four ships of the Indian Navy ~ Mumbai, Trishul, Tarkash and Aditya ~ arrived at Souda Bay, Greece, for a three-day visit since Monday.
They will engage with the Hellenic Navy during their stay in the country. Apart from professional interactions, a number of sports and social engagements are planned, which would go a long way in enhancing cooperation and understanding between the two navies.
The visiting ships are part of the Indian Navy’s Western Naval Command and are based in Mumbai. The Task Group is headed by Rear Admiral RB Pandit, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, who is flying his flag on the indigenous guided m!ssile destroyer, INS Mumbai.
The current visit seeks to underscore India’s peaceful presence and solidarity with friendly and like-minded countries tow@rds ensuring good order in the maritime domain and to strengthen the existing bonds between India and Greece.

To all the meanies who commented on my last video about the poor camera work, I am sorry. But I tried to get this uploaded asap so you could see it almost immediately. This one has some more footage and I tried to cut out the shaking or slow down the speed to reduce the shaking. Ok, I suck, I know and I zoom too much, I know that too -- just chill out. Next time a boat sinks I will take more care to be still.
I added music again so that the video doesnt seem too boring because it is a little long. This song is by a girl named Ralia (Greek Singer) and the some is Called (Ego gia Sena). I dont know who did the song on the other video I posted.
The ship started to list in fira after hitting some volcanic reef in the old port. Then they dragged it here to my work (Volcano View Vip Villas www.volcanoviewvillas.com) so that they could wash it up by the beach, but that didnt work (maybe on purpose) and it sank around 7 am

Hellenic Navy
The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).
The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons.
The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been translated as "The rule of the sea is a great matter" The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem.

A ship is a large buoyant watercraft. Ships are generally distinguished from boats based on size, shape and cargo or passenger capacity. Ships are used on lakes, seas,rivers,and oceans for a variety of activities, such as the transport of people or goods, fishing, entertainment, public safety, and warfare. Historically, a "ship" was a sailing vessel with at least three square-rigged masts and a full bowsprit.
In armed conflict and in daily life, ships have become an integral part of modern commercial and military systems. Fishing boats are used by millions of fishermen throughout the world. Military forces operate vessels for naval warfare and to transport and support forces ashore. Commercial vessels, nearly 35,000 in number, carried 7.4 billion tons of cargo in 2007. As of 2011, there are about 104,304 ships with IMO numbers in the world.
Ships were always a key in history's great explorations and scientific and technological development. Navigators such as Zheng He spread such inventions as the compass and gunpowder. Ships have been used for such purposes as colonization and the slave trade, and have served scientific, cultural, and humanitarian needs. After the 16th century, new crops that had come from and to the Americas via the European seafarers significantly contributed to the world population growth.Ship transport has shaped the world's economy into today's energy-intensive pattern.

Aegean Sea
The Aegean Sea (/ᵻˈdʒiːən/; Greek: Αιγαίο Πέλαγος [eˈʝeo ˈpelaɣos]; Turkish: Ege Denizi Turkish pronunciation: [e̞ɟe̞ de̞n̪iz̪i]) is an elongated embayment of the Mediterranean Sea located between the Greek and Anatolian peninsulas, i.e., between the mainlands of Greece and Turkey. In the north, it is connected to the Marmara Sea and Black Sea by the Dardanelles and Bosporus. The Aegean Islands are within the sea and some bound it on its southern periphery, including Crete and Rhodes.
The sea was traditionally known as Archipelago (in Greek, Αρχιπέλαγος, meaning "chief sea"), but in English this word's meaning has changed to refer to the Aegean Islands and, generally, to any island group.
Etymology
In ancient times, there were various explanations for the name Aegean. It was said to have been named after the Greek town of Aegae, or after Aegea, a queen of the Amazons who died in the sea, or Aigaion, the "sea goat", another name of Briareus, one of the archaic Hecatonchires, or, especially among the Athenians, Aegeus, the father of Theseus, who drowned himself in the sea when he thought his son had died.

To all the meanies who commented on my last video about the poor camera work, I am sorry. But I tried to get this uploaded asap so you could see it almost immediately. This one has some more footage and I tried to cut out the shaking or slow down the speed to reduce the shaking. Ok, I suck, I know and I zoom too much, I know that too -- just chill out. Next time a boat sinks I will take more care to be still.
I added music again so that the video doesnt seem too boring because it is a little long. This song is by a girl named Ralia (Greek Singer) and the some is Called (Ego gia Sena). I dont know who did the song on the other video I posted.
The ship started to list in fira after hitting some volcanic reef in the old port. Then they dragged it here to my work (Volcano View Vip Villas www.volcanoviewvillas.com) so that they could wash it up by the beach, but that didnt work (maybe on purpose) and it sank around 7 am

The troops are part of a 6-thousand strong multinational force charged with securing aid for the poor and hungry.
The Greek boat Samos carrying 130 men and 34 vehicles sailed into port in Durres Friday.
The troops -- part of the 6-thousand-strong multinational force are destined for Fier, 20 miles north of Vlora.
They will set up base there before meeting up with the Italian contingent in Vlora next week.
The multinational force is charged with protecting aid shipments to this impoverished country.
Further Italian forces arrived aboard the Moby Dick, the ship carried 300 men and some 80-plus trucks.
There is widespread support for the presence of an international force here.
One rebel leader in Vlora told about 2,000 supporters that rebel committees should work with the foreign troops and give them "a dignified welcome."
On Thursday, Albania's parties agreed to hold parliamentary elections on June 29.
But former Austrian Chancellor Franz Vranitzky, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe's envoy for Albania, said there was still no consensus on how to treat the rebels.
The election is intended to bring some stability to Albania, which is sharply divided between an insurgent south and a north that largely backs President Sali Berisha.
Vranitzky insists that rebels who support democracy - as opposed to bandit gangs who use their guns to rob and kill - should be brought into Albania's mainstream.
Nearly 400 people have been killed and more than 3-thousand injured since investment funds started to fail in January.
Anger over the get-rich-quick schemes boiled into a revolt against Berisha, who is widely blamed for allowing the schemes to continue.
Berisha however has denied any wrongdoing and remains in the capital, Tirana.

What started as a pejorative label used by neoconservatives, mainly from English speaking countries, was eventually taken up for some time without any qualms by the media. We sincerely hope this travel guide to Athens, Greece is a good primer and introduction to Greek culture, Greek Food (Greek Cuisine), and numerous attractions and things to do and see in the city. We cover arts, entertainment, museums and architecture we feel is worth exploring. Well, good afternoon from sunny Athens. We are currently exploring the Greek capital. We recently actually spent a few days traveling around Meteora and now we're finishing up our trip here in Athens. We've got two full days to explore the city which isn't a lot of time but we're going to try to do our best.
Our first stop was one of the most recognized sights in Athens - the Parthenon, which was dedicated to the goddess Athena who was seen as the patron of Athens.
After sunset we lingered atop Mount Lycabettus for some night views of the city before taking the funicular down to the bottom. Seeing the Acropolis all lit up at night was a pretty cool sight!
Next up we visited the Temple of Zeus which once housed the statue of Zeus, and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
When it comes to shopping, there are a few different options. We made our way to Monastiraki, which is one of the principal shopping districts in Athens. Here we visited both the Flea Market and the antique shops in the area.
The Agora was the central spot in ancient Greek city-states, and it is where people gathered.
So we are wrapping up our time here in Athens. Any surprises or final thoughts to share? Yeah, something that really surprised me were just the amount of stray animals that I saw on the streets.
I also thought there was really good dining options as well. We had a number of really good Greek meals and also some really good International food too.
Final thoughts, I think this is a really underrated capital in Europe. A lot like Warsaw in Poland so if you have an opportunity to visit Athens in Greece definitely do so.
So what did you think of Athens? Well, I thought it was a really cool city and I actually had a great time here. It kind of reminded me a little bit of Tel Aviv with the Mediterranean feel but also Berlin because it is very artsy and gritty. So it's a really cool place to check out. Great food, lots of attractions. You have a mix of antiquity with urban.

How To Conquer Greece Without Launching 1000 Ships
1. Learning to Love a Malaka
Although the word Malaka isn’t “nice” sometimes it’s meant to be friendly. Malaka means “jerkoff” but in Greece we use it as a term of endearment. People might say, “Hey jerkoff,” but don’t worry. You’ll be able to tell if they mean it by their tone of voice. Use your better judgment and go with the flow.
2. Most everything closes at noon for a few hours. No soup for you.
In Spain its called “siesta” and they have it in Greece too. In some of the more touristy areas you’ll find everything stays open but if your visit takes you off the beaten path they will most likely be closed in the afternoon. Make sure you make that trip to the market and get your errands done in the morning and spend your “siesta” down at the beach.
3. Dramamine Taxis
Greece has over 6,000 islands but only 250 of them are inhabited. Although some of the islands have airports most don’t and you’ll have to take a ferry to visit them. Ferries will range in cost from 10 to 75 EUR with travel out of Athens being more expensive. Airfare will range between 100 – 300 EUR depending on where you’re visiting, what time of year it is, and possibly how much you slip the guy booking your tickets.
4. Avoid Mykonos if you’re on a budget.
The clubs stay open till the morning, the beaches are gorgeous, and the bar is always pumping out music. Along with the great nightlife and romantic scenery comes a very hefty price point. Mykonos is not the island to visit if you’re on a budget. Drinks on this island are just as overpriced as they are in New York City, 12 -15 EUR a pop. Dinner will run you at least 50 EUR and hotel rooms start at around $250 EUR a night. One of your suitcases should probably just be filled with cash.
5. Hypochondriacs rejoice! Antibiotics can be purchased over the counter.
If you’re like my mom you’ll want to stock up on over the counter antibiotics while you’re in Greece. You don’t need a prescription in Greece to buy them and they’re stronger then the stuff the pharmacist gives you here (America for me, I’m not sure where in the world you are). I would like to say that you shouldn’t take medicine if you don’t need it. Antibiotics should only be taken if you have an infection so please consult with your doctor before self medicating. And for the love of all that is holy take the entire cycle even if you start to feel better, finish the cycle! Otherwise we’re just building antibacterial resistant superbugs that are going to wipe us all out. But no, really, enjoy your trip.
6. Food in Greece is amazing on any budget
Greece is known for its seafood, olives, honey, feta cheese, and healthy veggies. Even if you’re traveling on a budget and can’t afford to eat at restaurants (which usually run anywhere between 15 – 50 EUR a meal) you can grab Gyro and Suvlaki on the street. They’ll usually run 2 – 3 EUR each and they’re just as filling. Vegetarians: just learn to pronounce the word “spanakopita” before you leave and the cheese and spinach pies will get you right at about the same price point.
7. No one in Greece tips. But if you do you will be treated like a god (lowercase god that is).
In general people do not tip in Greece as wait staff gets paid a living wage, but they will treat you like a king if you do. At the beach bar I usually give them 3 to 5 euros throughout the day and they make sure my drink is always full. A EUR or two goes a long way. If you’re looking for hospitality in Greece, throw in a smile and you are golden.
8. Visit before or after the peak season
End of summer in Greece (end of July to end of August) is very expensive. During that time in Greece the tourists outnumber the citizens! Because of this prices on hotel accommodations, flights, and ferries are inflated. Visiting before or after peak season can save you a lot of money. Consider visiting in June or September so you can still enjoy the beach.

10. Find the Bouzoukia for the real Greek night life experience.
Most of Greece’s nightlife is now very mainstream. The Bouzoukia is where you will experience live Greek music, dancing, and flower throwing. There is usually a headliner like Anna Vissi (think the Greek equivalent to Madonna) if you are in Athens but you can find a cheap alternative in some of the smaller towns and islands with unknown singers.

Greece has over 6,000 islands but only 250 of them are inhabited. Although some of the islands have airports most don’t and you’ll have to take a ferry to visit them. Ferries will range in cost from 10 to 75 EUR with travel out of Athens being more expensive. Airfare will range between 100 – 300 EUR depending on where you’re visiting, what time of year it is, and possibly how much you slip the guy booking your tickets.
4. Avoid Mykonos if you’re on a budget.
The clubs stay open till the morning, the beaches are gorgeous, and the bar is always pumping out music. Along with the great nightlife and romantic scenery comes a very hefty price point. Mykonos is not the island to visit if you’re on a budget. Drinks on this island are just as overpriced as they are in New York City, 12 -15 EUR a pop. Dinner will run you at least 50 EUR and hotel rooms start at around $250 EUR a night. One of your suitcases should probably just be filled with cash.
5. Hypochondriacs rejoice! Antibiotics can be purchased over the counter.
If you’re like my mom you’ll want to stock up on over the counter antibiotics while you’re in Greece. You don’t need a prescription in Greece to buy them and they’re stronger then the stuff the pharmacist gives you here (America for me, I’m not sure where in the world you are). I would like to say that you shouldn’t take medicine if you don’t need it. Antibiotics should only be taken if you have an infection so please consult with your doctor before self medicating. And for the love of all that is holy take the entire cycle even if you start to feel better, finish the cycle! Otherwise we’re just building antibacterial resistant superbugs that are going to wipe us all out. But no, really, enjoy your trip.
6. Food in Greece is amazing on any budget
Greece is known for its seafood, olives, honey, feta cheese, and healthy veggies. Even if you’re traveling on a budget and can’t afford to eat at restaurants (which usually run anywhere between 15 – 50 EUR a meal) you can grab Gyro and Suvlaki on the street. They’ll usually run 2 – 3 EUR each and they’re just as filling. Vegetarians: just learn to pronounce the word “spanakopita” before you leave and the cheese and spinach pies will get you right at about the same price point.
7. No one in Greece tips. But if you do you will be treated like a god (lowercase god that is).
In general people do not tip in Greece as wait staff gets paid a living wage, but they will treat you like a king if you do. At the beach bar I usually give them 3 to 5 euros throughout the day and they make sure my drink is always full. A EUR or two goes a long way. If you’re looking for hospitality in Greece, throw in a smile and you are golden.
8. Visit before or after the peak season
End of summer in Greece (end of July to end of August) is very expensive. During that time in Greece the tourists outnumber the citizens! Because of this prices on hotel accommodations, flights, and ferries are inflated. Visiting before or after peak season can save you a lot of money. Consider visiting in June or September so you can still enjoy the beach.

10. Find the Bouzoukia for the real Greek night life experience.
Most of Greece’s nightlife is now very mainstream. The Bouzoukia is where you will experience live Greek music, dancing, and flower throwing. There is usually a headliner like Anna Vissi (think the Greek equivalent to Madonna) if you are in Athens but you can find a cheap alternative in some of the smaller towns and islands with unknown singers.

For centuries this picturesque former pirate village in the middle of Cyclades group of islands has been the meeting place for artists, V.I.P.’s and the international glitterati. The Cyclades are also known as The Pearls Of Greece and it seems as though the gods have scattered a handful of beautiful pearls into the deep blue Aegean Sea. In ancient times they were also known as The Islands Of Light because Apollo, the God of Light and Learning, was born here and also worshipped on the islands. Santorini is the most southerly of the Cyclades Islands and the legendary location of the mythical lost island of Atlantis and also a breathtaking island paradise of rock, lava, sea and light.Crete is the ‘Island Of Light’ and the birthplace of Zeus. PIGS is a term coined by the business and financial press as a way to refer to Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain during their current financial plight.
What started as a pejorative label used by neoconservatives, mainly from English speaking countries, was eventually taken up for some time without any qualms by the media.
Excessively high levels of public and private debt, government deficits, a property bubble and, generally speaking, very disappointing political and economic policies, have put the PIGS in the crosshairs. It is alleged that the PIGS won’t be able to bear the pressure of sharing a common currency with their stronger European brethren. In this analysis, the forced exit of at least some of the PIGS from the Euro would lead soon to the demise of the European currency.
Yet, how much truth is there to this?
I have attempted to illustrate the stereotypes brought up by the term PIGS. In other words, what we would see if we were to translate into images the articles we read in the financial press. This is how I imagine economists see us.
The result is a collection of clichés, both true and incomplete. The same way a travel guide carefully avoids anything seemingly unattractive, this book shows much of what we find embarrassing, oftentimes rightly, and at times unfairly. Either way, it’s just an artifice with which to highlight a specific aspect of life in the PIGS. In the end, what stands out the most is the glaring absence in these images of all that is positive, beautiful and promising in our countries – and that still endures.

During the Easter Holidays, the Classics and RP departments joined together for their quadrennial trip to Greece. Led by an enthusiastic team consisting of Mrs ...
During the Easter Holidays, the Classics and RP departments joined together for their quadrennial trip to Greece. Led by an enthusiastic team consisting of Mrs Steven, Mme Holdsworth, Mr Jones and Mr Verry, thirty boys spanning Years 7-Sixth Form departed from QEH at 4am on a Saturday morning. After a hectic day of travel and a well-earned rest, we were introduced to our erudite tour guide, Maria, who would accompany us around the most famous landmarks of Mainland Greece and The Peloponnese.
Over the next six days, we visited a vast number of sights including The Oracle at Delphi, the home of the Olympic Games at Olympia, the incredible theatre at Epidaurus (you can whisper in the orchestra and be heard by the entire crowd), the dramatic Corinth canal, the Acropolis of Athens, several archaeological museums and a pottery workshop where we made ancient-style dolls. On top of all this, we had free time to explore Delphi, Tolon and Olympia by night and to take part in mind-bending quizzes organised by the teachers. Greece is known for its food, and we had the chance to try some amazing fresh fish and local delicacies such as baklava.
The trip was a tremendous success and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

A trireme (from Latin triremis, literally "three-oarer") was a type of galley, a Hellenistic-era warship that was used by the ancient maritime civilizations of the Mediterranean, especially the Phoenicians, ancient Greeks and Romans. This video shows you that Indian Ships In Greece On Three-Day Visit.
As part of the Indian Navy’s Overseas Deployment (OSD) to the Mediterranean Sea and the West Coast of Africa, four ships of the Indian Navy ~ Mumbai, Trishul, Tarkash and Aditya ~ arrived at Souda Bay, Greece, for a three-day visit since Monday.
They will engage with the Hellenic Navy during their stay in the country. Apart from professional interactions, a number of sports and social engagements are planned, which would go a long way in enhancing cooperation and understanding between the two navies.
The visiting ships are part of the Indian Navy’s Western Naval Command and are based in Mumbai. The Task Group is headed by Rear Admiral RB Pandit, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, who is flying his flag on the indigenous guided m!ssile destroyer, INS Mumbai.
The current visit seeks to underscore India’s peaceful presence and solidarity with friendly and like-minded countries tow@rds ensuring good order in the maritime domain and to strengthen the existing bonds between India and Greece.

To all the meanies who commented on my last video about the poor camera work, I am sorry. But I tried to get this uploaded asap so you could see it almost immediately. This one has some more footage and I tried to cut out the shaking or slow down the speed to reduce the shaking. Ok, I suck, I know and I zoom too much, I know that too -- just chill out. Next time a boat sinks I will take more care to be still.
I added music again so that the video doesnt seem too boring because it is a little long. This song is by a girl named Ralia (Greek Singer) and the some is Called (Ego gia Sena). I dont know who did the song on the other video I posted.
The ship started to list in fira after hitting some volcanic reef in the old port. Then they dragged it here to my work (Volcano View Vip Villas www.volcanoviewvillas.com) so that they could wash it up by the beach, but that didnt work (maybe on purpose) and it sank around 7 am
