There’s news in the complicated wrongful death suit against Jim Carrey filed by his ex-girlfriend’s mother.
On Tuesday, People reported that the actor dropped his request that Brigid Sweetman pay him a $372,000 bond.
Sweetman says Carrey gave her daughter Cathriona White sexually transmitted diseases and prescription drugs that led to her suicide in California in 2015.
According to documents obtained by the U.K. Daily Mail, White contracted herpes and chlamydia in 2013; Carrey reportedly dismissed claims that he gave them to her in a confrontation that ended in their breakup.
Sweetman’s suit — which Carrey has called a “shakedown” — demanded damages, funeral and burial expenses and attorney fees.
Carrey’s motion asked Sweetman to pay the sum he could be entitled to recover if he won the case. But he abandoned it after her lawyers said she couldn’t afford it.
A lawyer for White’s family told The U.K. Telegraph that they wouldn’t settle the case, and wanted Carrey to face justice.
But Ray Boucher, Carrey’s lawyer, said, “There is no attempt to settle,” he said. “Right now we are fighting over the discovery.”
A judge has set the trial date for April 26, 2018.
In addition to Sweetman, White’s estranged husband Mark Burton is also suing the actor.
LUXURY ON MARKET
The times indeed are changing.
Reservations are now being taken for rooms ($400 and up) at the new San Francisco Proper Hotel, opening in August on Seventh and Market streets. (Not what one might call a swanky corner.)
The hotel’s PR team says “the beloved flatiron building” offers “131 rooms and suites; four anticipated indoor-outdoor restaurants including a rooftop bar and lounge; and meeting spaces designed by international tastemaker Kelly Wearstler.” (Designer Wearstler’s website has a foot stool selling for $3,450.)
Proper Hospitality and The Kor Group head up the venture, which they’re calling “the first injection of true luxury lifestyle hospitality into the city in over a decade.”
Folks involved in the development include Kor Group principals Alex Samek and Brian De Lowe; Proper Hospitality president Arash Azarbarzin; Grace Chow, Joshua Katz, Alexis Kagan, Lorenz Maurer and Xavier Bon in corporate; chef Jason Franey; and cocktail consultants Josh Harris and Morgan Schick.
