"All Right Now" is a single by the English rock band Free. The song, released in 1970, hit #2 on the UK singles chart and #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. "All Right Now" originally appeared on the album Fire and Water, which Free recorded on the Island Records label, formed by Chris Blackwell. In 1991, the song was remixed and re-released, reaching #8 on the UK singles chart.
"All Right Now" was a #1 hit in over 20 territories and was recognised by ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) in 1990 for garnering 1,000,000 plus radio plays in the U.S. by late 1989. In 2006, the BMI London awards included a Million Air award for 3 million air plays of All Right Now in the USA.
According to drummer Simon Kirke, "All Right Now" was written by bassist Andy Fraser and singer Paul Rodgers in the Durham Students' Union building, Dunelm House.
One of the engineers during the recordings of "All Right Now" was Roy Thomas Baker, who would later become Queen's producer (he mixed "Killer Queen", "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Don't Stop Me Now" among others).
In the CD Molten Gold - An Anthology, Free drummer Simon Kirke explained: "'All Right Now' was created after a bad gig in Durham, England. Our repertoire at that time was mostly slow and medium paced blues songs which was alright if you were a student sitting quietly and nodding your head to the beat. However, we finished our show in Durham and walked off the stage to the sound of our own footsteps. The applause had died before I had even left the drum riser. When we got into the dressing room, it was obvious that we needed an uptempo number, a rocker to close our shows. All of sudden, the Inspiration struck (bass player Andy) Fraser, and he started bopping around singing ALL RIGHT NOW... He sat down and wrote it right there in the dressing room. It couldn't have taken more than 10 minutes."
This song really took off after Free's performance at the Isle of Wight Festival on August 31,1970 at the East Aftom Farm, Aftom Down, where over 600,000 people attended. Los Angeles disc jockey Joe Benson told Paul Rodgers during an on air interview that "All Right Now" is playing over the airwaves somewhere around the world once every 45 seconds.
Free weren't able to follow up this song with another hit, as the next single, "Stealer," stalled at #49 in America and didn't chart at all in the UK. In a Songfacts interview with Simon Kirke, he said: "It became a bit of an albatross around our necks, I have to say. Even though it elevated Free into the big leagues, it became a bit of an albatross because we couldn't follow it. It became a huge hit all around the world, only because we wanted to have something that people could dance to, but then, of course, we had to follow it up, and Island Records were desperate for us to follow it up.

Tetsu Yamauchi started his musical career in Japan, and became internationally recognized when he replaced Andy Fraser in Free. He recorded the solid Kossoff / Kirke / Tetsu / Rabbit side-project before doing Free's final album, the aptly-named Heartbreaker.
When Ronnie Lane left the Faces in 1973, Free had just split for the last time. The first person considered as a replacement for Lane was Andy Fraser. When the boys approached Simon Kirke, Free's drummer, about contacting Fraser with the offer, Simon recommended Tetsu, instead.
After the Faces ground to a halt, Yamauchi returned to Japan. He is, to this day, a fixture in the Japanese music scene, actively touring and recording.
Tetsu was born October 21, 1946, in Fukuoka, Japan. By the mid Sixties, Tetsu was in the Japanese folk-rock band, the Mikes. In late 1967 or early 1968, he joined a band that was touring Europe called Samurai. They moved to London for a time, recording the single "Good Morning Starshine" b/w "Temple of Gold" (UA UP2342), and a single released in Italy, "Shu Shu" b/w "Fresh Hot Breeze of Summer". They released an album on the German label, Metronome, and possibly an album in 1969 (Phillips FX-8511). They also recorded the following album:

As an aside, it appears as though it's the same Graham Smith that has worked with Teresa Brewer, Cat Stevens, Al Stewart, Magna Carta, and Alan Price, among others.
By 1970, Samarai returned to Japan. The band was led by it's vocalist, Miki Curtis. Tetsu also got a lot of session work through Miki, who was a successful producer. This included work with jazz vocalist Helen Merrill's son, Alan.
In 1972, Tetsu released the first of two solo albums. Information so far is sketchy (particularly on the second album), but here's what I've found:

Paul Kossoff
Paul Francis Kossoff (14 September 1950 – 19 March 1976) was an English guitarist best known as a member of Free. He was ranked 51st in Rolling Stone magazine list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".
Early days
Kossoff was the son of Margaret (Jenkins) and the English actor David Kossoff. His father was of Russian-Jewish descent. Kossoff started playing the guitar in the mid-1960s, being taught by session guitarist Colin Falconer, and at age 15 helped to found the band Black Cat Bones. The band played with touring blues piano player Champion Jack Dupree, did many supporting shows for Fleetwood Mac and other gigs with Fleetwood Mac cofounder Peter Green. Kossoff jammed and spent hours discussing blues playing and players. Kossoff's bandmate in Black Cat Bones was drummer Simon Kirke, and the two went on to play on Champion Jack Dupree's April 1968 album When You Feel the Feeling You Was Feeling.
Free
In April 1968 Kossoff and Kirke teamed up with Paul Rodgers (vocals) and Andy Fraser (bass) to form Free. They did the Transit circuit for two years and recorded two albums: Tons of Sobs (1968) and Free (1969). Both albums showcased the band's blues- and soul-influenced sound, a style which was in contrast to some of their progressive and heavier counterparts at the time.

"All Right Now" originally appeared on the album Fire and Water, which Free recorded on the Island Records label, formed by Chris Blackwell. In 1991, the song was remixed and re-released, reaching #8 on the UK singles chart.
"All Right Now" was a #1 hit in over 20 territories and was recognised by ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) in 1990 for garnering 1,000,000 plus radio plays in the U.S. by late 1989. In 2006, the BMI London awards included a Million Air award for 3 million air plays of All Right Now in the USA.
According to drummer Simon Kirke, "All Right Now" was written by bassist Andy Fraser and singer Paul Rodgers in the Durham Students' Union building, Dunelm House.
One of the engineers during the recordings of "All Right Now" was Roy Thomas Baker, who would later become Queen's producer (he mixed "Killer Queen", "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Don't Stop Me Now" among others).
In the CD Molten Gold - An Anthology, Free drummer Simon Kirke explained: "'All Right Now' was created after a bad gig in Durham, England. Our repertoire at that time was mostly slow and medium paced blues songs which was alright if you were a student sitting quietly and nodding your head to the beat. However, we finished our show in Durham and walked off the stage to the sound of our own footsteps. The applause had died before I had even left the drum riser. When we got into the dressing room, it was obvious that we needed an uptempo number, a rocker to close our shows. All of sudden, the Inspiration struck (bass player Andy) Fraser, and he started bopping around singing ALL RIGHT NOW... He sat down and wrote it right there in the dressing room. It couldn't have taken more than 10 minutes."
This song really took off after Free's performance at the Isle of Wight Festival on August 31,1970 at the East Aftom Farm, Aftom Down, where over 600,000 people attended. Los Angeles disc jockey Joe Benson told Paul Rodgers during an on air interview that "All Right Now" is playing over the airwaves somewhere around the world once every 45 seconds.
Free weren't able to follow up this song with another hit, as the next single, "Stealer," stalled at #49 in America and didn't chart at all in the UK. In a Songfacts interview with Simon Kirke, he said: "It became a bit of an albatross around our necks, I have to say. Even though it elevated Free into the big leagues, it became a bit of an albatross because we couldn't follow it. Tetsu Yamauchi started his musical career in Japan, and became internationally recognized when he replaced Andy Fraser in Free. He recorded the solid Kossoff / Kirke / Tetsu / Rabbit side-project before doing Free's final album, the aptly-named Heartbreaker.
When Ronnie Lane left the Faces in 1973, Free had just split for the last time. The first person considered as a replacement for Lane was Andy Fraser. When the boys approached Simon Kirke, Free's drummer, about contacting Fraser with the offer, Simon recommended Tetsu, instead.
After the Faces ground to a halt, Yamauchi returned to Japan. He is, to this day, a fixture in the Japanese music scene, actively touring and recording.
Tetsu was born October 21, 1946, in Fukuoka, Japan. By the mid Sixties, Tetsu was in the Japanese folk-rock band, the Mikes. In late 1967 or early 1968, he joined a band that was touring Europe called Samurai. They moved to London for a time, recording the single "Good Morning Starshine" b/w "Temple of Gold" (UA UP2342), and a single released in Italy, "Shu Shu" b/w "Fresh Hot Breeze of Summer". They released an album on the German label, Metronome, and possibly an album in 1969 (Phillips FX-8511). They also recorded the following album:

In 1972, Tetsu released the first of two solo albums. Information so far is sketchy (particularly on the second album), but here's what I've found:

The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role. The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station. The event was free and open to the public. Attendees had the opportunity to handle type, examine tools of the trade, and pull prints of a sonnet.
The workshop was part of a series of events surrounding the exhibition of Shakespeare's First Folio at the University of Minnesota Duluth's Tweed Museum of Art through Oct. 26.
In fall 2000, Hodapp and White began offering an interactive learning experience in early modern book production in a Medieval and Renaissance Studies seminar. Their collaboration led to additional seminars and several offerings of their course, The Book in the 15th Century, in which students learn about book production through research and by producing a manuscript book and a limited-run printed book.
In addition to presentations at regional and international conferences about their experiences, Hodapp and White have also co-authored and published an article in the national journal Studies in Medieval and Renaissance Teaching.
The workshop was part of a faculty colloquium series now in its tenth year. The series provides visibility to diverse research projects by faculty members in St. Scholastica's School of Arts and Letters.
