Paul I (Russian: Па́вел I Петро́вич; Pavel Petrovich) (1 October [O.S. 20 September] 1754 – 23 March [O.S. 11 March] 1801) was the Emperor of Russia between 1796 and 1801. Officially, he was the only son of Peter III and Catherine the Great, though Catherine is said to have later stated that he was fathered by her lover Sergei Saltykov.
He remained overshadowed by his mother for much of his life. Paul's reign lasted for only five years, ending with his assassination by conspirators. His most important achievement was the adoption of the laws of succession to the Russian throne that lasted until the end of the Romanov dynasty and the Russian Empire.
He became de facto Grand Master of the Order of Hospitallers, and ordered the creation of a number of Maltese thrones (currently on display in the State Hermitage Museum, Gatchina Palace and Kremlin Armoury).
Paul was born in the Palace of Empress Elizabeth in St Petersburg. He was the son of the Grand Duchess Catherine, later Empress Catherine the Great, who was the wife of Elizabeth's heir and nephew, the Grand Duke Peter, later Emperor Peter III.

Czar Paul I was Emperor of Russia from 1796 to 1801. He came to the throne after the reign of Empress Catherine II. He cracked down against the Jacobins and supporters of revolutionary France in Russia. He had a romantic love of the ideals of chivalry and when the Knights Hospitaller were driven from Malta by Napoleon he gave them refuge and was chosen Grand Master. A firm supporter of the autocracy he opposed democracy and almost anything that came from Western Europe as dangerously un-Russian. He sent his armies against Napoleonic France but later became hostile to Britain before he was murdered in 1801. Much of the common opinions of Paul I, as a ruthless madman, were spread by his killers and not a totally authentic depiction of the man. He was succeeded by Czar Alexander I.

Vitaliy Melnikov's look at Czar Paul I of Russia is at once a biopic and a study of the Russian cultural ethos. Paul's reign was a short one and overshadowed by his mother and predecessor Catherine the Great - and it was beset by a number of crushing issues. "Bednyy bednyy Pavel" ("Poor Poor Paul" in English) does a good job focusing on this moment in history. A lot of the humor is stuff that you'll only get if you understand Russian culture. The actors make sure to put a lot of emotion into their roles to emphasize the Russian ethos. Check it out. Alexander I, son of Paul I, became Tsar of Russia in 1801. He was a reformer but also a defender of the traditional laws and customs of Russia. He led the Russian people in the Napoleonic Wars and defeating the French invasion of Russia. Under his leadership the Russian Empire was enlarged to include Poland and Finland as well as other areas. He is alleged to have died in 1825 though some believe he faked his death to spend the rest of his life as a wandering holy man.

Alexander I (Russian: Александр Павлович, Aleksandr Pavlovich; 23 December [O.S. 12 December] 1777 – 1 December [O.S. 19 November] 1825), reigned as Emperor of Russia from 23 March 1801 to 1 December 1825. He was the first Russian King of Poland, reigning from 1815 to 1825, as well as the first Russian Grand Duke of Finland. He was born in Saint Petersburg to Grand Duke Paul Petrovich, later Emperor Paul I and succeeded to the throne after his father was murdered. He ruled Russia during the chaotic period of the Napoleonic Wars. As prince and emperor, Alexander often used liberal rhetoric, but continued Russia's absolutist policies in practice. In the first years of his reign, he initiated some minor social reforms and, in 1803-04, major, liberal educational reforms. He promised constitut...
