Arthur Terence Galt MacDermot (born December 18, 1928) is a Canadian composer, pianist and writer of musical theatre. He won a Grammy Award for the song "African Waltz" in 1960. His most successful musicals have been Hair (1967; its cast album also won a Grammy) and Two Gentlemen of Verona (1971). MacDermot has also written music for film soundtracks, jazz and funk albums, and classical music, and his music has been sampled in hit hip-hop songs and albums.
MacDermot was born in Montreal, Quebec, the son of a Canadian diplomat. He was educated at Upper Canada College and Bishop's University (Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada). He received a Bachelor of Music from Cape Town University, South Africa and made a study of African music his specialty. He also studied the piano privately with Neil Chotem.
MacDermot won his first Grammy Award for the Cannonball Adderley recording of his song "African Waltz" (the title track of the album of the same name) in 1960. He moved to New York City in 1964 where, three years later, he wrote the music for the hit musical Hair, which he later adapted for the 1979 film. Its Broadway cast album won a Grammy Award in 1969. His next musicals were Isabel's a Jezebel (1970) and Who the Murderer Was (1970), which featured British progressive rock band Curved Air. MacDermot had another hit with the musical Two Gentlemen of Verona (1971), which won the Tony Award for Best Musical. For that show, MacDermot was nominated for a Tony for best music and won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music. His later musicals, however, including Dude and Via Galactica (both 1973) and The Human Comedy (1984), have not been successful on Broadway.

Wonderwall Music is the soundtrack album to the 1968 film Wonderwall, and the debut solo release by English musician George Harrison. It was the first album to be issued on the Beatles' Apple record label, and the first solo album by a member of that band. The songs are all instrumental pieces, except for occasional non-English vocals, and a slowed-down spoken word segment on the track "Dream Scene". Harrison recorded the album between November 1967 and February 1968, with sessions taking place in London and the Indian city of Bombay. Following his Indian-styled compositions for the Beatles since 1966, he used the film soundtrack to further promote Indian classical music by introducing rock audiences to musical instruments that were relatively little-known in the West – including shehnai, sarod and santoor.
Harrison's main collaborator on the project was classical pianist and orchestral arranger John Barham, while other contributors include Indian classical musicians Aashish Khan, Shivkumar Sharma, Shankar Ghosh and Mahapurush Misra. Harrison also recorded Western rock music selections for the album, which feature contributions from Tony Ashton and the latter's band, the Remo Four, as well as guest appearances from Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr and Peter Tork. During the sessions, Harrison recorded many other pieces that appeared in Wonderwall but not on the soundtrack album, and the Beatles' song "The Inner Light" also originated from his time in Bombay. Although the album's release in November 1968 marked the end of Harrison's direct involvement with Indian music, it inspired his later collaborations with Ravi Shankar, including the 1974 Music Festival from India.

Pilot show for Spotlight on the Arts 1995. Interview with Galt MacDermot and Tom O'Horgan
Playwright and lyricist James Rado, composer Galt MacDermot and actor Gavin Creel discuss the critically acclaimed revival of "Hair." Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins. The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.) The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded...
An interview with composer and playwright Galt MacDermot. In this interview MacDermot is asked about his latest work 'Isabel 's a Jezebel' and also one of his most famous works - the controversial musical 'Hair' First shown: 08/12/1970 If you would like to license a clip from this interview please e mail: archive@fremantlemedia.com Quote: VT61898
Hair is the most popular Musical of all time. It has been translated in every language and staged all over the world, generating pyramids of arab money. Its composer lives an intensely private life somewhere in New York. He never gave any interview and seem to ignore the cult going on about him. His name? Galt MacDermot. Our mission? The wonderful musical show, "HAIR" opened in New York in October 1967. It was the brainchild of two young actors, Gerome Ragni and James Rado, who developed it over a three-year period, 1964 - 1967. I first heard of it in 1969 when my housemate had a recording of the original production in his collection of LPs. I listened to it and was blown away. Magnificent tunes and meaningful lyrics, something I didn't think existed outside traditional folk music. I saw the stage play first chance I got when it finally came to Melbourne, and loved it. "Air" is just one of the many great songs from "Hair" - a comment on air pollution which was perhaps before it's time, though, of course, folksingers like Malvina Reynolds had brought up the subject in songs before. You can see a playlist of my songs ...

The couch literally buckled under the weight of Bernard Purdie and the huge number of heavy breaks he's unleashed upon the world. Whether it's James Brown or Aretha Franklin, jazz heavyweights like Jimmy Smith or Galt MacDermot, firing Latin leaders like Pucho and Mongo Santamaria or even - controversially - The Beatles, his innate timekeeping has provided the foundation for innumerable hit tracks, and the Purdie break has become the stuff of drum folklore. But growing up in the '40s in a family of fifteen meant the young Purdie had to get out there and make some corn - and he took that work ethic from group to group, whether carrying 'water' for band leader Leonard Hayward, pestering people for whatever session work he could get, or putting up his 'if you need me, call me' hitmaker signs ...
Probably hailed as one of the most important songwriters of her generation, Brenda Russell's music has touched a nerve with both her fans as well as musicians that have recorded her music for well over 30 years. The Brooklyn, New York native returned home to perform at The Blue Note Jazz Club's 30th Anniversary performance celebration featuring the George Duke Trio. Grammy-Award Winning bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spaulding and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington backed Mr. Duke and Miss. Russell in what would be two sold-out nights of fire-filled jazz and R & B. Russell moved to Hamilton, Ontario when she was a teen and was bitten by the music bug by her parents who were professional musicians while living in New York. Although Hamilton was a major cultural adjustment for her, she got her first...

Many westerners covered the songs Aquarius and Let The Sunshine In, including Julie Driscoll, The 5th Dimension, Little Anthony & The Imperials, Johnny Mathis, The American Group, Jennifer Warnes, even Galt MacDermot has another version, I don't blame them, what incredible songs they are to cover! Few know that these compositions made it into the USSR, and were picked up by the biggest instrumental group and the house band for the Melodiya Label. We starve-look
At one another
Short of breath
Walking proudly in our winter coats
Wearing smells from laboratories
Facing a dying nation
Of moving paper fantasy
Listening for the new told lies
With supreme visions of lonely tunes
Somewhere
Inside something there is a rush of
Greatness
Who knows what stands in front of
Our lives
I fashion my future on films in space
Silence
Tells me secretly
Everything
Everything
Manchester England England
Manchester England England
(Eyes look your last)
Across the Atlantic Sea
(Arms take your last embrace)
And I'm a genius genius
(And lips oh you the
Doors of breath)
I believe in God
(Seal with a righteous kiss)
And I believe that God believes in Claude
(Seal with a righteous kiss )
That's me, that's me, that's me
(The rest is silence
The rest is silence
The rest is silence)
We starve-look
At one another
Short of breath
Walking proudly in our winter coats
Wearing smells from laboratories
Facing a dying nation
Of moving paper fantasy
Listening for the new told lies
With supreme visions of lonely tunes
Singing
Our space songs on a spider web sitar
Life is around you and in you
