Despite being known as The City of Love, Paris is not the only romantic destination in France. Nice is a stunning, romantic, and underappreciated city of France. In addition to its beauty, Nice offers a variety of undiscovered wonders, amazing adventures, and unforgettable memories. The 19th-century mansions on Nice's promenades and boulevards, the city's Italianate old quarter, and the untamed natural terrain that offers countless breathtaking vantage points are all sources of the city's beauty.

Penny Hunting - NICE Find In Old Wheat Cent Albums!
In this video I'll cover a find that I had after emptying out three old wheat cent albums. I removed all of the wheat cents to put them in rolls to search later. There were also a few earlier Memorial cents in the albums, which I decided to hunt through. There were a total of 44 pennies in total, so the odds were slim of finding anything good. Of course, you never know until you look, and hidden within those pennies was a 1959 P DDO FS-101!
We now have merchandise! A special thanks to Graphic Rabbit for the great T-shirt design!

I wrote a book of poems for children called The Hypnotiser some years ago and then it went out of print. I couldn’t get anyone to reprint it, so I asked my son Joe to film me performing the book for this website. All you need to do is click on whichever poem you want in the gallery below.
There are second-hand copies of The Hypnotiser available on various sites on the web, most obviously at Amazon, Abe Books and eBay.
REVIEW
'Right class 6, RIGHT CLASS 6, I'm talking, I'm talking, I want complete quiet and that includes you, David Alexander, yes you...' 'The Outing', by Michael Rosen, just one of the fantastic and hilarious poems from his short story and poetry collection The Hypnotiser. This particular poem was read to me as a young child in primary school time and time again. Each time the names in the poem were changed to the names of the pupils in my class. It never got old, or less hilarious and I wouldn't hesitate in reading this to my future classes during my teaching career.
Other great poems from this collection include 'The Car Trip'; a highlight of the sibling chaos that goes on in the back of the car when Mum is driving: 'He started it. I didn't. He started it...', 'Tomato 1'; the gruelling ordeal of being given a tomato to eat by your mother and you simply just hate tomatoes, and 'Tidy Your Room'; every child's nightmare. Each and every poem and short story relates to children through typical experiences that most would have endured. This book enlightens children's love and enthusiasm for poetry, an almost forgotten about genre for most children; a runner up to fiction books.
This book can have many uses in the classroom; appropriate for children in Key Stage Two it can be read by the teacher at the end of the day during story time, like in my own experience at primary school. Or, during a poetry topic in Literacy, this book could model fun, interesting, age appropriate poetry that will inspire children to write their own poems. Likewise for shared reading; this book would be fantastic to put under the visualiser and look through with the class at the how poems are written, their structure, do they rhyme? do they tell a story? All sorts of things can be addressed with the class as a whole.
This book needs to be exposed to children, whether at school on the class bookshelf, or online where you can find video clips of Michael Rosen performing these poems; a great filler for those odd five minutes that arise during the busy school day. A Must read, not just for children but teachers as well!
Who is Michael Rosen?
My first book for children was called Mind Your Own Business and it came out in 1974. Quentin Blake did wonderful line drawings for it.
Ever since then, I’ve been doing these things:
Writing books
Writing articles for newspapers and magazines
Going to schools, libraries and theatres and performing the poems in my books
Helping children write poems and stories
Making radio programmes, mostly about words, language or books
Appearing on TV, either reading books, or talking about books
Teaching at universities about children’s literature
Running workshops for teachers about poetry
In any week, I might be doing all of these things! To tell the truth, I don’t really know what I’m doing tomorrow, unless I look in my diary to see.

The Making of Linux: The World's First Open-Source Operating System
GNU/Linux was the first complete open source and free operating system. The development of the Linux kernel and the GNU/Linux OS is one that every tech enthusiast should know.
From a hobby project in 1991 to one of the most widely used operating systems in the world, the development of Linux is a remarkable story of collaboration, innovation, and open-source software. Linux, for those that don’t know, is a community of open-source operating systems developed on top of the Linux kernel - the core of the operating system, responsible for managing resources, providing access to hardware, and communicating with other software.
One could say it all started in 1991 when Linus Torvalds, a computer science student at the University of Helsinki, started working on the operating system as a hobby ...

Unix was developed in the mid 1960s by Bell Labs, and it was a single task system written in Assembly, before it moved to C.
It still exists today, mainly in Solaris, previously owned by Sun, but now by Oracle, and others less ran options. These systems were born out of the open source code that was published before Unix became commercial.
Apart from BSD, most other Unix systems are now proprietary and generally limited to industry, finance or health related activities. They're also generally sold with the hardware they run on.
You probably all know that Linux was developed by Linus Torvalds while he was a student in Helsinki. He enjoyed Unix but at that point, the system had become proprietary, and so couldn't be tailored to his needs. As a pet project, he created his own kernel that was basically a Minix clone, itself a Unix clone, which Torvalds wanted to modify to run on 32 bit systems.
Interestingly, while Linux doesnt share any code with Unix, the kernel absolutely behaves like Unix. Linux is also POSIX compliant. POSIX being a standard that was created because so many Unix variants were popping up, that is was necessary to ensure they all worked in a similar way and were compatible with each other.
And you might wonder how a hobby project developed as open source managed to replace a commercial, company backed, already installed system. And the reasons are many.
At first, Unix couldn't be commercialized as a product, because AT&T; had entered an agreement with the US government stating they wouldn't try and sell computer software. That meant Unix was sold for the cost of shipping and printing the tapes
You received the source code as-is and patching options were limited, which meant most people who bought Unix bought it to maintain it and fix it themselves, which led to many companies creating their own versions of Unix and sharing the source code with one another.
The agreement ended, though, and this meant AT&T; could start selling Unix as a product, as could other companies. With the ability to commercialize Unix came a huge competitive battle, with each company now realizing there was money to be made, and stopping the flow of source code. Every unix version started to diverge from each other and to behave differently, which killed one of the big advantages of Unix.
ALl these sytems and competition is referred to as the Unix wars.
Also at that point, personal computers were really starting to take off, and Microsoft dominated that space with Windows.
Unix also was really only a way to sell computers that ran on RISC chips. At the time, Intel's x86 was a very limited architecture, had poor performance compared to RISC CPUs, and was only suitable to be produced en masse cheaply for the end user.
But with these sales, Intel, and then AMD were able to fund the development of better chips, which in turn outgrew the RISC chips that Unix depended on to be sold.
But why Linux and not BSD? BSD had existed for longer, it was a known quantity, and it worked in the same way as what companies were used to.
The gist of it is legal battles. BSD was slowly moving away from code used in the original SYSTEM V, which AT&T; held the rights to. AT&T; then sued Berkeley Software Design, arguing they had breached Unix's license contract, that their code infringed on copyright, and that it diluted the UNIX trademark.
With this lawsuit, BSD was prevented from distributing the Net/2 release until the case was decided, which basically stopped them in their tracks.

One could say it all started in 1991 when Linus Torvalds, a computer science student at the University of Helsinki, started working on the operating system as a hobby project. He was frustrated with the proprietary nature of existing operating systems and wanted to create a free and open-source alternative that anyone could use and contribute to. A kernel that could be independent of any OS and be used on his hardware, the new Intel 80386 microprocessor. But it began 22 years earlier. This is the story of the development of the Linux kernel and the GNU/Linux operating system.
I hope you enjoyed it. The FreeBSD Open Source Operating System is one of the oldest, largest, and most successful open source projects, with a long history of innovation. FreeBSD descended from Berkeley Unix back in the early '90s, with its lineage dating back 50 years to the original UNIX. It’s known for its reliability, stability, and advanced networking and performance. Deb will take you through its long history and highlight some of the features that set FreeBSD apart from other operating systems. She'll describe how the FreeBSD Project works and how you can contribute to the Project. She will point out some of the differences between FreeBSD and Linux, and share why individuals and companies use FreeBSD. In fact, she'll explain how you are most likely using FreeBSD now!
linux.conf.au is a conference about the Linux operating system, and all aspects of the thriving ecosystem of Free and Open Source Software that has grown up around it. Run since 1999, in a different Australian or New Zealand city each year, by a team of local volunteers, LCA invites more than 500 people to learn from the people who shape the future of Open Source.
