Boones Mill, Virginia

Boones Mill is a town in Franklin County, Virginia, United States. The population was 285 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Boones Mill was incorporated in 1927. It was previously known as Boone Mill and Boon Mill. The town is named after Jacob Boon who operated a mill in the town.

Bowman Farm, the Cahas Mountain Rural Historic District, Jubal A. Early House, and Piedmont Mill Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Geography

Boones Mill is located at 37°6′56″N 79°57′14″W / 37.11556°N 79.95389°W / 37.11556; -79.95389 (37.115462, -79.953966).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.9 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 285 people, 131 households, and 77 families residing in the town. The population density was 387.5 people per square mile (148.7/km²). There were 138 housing units at an average density of 187.6 per square mile (72.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.79% White, 2.46% African American, 0.70% Native American and 1.05% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.05% of the population.

Virginia (ⁱ/vərˈdʒɪnjə/ vər-JIN-yə, UK /vərˈdʒɪniə/ vər-JIN-ee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state located in the South Atlantic region of the United States. Virginia is nicknamed the "Old Dominion" due to its status as the first colonial possession established in mainland British America, and "Mother of Presidents" because eight U.S. presidents were born there, more than any other state. Virginia was one of the 13 Colonies in the American Revolution and joined the Confederacy in the American Civil War, during which Richmond was made the Confederate capital and Virginia's northwestern counties seceded to form the state of West Virginia. Although the Commonwealth was under one-party rule for nearly a century following Reconstruction, both major national parties are competitive in modern Virginia.

50 Virginia

50 Virginia /vərˈdʒɪnjə/ is a large, very dark main belt asteroid. It was discovered by American astronomer James Ferguson on October 4, 1857 from the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. German astronomer Robert Luther discovered it independently on October 19 from Düsseldorf, and his discovery was announced first.

The reason for Virginia's name is not known; it may be named after Verginia, the Roman noblewoman slain by her father, but it may alternatively have been named after the American state of Virginia, which is contiguous with Washington.

Photometric observations of this asteroid at the Organ Mesa Observatory in Las Cruces, New Mexico during 2008 gave a light curve with a period of 14.315 ± 0.001 hours and a brightness variation of 0.19 ± 0.02 in magnitude. The shape of the light curve at the maximum was found to change with phase angle.

The orbit of 50 Virginia places it in an 11:4 mean motion resonance with the planet Jupiter. The computed Lyapunov time for this asteroid is only 10,000 years, indicating that it occupies a chaotic orbit that will change randomly over time because of gravitational perturbations of the planets.
