The End Of The 1940's
Patty Andrews was the de facto leader of the Andrews Sisters and the last surviving member. The Andrews Sisters - LaVerne, Patty and Maxene - were the greatest female singing group of the 20th Century, and they represented the 1940's more than any other entertainers. Their performance of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy Of Company B, in the 1941 movie Buck Privates, is one of the iconic performances in show business history. Stanley Karnow was one of the best American reporters during the Vietnam War and his book on the war is a classic. Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner was the lead singer of the 1970's funk group, The Ohio Players, whose big hit was Love Rollercoaster.
The Andrews Sisters were a American close harmony singing group of the swing and boogie-woogie eras. The group consisted of three sisters: contralto LaVerne Sophia (July 6, 1911 -- May 8, 1967), soprano Maxine Angelyn "Maxene" (January 3, 1916 -- October 21, 1995), and mezzo-soprano Patricia Marie "Patty" (February 16, 1918 -- January 30, 2013).[1] Throughout their long career, the sisters sold well over 75 million records (the last official count released by MCA Records in the mid-1970s). Their 1941 hit "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" can be considered an early example of rhythm and blues[2][3] or jump blues.
The Andrews Sisters' harmonies and songs are still influential today, and have been covered by entertainers such as Bette Midler, The Puppini Sisters, Christina Aguilera, and The Three Belles. The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998.[4] Writing for Bloomberg, Mark Schoifet said the sisters became the most popular female vocal group of the first half of the 20th century.
Until the advent of the Supremes, the sisters were the most imitated of all female singing groups and influenced many artists, including Mel Tormé, Les Paul and Mary Ford, The Four Freshmen, The McGuire Sisters, The Manhattan Dolls, The Lennon Sisters, The Pointer Sisters, The Manhattan Transfer, The Puppini Sisters, Barry Manilow, and Bette Midler. Even Elvis Presley was a fan. Most of the Andrews Sisters' music has been restored and released in compact disc form, yet over 300 of their original Decca recordings, a good portion of which was hit material, has yet to be released by MCA/Decca in over 50 years. Many of these Decca recordings have been used in such television shows and Hollywood movies as Homefront, ER, The Brink's Job, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Swing Shift, Raggedy Man, Summer of '42, Slaughterhouse-Five, Maria's Lovers, Harlem Nights, In Dreams, Murder in the First, L.A. Confidential, American Horror Story, Just Shoot Me, Gilmore Girls, Mama's Family, War and Remembrance, Jakob the Liar, Lolita, The Polar Express, The Chronicles of Narnia, Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and Don't Come Back!!). Comical references to the trio in television sitcoms can be found as early as I Love Lucy and as recently as Everybody Loves Raymond. In 2007, their version of "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" was included in the game BioShock, a first-person shooter that takes place in an alternate history 1960, and later in 2008, their song "Civilization" (with Danny Kaye) was included in the Atomic Age-inspired video game Fallout 3. The 2010 video game Mafia II features numerous Andrews Sisters songs, with 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy', 'Strip Polka' and 'Rum And Coca-Cola'. The 2011 video game L.A. Noire features the song Pistol Packin' Mama, where the sisters perform a duet with Bing Crosby.[citation needed]
Christina Aguilera used the Andrews Sisters' "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" to inspire her song "Candyman" (released as a single in 2007) from her hit album Back to Basics. The song was co-written by Linda Perry. The London based trio the Puppini Sisters uses their style harmonies on several Andrews Sisters and other hits of the 1940s and 1950s as well as later rock and disco hits. The trio has said their name is a tribute to The Andrews Sisters. Stanley Andrews
Stanley Andrews (August 28, 1891 – June 23, 1969) was an American actor perhaps best known as the voice of Daddy Warbucks on the radio program Little Orphan Annie and later as "The Old Ranger", the first host of the syndicated western anthology television series, Death Valley Days.
Biography
Early life
Andrews was born Stanley Andrzejewski in Chicago, Illinois. Little is known of his early years, except that he was reared in the Midwest. As a young adult, he acted on stage and in radio.
Career
His first big role was on radio as Daddy Warbucks in the Little Orphan Annie series, where he starred from 1931 to 1936. He appeared in more than 250 movies, which included Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Beau Geste, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Ox-Bow Incident, It's a Wonderful Life (he played Mr. Welch, the teacher's husband who beats James Stewart, though he was not credited), The Lemon Drop Kid, Superman and the Mole Men (the very first theatrical Superman film); his final film role in Cry Terror! in 1958.

Patty Andrews was the de facto leader of the Andrews Sisters and the last surviving member. The Andrews Sisters - LaVerne, Patty and Maxene - were the greatest female singing group of the 20th Century, and they represented the 1940's more than any other entertainers. Their performance of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy Of Company B, in the 1941 movie Buck Privates, is one of the iconic performances in show business history. Stanley Karnow was one of the best American reporters during the Vietnam War and his book on the war is a classic. Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner was the lead singer of the 1970's funk group, The Ohio Players, whose big hit was Love Rollercoaster.
The Andrews Sisters were a American close harmony singing group of the swing and boogie-woogie eras. The group consisted of three sisters: contralto LaVerne Sophia (July 6, 1911 -- May 8, 1967), soprano Maxine Angelyn "Maxene" (January 3, 1916 -- October 21, 1995), and mezzo-soprano Patricia Marie "Patty" (February 16, 1918 -- January 30, 2013).[1] Throughout their long career, the sisters sold well over 75 million records (the last official count released by MCA Records in the mid-1970s). Their 1941 hit "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" can be considered an early example of rhythm and blues[2][3] or jump blues.
The Andrews Sisters' harmonies and songs are still influential today, and have been covered by entertainers such as Bette Midler, The Puppini Sisters, Christina Aguilera, and The Three Belles. The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998.[4] Writing for Bloomberg, Mark Schoifet said the sisters became the most popular female vocal group of the first half of the 20th century.

Scared to Death (1947) is a thriller film directed by Christy Cabanne and starring Bela Lugosi. The picture was filmed in Cinecolor. This movie is historically important as the only color film in which Bela Lugosi has a starring role.
The film opens with the disclosure by morgue examiners that a beautiful woman has literally died of fright. The plot reveals how she reached the fatal stage of terror.
The woman is married to the son of a doctor, the proprietor of a private sanatorium, where she is under unwilling treatment. Both the son and the doctor indicate they want the marriage dissolved. Arriving at the scene is a mysterious personage (Bela Lugosi) identified as the doctor's cousin who had been a stage magician in Europe. He is accompanied by a threatening dwarf (Angelo Rossitto).
After it is apparent that the wife is terrified of the foreigners, it is disclosed that she is the former wife and stage partner of a Paris magician known as René, who was believed to have been shot by the Nazis. Attempts to draw a confession that she had betrayed her magician husband and had collaborated with the Nazis led to the use of a device employing a death mask of the supposedly dead patriot, which literally frightens her to death.
Although the young newspaperman hero and his sweetheart guess the answer to the story, they allow the diagnosis "scared to death" to stand.

1. John Lennon
The Fab Four were living the life. They were international stars at a young age and led to their massive following famously nicknamed Beatlemania. John Lennon was one of the admired members, particularly among the ladies. The songwriter also had an impressive start to his solo career after the Beatles broke up. The fame must have gotten to his head before his untimely death, in an interview he stated, “Christianity will end, it will disappear. I do not have to argue about that. I am certain. Jesus was ok, but his subjects were too simple, Today, we are more famous than Him.” The controversial statement made in 1966 eventually saw the Fab Four break up. In 1980, Lennon was shot by a fanatic, David Chapman, in his residence on New York after a recording session. People claim that he was punished for what he said...
2. Thomas Andrews
The Irish businessman is known for his shipbuilding skills as the naval architect of his crown jewel RMS Titanic. He oversaw its construction and familiarized himself with all the operational details of the Titanic. After observing it and conducting a series of tests, he was full of confidence about the workings of the great ship. During a questioning session as a result of the large media coverage of the Titanic, a reporter asked him how safe the Titanic would be. He replied, “Not even God can sink it.” On April 1912, the ship sank after hitting an iceberg on its first voyage to New York City claiming over 1500 lives. This made it one of the worst commercial disasters in history. Thomas Andrews died in the collision and his body was never recovered.
3. President of Brazil, Tancredo Neves
His presidential campaigns were something to marvel. He opposed previous military regimes in Brazil and inspired Brazilians to participate in the political process. This made him a popular figure amongst the Brazilian people. During his campaigns, he said if he got 500,000 votes from his party, even God would not unseat him as president. The soon-to-be Brazil’s first civilian president in 20 years was never sworn in and died following complications from a surgery at the Heart Institute. This was just a few days away from his election. Diagnosed with a life-threatening ailment, he underwent several operations but eventually relapsed from his final surgery.
4. Bon Scott
Front man for popular rock band AC/DC, Australian Bon Scott was in his heyday. The band was on top and he had just replaced the lead singer Dave Evans in 1974. He put pen-to-paper and his songwriting skills shone on the band’s album released in 1979. He came up with the opening track “I’m on the highway to hell” a standout track on the album. At his peak, a surprising turn of events took place and in 1980 he choked on his own vomit after a night out with his band mates. The cause of death was alcohol poisoning. The band later dedicated their album, “Back in Black,” to honor the memory of their fallen lead singer.
5. Marilyn Monroe
The cream of the crop of Hollywood celebrities. She had it all: the looks and the talent. Despite her outward expression of her beauty, she kept her suffering to herself. During her filming routines, Billy Graham, a Christian televangelist, visited her and stated that he had been instructed to preach to her by the spirit of God. She then replied, “I don’t need your Jesus.” She was later found in her bedroom, laying lifeless. It is rumored that she committed suicide as she was suffering from severe depression.

The End Of The 1940's
Patty Andrews was the de facto leader of the Andrews Sisters and the last surviving member. The Andrews Sisters - LaVerne, Patty and Maxene - were the greatest female singing group of the 20th Century, and they represented the 1940's more than any other entertainers. Their performance of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy Of Company B, in the 1941 movie Buck Privates, is one of the iconic performances in show business history. Stanley Karnow was one of the best American reporters during the Vietnam War and his book on the war is a classic. Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner was the lead singer of the 1970's funk group, The Ohio Players, whose big hit was Love Rollercoaster.
The Andrews Sisters were a American close harmony singing group of the swing and boogie-woogie eras. The group consisted of three sisters: contralto LaVerne Sophia (July 6, 1911 -- May 8, 1967), soprano Maxine Angelyn "Maxene" (January 3, 1916 -- October 21, 1995), and mezzo-soprano Patricia Marie "Patty" (February 16, 1918 -- January 30, 2013).[1] Throughout their long career, the sisters sold well over 75 million records (the last official count released by MCA Records in the mid-1970s). Their 1941 hit "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" can be considered an early example of rhythm and blues[2][3] or jump blues.
The Andrews Sisters' harmonies and songs are still influential today, and have been covered by entertainers such as Bette Midler, The Puppini Sisters, Christina Aguilera, and The Three Belles. The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998.[4] Writing for Bloomberg, Mark Schoifet said the sisters became the most popular female vocal group of the first half of the 20th century.
Until the advent of the Supremes, the sisters were the most imitated of all female singing groups and influenced many artists, including Mel Tormé, Les Paul and Mary Ford, The Four Freshmen, The McGuire Sisters, The Manhattan Dolls, The Lennon Sisters, The Pointer Sisters, The Manhattan Transfer, The Puppini Sisters, Barry Manilow, and Bette Midler. Even Elvis Presley was a fan. Most of the Andrews Sisters' music has been restored and released in compact disc form, yet over 300 of their original Decca recordings, a good portion of which was hit material, has yet to be released by MCA/Decca in over 50 years. Many of these Decca recordings have been used in such television shows and Hollywood movies as Homefront, ER, The Brink's Job, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Swing Shift, Raggedy Man, Summer of '42, Slaughterhouse-Five, Maria's Lovers, Harlem Nights, In Dreams, Murder in the First, L.A. Confidential, American Horror Story, Just Shoot Me, Gilmore Girls, Mama's Family, War and Remembrance, Jakob the Liar, Lolita, The Polar Express, The Chronicles of Narnia, Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and Don't Come Back!!). Comical references to the trio in television sitcoms can be found as early as I Love Lucy and as recently as Everybody Loves Raymond. In 2007, their version of "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" was included in the game BioShock, a first-person shooter that takes place in an alternate history 1960, and later in 2008, their song "Civilization" (with Danny Kaye) was included in the Atomic Age-inspired video game Fallout 3. The 2010 video game Mafia II features numerous Andrews Sisters songs, with 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy', 'Strip Polka' and 'Rum And Coca-Cola'. The 2011 video game L.A. Noire features the song Pistol Packin' Mama, where the sisters perform a duet with Bing Crosby.[citation needed]
Christina Aguilera used the Andrews Sisters' "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" to inspire her song "Candyman" (released as a single in 2007) from her hit album Back to Basics. The song was co-written by Linda Perry. The London based trio the Puppini Sisters uses their style harmonies on several Andrews Sisters and other hits of the 1940s and 1950s as well as later rock and disco hits. The trio has said their name is a tribute to The Andrews Sisters. The End Of The 1940's
Patty Andrews was the de facto leader of the Andrews Sisters and the last surviving member. The Andrews Sisters - LaVerne, Patty and Maxene - were the greatest female singing group of the 20th Century, and they represented the 1940's more than any other entertainers. Their performance of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy Of Company B, in the 1941 movie Buck Privates, is one of the iconic performances in show business history. Stanley Karnow was one of the best American reporters during the Vietnam War and his book on the war is a classic. Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner was the lead singer of the 1970's funk group, The Ohio Players, whose big hit was Love Rollercoaster.
The Andrews Sisters were a American close harmony singing group of the swing and boogie-woogie eras. The group consisted of three sisters: contralto LaVerne Sophia (July 6, 1911 -- May 8, 1967), soprano Maxine Angelyn "Maxene" (January 3, 1916 -- October 21, 1995), and mezzo-soprano Patricia Marie "Patty" (February 16, 1918 -- January 30, 2013).[1] Throughout their long career, the sisters sold well over 75 million records (the last official count released by MCA Records in the mid-1970s). Their 1941 hit "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" can be considered an early example of rhythm and blues[2][3] or jump blues.
The Andrews Sisters' harmonies and songs are still influential today, and have been covered by entertainers such as Bette Midler, The Puppini Sisters, Christina Aguilera, and The Three Belles. The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998.[4] Writing for Bloomberg, Mark Schoifet said the sisters became the most popular female vocal group of the first half of the 20th century.
Until the advent of the Supremes, the sisters were the most imitated of all female singing groups and influenced many artists, including Mel Tormé, Les Paul and Mary Ford, The Four Freshmen, The McGuire Sisters, The Manhattan Dolls, The Lennon Sisters, The Pointer Sisters, The Manhattan Transfer, The Puppini Sisters, Barry Manilow, and Bette Midler. Even Elvis Presley was a fan. Most of the Andrews Sisters' music has been restored and released in compact disc form, yet over 300 of their original Decca recordings, a good portion of which was hit material, has yet to be released by MCA/Decca in over 50 years. Many of these Decca recordings have been used in such television shows and Hollywood movies as Homefront, ER, The Brink's Job, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Swing Shift, Raggedy Man, Summer of '42, Slaughterhouse-Five, Maria's Lovers, Harlem Nights, In Dreams, Murder in the First, L.A. Confidential, American Horror Story, Just Shoot Me, Gilmore Girls, Mama's Family, War and Remembrance, Jakob the Liar, Lolita, The Polar Express, The Chronicles of Narnia, Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and Don't Come Back!!). Comical references to the trio in television sitcoms can be found as early as I Love Lucy and as recently as Everybody Loves Raymond. In 2007, their version of "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" was included in the game BioShock, a first-person shooter that takes place in an alternate history 1960, and later in 2008, their song "Civilization" (with Danny Kaye) was included in the Atomic Age-inspired video game Fallout 3. The 2010 video game Mafia II features numerous Andrews Sisters songs, with 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy', 'Strip Polka' and 'Rum And Coca-Cola'. The 2011 video game L.A. Noire features the song Pistol Packin' Mama, where the sisters perform a duet with Bing Crosby.[citation needed]
Christina Aguilera used the Andrews Sisters' "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" to inspire her song "Candyman" (released as a single in 2007) from her hit album Back to Basics. The song was co-written by Linda Perry. The London based trio the Puppini Sisters uses their style harmonies on several Andrews Sisters and other hits of the 1940s and 1950s as well as later rock and disco hits. The trio has said their name is a tribute to The Andrews Sisters.
