Reposted at long last, here is the full video for the only episode of the Burns and Allen show to be filmed in color, the premiere of season 5 (originally aired on Oct 4, 1954). I'd uploaded this to the Vintage Comedy Vault channel a couple of years ago, but that channel was unceremoniously deleted by YouTube due to outrageous copyright claims.
The only copies of this episode in syndicated reruns have all been in black and white. As far as I know, the color version was shown only once. In this episode, George has invited a pair of TV critics over to watch the season premiere of George and Gracie's ""show"".
The color balance is definitely off in this copy (I tinkered with it the best I could), but still, it's quite a treat to see George and Gracie in color-- color television didn't take off until many years after Gracie's retirement. Gracie was supposed to have been very resistant to being filmed in color due to her insecurity over having eyes that were different colors, but it's not at all visible here.

Gracie Allen
Grace Ethel Cecile Rosalie "Gracie" Allen (July 26, 1895 – August 27, 1964), was an American comedienne who became internationally famous as the zany partner and comic foil of husband and "straight man" George Burns. For contributions to the television industry, Gracie Allen was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6672 Hollywood Boulevard. The team of Burns and Allen was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1988.
Early life
Allen was born in San Francisco, California, to George Allen and Margaret Theresa ("Molly") Allen (née Darragh; later Mrs. Edward Pidgeon), who were both of Irish Catholic extraction. She made her first appearance on stage at age three and was given her first role on the radio by Eddie Cantor. She was educated at the Star of the Sea Convent School and during that time became a talented dancer.
She soon began performing Irish folk dances with her three sisters, who were billed as "The Four Colleens". In 1909, Allen joined her sister, Bessie, as a vaudeville performer. At a performance in 1922, Allen met George Burns and the two formed a comedy act. They were married on January 7, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio.

George Burns
George Burns (born Nathan Birnbaum; January 20, 1896 – March 9, 1996) was an American comedian, actor, singer, and writer. He was one of the few entertainers whose career successfully spanned vaudeville, film, radio, and television. His arched eyebrow and cigar-smoke punctuation became familiar trademarks for over three-quarters of a century.
When Burns was 79, he had a sudden career revival as an amiable, beloved and unusually active comedy elder statesman in the 1975 film The Sunshine Boys, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He continued to work until shortly before his death, in 1996, at the age of 100, of cardiac arrest in his home.
Early life
George Burns was born Nathan Birnbaum on January 20, 1896 in New York City, the ninth of 12 children born to Louis "Lippe" and Dorah (née Bluth) Birnbaum, Jewish immigrants who had come to the United States from Romania. Burns was a member of the First Roumanian-American congregation.
His father was a substitute cantor at the local synagogue but usually worked as a coat presser. During the influenza epidemic of 1903, Lippe Birnbaum contracted the flu and died at the age of 47. Nattie (as George was then called) went to work to help support the family, shining shoes, running errands and selling newspapers.

Reposted at long last, here is the full video for the only episode of the Burns and Allen show to be filmed in color, the premiere of season 5 (originally aired on Oct 4, 1954). I'd uploaded this to the Vintage Comedy Vault channel a couple of years ago, but that channel was unceremoniously deleted by YouTube due to outrageous copyright claims.
The only copies of this episode in syndicated reruns have all been in black and white. As far as I know, the color version was shown only once. In this episode, George has invited a pair of TV critics over to watch the season premiere of George and Gracie's ""show"".
The color balance is definitely off in this copy (I tinkered with it the best I could), but still, it's quite a treat to see George and Gracie in color-- color television didn't take off until many years after Gracie's retirement. Gracie was supposed to have been very resistant to being filmed in color due to her insecurity over having eyes that were different colors, but it's not at all visible here.

Reposted at long last, here is the full video for the only episode of the Burns and Allen show to be filmed in color, the premiere of season 5 (originally aired on Oct 4, 1954). I'd uploaded this to the Vintage Comedy Vault channel a couple of years ago, but that channel was unceremoniously deleted by YouTube due to outrageous copyright claims.
The only copies of this episode in syndicated reruns have all been in black and white. As far as I know, the color version was shown only once. In this episode, George has invited a pair of TV critics over to watch the season premiere of George and Gracie's ""show"".

As most everyone knows, George and Jack were VERY close friends in real life, often trading appearances on each other's radio and TV shows {with and without Gracie}. So they knew a situation where each of them tries to top the other was "comedic gold" for both of them [and both were excellent monologists, thanks to their roots in vaudeville].
George also had an advantage in that he was one of the few people who could make Jack Benny laugh by doing "simple" things that no one else would find funny {and Jack was an easy "laugher"}- such as rolling down his car window and motioning Jack to pull over in the middle of busy Hollywood traffic, then driving off as if he had no intention of stopping to talk to him at all. As Jack later recalled, it took over a half-hour to compose himself before he could safely manuver his way into traffic again.
