Iceland (i/ˈaɪslænd/; Icelandic: Ísland [ˈistlant]), also called the Republic of Iceland, is a Nordic island country between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. It has a population of 329,100 and an area of 103,000 km2 (40,000 sq mi), making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík. Reykjavík and the surrounding areas in the southwest of the country are home to over two-thirds of the population. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. The interior consists of a plateau characterised by sand and lava fields, mountains and glaciers, while many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate, despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle. Its high latitude and marine influence still keeps summers chilly, with most of the archipelago having a tundra climate.
According to Landnámabók, the settlement of Iceland began in the year 874 when the Norwegian chieftain Ingólfr Arnarson became the first permanent settler on the island. In the following centuries, mainly Norwegians and to a smaller extent other Scandinavians settled Iceland, bringing with them thralls of Gaelic origin. From 1262 to 1814, Iceland was ruled by Norway and afterwards by Denmark. Until the 20th century, the country relied largely on fishing and agriculture. Iceland became independent in 1918 and a republic in 1944. Industrialisation of the fisheries and Marshall Plan aid following World War II brought prosperity and Iceland became one of the wealthiest and most developed nations in the world. In 1994, it became a part of the European Economic Area, which supported diversification into economic and financial services.
Alterra Power Corp. is a diversified renewable power generation company based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It was formed in 2011 through the merger of Magma Energy Corp. and Plutonic Power Corp. It develops geothermal, hydroelectric, wind, and solar energy projects. The company is listed under AXY on the Toronto Stock Exchange, and has a secondary listing OTC in the USA under MGMXF:US.
On 7 March 2011, it was announced that Magma Energy and Plutonic Power would merge to create Alterra Power Corp. Magma Energy was renamed Alterra Power and each shareholder of Plutonic Power received 2.38 shares of Magma for each Plutonic share held. As a result, the merged company owns two geothermal power plants in Iceland, and one in Nevada, one run of river hydro plant and one wind farm in British Columbia and an option on a solar project in Ontario. Executive Chairman of Alterra Power is Ross Beaty (founder of Magma Energy) and the CEO is John Carson.
Earth sheltering is the architectural practice of using earth against building walls for external thermal mass, to reduce heat loss, and to easily maintain a steady indoor air temperature. Earth sheltering has become relatively more popular in modern times, especially among environmentalists and advocates of passive solar and sustainable architecture. However, the practice has been around for nearly as long as humans have been constructing their own shelters.
The expression earth-sheltering is a generic term, with the general meaning: building design in which soil plays an integral part.
A building can be described as earth-sheltered if its external envelope is in contact with a thermally significant volume of soil or substrate (where “thermally significant” means making a functional contribution to the thermal effectiveness of the building in question.)
Earth-sheltered buildings consist of one or more of three types: earth-covered, earth-bunded, and subterranean. An earth-covered building is one where the thermally effective element is placed solely on the roof, but is more usually a continuation of the earth-bunding at the unexposed elevations of the building. An earth-bunded building is one where the thermally significant element insulates one or more of the sheltered elevations of the building. The bunding can be partial or total. A subterranean building is one where the thermally significant element insulates all elevations of the building, leaving only the roof exposed; or, if the building is built into an incline, it may be that the roof is covered and only one elevation is left exposed.

Papaver nudicaule (syn. Papaver croceum, P. miyabeanum,P. amurense, and P. macounii), the Iceland poppy, is a boreal flowering plant. Native to subpolar regions of Europe, Asia and North America, and the mountains of Central Asia (but not in Iceland), Iceland poppies are hardy but short-lived perennials, often grown as biennials, that yield large, papery, bowl-shaped, lightly fragrant flowers supported by hairy, one foot, curved stems among feathery blue-green foliage 1-6 inches long. They were first described by botanists in 1759. The wild species blooms in white or yellow, and is hardy from USDA Zones 3a-10b. All parts of this plant are likely to be poisonous, containing (like all poppies) toxic alkaloids. In particular, P. nudicaule has been shown to contain the benzophenanthidine alkaloid, chelidonine. It also contains (+)-amurine, (-)-amurensinine, (-)-O-methylthalisopavine, (-)-flavinantine and (-)-amurensine.
Cultivars come in shades of yellow, orange, salmon, rose, pink, cream and white as well as bi-colored varieties. Seed strains include: ‘Champagne Bubbles’ (15-inch plants in orange, pink, scarlet, apricot, yellow, and creamy-white); ‘Wonderland’ (10-inch dwarf strain with flowers up to 4 inches wide); ‘Flamenco’ (pink shades, bordered white, 1½ to 2 feet tall); ‘Party Fun’ (to 1 foot, said to bloom reliably the first year in autumn and the second spring); ‘Illumination’ and ‘Meadow Pastels’ (to 2 feet, perhaps the tallest strains); ‘Matador’ (scarlet flowers to 5 inches across on 16 inch plants); the perennial 'Victory Giants' with red petals and ‘Oregon Rainbows’, which has large selfed, bicolor, and picoteed flowers and is perhaps the best strain for the cool Pacific Northwest (elsewhere this strain’s buds frequently fail to open).

Almost as hard to pronounce as Eyjafjallajokull, the farm Eyvindarmuli (east) is now for sale. Location in the beautiful south of Iceland gives access to popular destinations as well as into the vast highlands. This is a rare opportunity as a private residence, as an opportunity in tourism, as a horse farm . . . or simply as a farm . . . as its been since in the age of the vikings. Regenerative energies have never been more in demand. Geothermal energy is being hailed as one of the most promising energy sources of the future - readily available and emission-free. It's already being used in many countries. Iceland is pioneering use of geothermal energy - not least due to its special geological location and the high concentration of volcanoes and geysers. Geothermal heat is one of Iceland's greatest natural resources, and outside interest is inevitable. The Canadian company Magma Energy is the first foreign business to buy stakes in Icelandic geothermal companies - locals are up in arms and protesting loudly.
The most comprehensive (and fun) South Coast Iceland guide you have seen. Secret spots revealed too. You're in good (and fun) hands. You're welcome ;) This is a 3-5 day tour. 3 days is really squeezing it tight and it will be rushed, 5 days is a good amount of time to enjoy yourself fully. You can 'shower' along the spots on the south coast - like the Hofn hot tubs, or the Svartifoss facilities, or just stay dirty for a few days ;) The Mink is fully equipped. It has everything you need. You literally just need to bring yourself. It's a simple design and it works on the concept of minimalism. So the kitchen for example is SUPER simple, but it means you keep your adventure simple and straightforward. The bed is INSANELY comfortable and there's heating inside. And it gets crazy warm. ...
Share this moment in Iceland with us. Checking out a plot of land for sale. The directions were really obscure, like: "Follow the tarmac road until the electric cable crosses it, then take the next right, onto a loose surface road. Next intersection turn left, and drive until you see an old pillar with a pot nailed to it. That is the driveway towards the plot. You will recognise the plot from half the fence lying on the ground. There is no building on the property, although there are some trees and boulders, and there may be some snow on the hill." -- FOUND IT!!!
In this video we tour a traditional Icelandic turf house at the Islenski Baerinn Turf House museum (http://islenskibaerinn.is/english/). Turf houses are the original green buildings because they were built using local and natural materials. In Southern Iceland they used turf from the local wetlands and lava stones to build thick walls that would insulate the houses against wind and cold weather. They imported small amounts of wood, or used driftwood. Most turf houses in Iceland were torn down after World War II when people were encouraged to modernize their homes which means there are almost no turf houses left. So we felt really lucky to visit the Islenski Baerinn Turf House museum in Southern Iceland and meet with Hannes who runs the museum and whose grandparents and great grandparen...

With a population of only 300,000, Iceland can feel like the most isolated place on earth, yet its capital Reykjavik, is only a three-hour flight from London and just under six from New York. Reykjavik is relaxed and welcoming, yet possesses a cultural life that holds its own against other European capitals. Most buildings are built simple and low to beat the North Atlantic winds. However, the city is also graced with grand civic architecture inspired by Iceland’s natural beauty, such as the soaring central tower of Hallgrímskirkja. Many of the country’s most popular sights are within easy reach of Reykjavík. Immerse yourself in the spirit of Iceland, at the Blue Lagoon. Then spend a day or two in The Golden Circle, an area which encompasses three of Iceland’s greatest natural wonders;...

In today's video I am still traveling Iceland and I was traveling to iceland in winter. It has been such a rewarding experience with Iceland's beautiful nature including the geothermal hot river in Reykjadalur Iceland. This Natural Hot River in Iceland was one of the most amazing things I have seen in my life and is heated up by the volcanoes with magma underneath the earth's surfaces. The Iceland Hot Spring River is definitely a must see if you're visiting Iceland and takes about 1.5 hour hike up a mountain. Iceland is also home to some of the best waterfalls to see in Iceland includng the Skogafoss waterfall Iceland which is amazing because you can actually walk behind it, and a nearby waterfall not as known but personally I think it's much better as one of Iceland's highest and biggest ...
Students from the University of Trondheim have embraced the Norwegian cabin tradition and have built/rehabbed a network of 23 small cabins available to students interested in overnighting in isolated nature. The group- NTNUI (NTNU sportsklubb)- began in the 1940’s when a former Trondheim student was killed in WWII. His parents donated money and helped build the first cabin named Nicokoia after their son Nicolay. Today, the student group has built or renovated nearly two dozen “koiene” (huts). All are off-grid, many are only accessible by hiking, or cross-country skiing, several hours. They are all equipped with a working kitchen (a propane or kerosene stove) though the toilet is an outhouse and a local stream serves for drinking water and bathing. We visited the group’s newest acquisiti...

An awe-inspiring engineering feat, Dubai Palm Islands is definitely the largest artificial islands on earth. These Islands are three man made islands in the form of massive palm trees connected to the beaches of Dubai. The first island is the Palm Jumeirah, Jebel Ali Palm second and the third is the Palm Deira which is the biggest of them all. This artificial archipelago located off the coastline of United Arab Emirates in Persian Gulf. Dubai islands project was commissioned by Sheikh Mohammed in an effort to maximize beachfront property. Dubai's palm tree-shaped resort island on land built from the sea will contribute 120 km of beaches. Aside from the construction of the ambitious expansion, there is also the problem of constructing a mini city, which consists of 4,500 high-end residenti...
