Stylus Magazine

Stylus Magazine was an online music and film magazine launched in 2002. It featured long-form music journalism, four daily music reviews, movie reviews, a number of different podcasts, an MP3 blog, and a text blog.

Additionally, Stylus had daily features like "The Singles Jukebox", which looked at pop singles from around the globe, and "Soulseeking", a column focused on personal responses in listening.

While the site's readership numbers never reached the levels of Pitchfork Media's, it did receive many notices in the press for the quality of its writing. In 2006 it was chosen by the Observer Music Monthly as one of the Internet's 25 most essential music websites.

Stylus closed as a business on October 31, 2007. As of February 2013, the site remains online, but is not publishing any new content.

On January 4, 2010, with the blessing of former editor Todd Burns, Stylus senior writer Nick Southall launched The Stylus Decade, a website with a new series of lists and essays reviewing music from the previous ten years.The Singles Jukebox relaunched with many of the same writers as a stand-alone website in March 2009.

Stylus

A stylus, plural styli or styluses, is a writing utensil, or a small tool for some other form of marking or shaping, for example in pottery. It can also be a computer accessory that is used to assist in navigating or providing more precision when using touchscreens. It usually refers to a narrow elongated staff, similar to a modern ballpoint pen. Many styluses are heavily curved to be held more easily. Another widely used writing tool is the stylus used by blind users in conjunction with the slate for punching out the dots in Braille.

Styluses were first used by the ancient Mesopotamians in order to write in cuneiform. Egyptians (Middle Kingdom) and the Minoans of Crete (Linear A and Cretan Hieroglyphic) made styluses in various materials: reeds that grew on the sides of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and in marshes and down to Egypt where the Egyptians used styluses from sliced reeds with sharp points; bone and metal styluses were also used. Cuneiform was entirely based on the "wedge-shaped" mark that the end of a cut reed made when pushed into a clay tablet; from Latin cuneus = wedge. The linear writings of Crete in the first half of the second millennium BC which were made on clay tablets that were left to dry in the sun until they became "leather" hard before being incised by the stylus. The linear nature of the writing was also dictated by the use of the stylus.

LG G3

LG G3 is an Android smartphone developed by LG Electronics. First released in South Korea on May 28, 2014, it is a successor to 2013's LG G2. Inheriting design elements from the G2, such as its thin screen bezels and rear-mounted power and volume buttons, the G3 is distinguished primarily by being the first smartphone from a major manufacturer to incorporate a quad HD (1440p) display, and its inclusion of an infrared hybrid autofocus system for its camera. LG also touted the device's plastic "metallic skin"—designed to give the device a higher quality appearance, and a "simpler" user interface with an integrated intelligent personal assistant system.

The G3 received mostly positive reviews, with critics praising the overall appearance, performance, and software of the device. However, several aspects of the G3 received mixed reviews, including the company's decision to use a faux metallic plastic instead of actual metal, and the high resolution display which was criticized for artificial sharpening and poor brightness while negatively affecting battery life.

LG G3 Stylus

LG G3 Stylus is an Android smartphone developed by LG Electronics. It is a low-end phablet modeled after the design of the LG G3, and includes a stylus pen that can be used for drawing and touch input.

Reception

NDTV Gadgets noted that the G3 Stylus, despite its name, was not built to the same specifications of the G3, acknowledging its lower resolution display, a "fairly pedestrian" processor, and for lacking additional design details present on the G3. The stylus was criticized for only being a "passive" accessory with no special support in the device's software for detecting when it is in use or for pressure sensitivity (similarly to the Galaxy Note series), beyond apps that happened to make sense for use with a stylus, such as QuickMemo. The camera was considered "decent though not especially impressive", believing that it was sufficient for casual online sharing. In conclusion, the G3 Stylus was described as being a "nice enough phone", but overpriced in comparison to similar devices with better specifications.

Magazine

Magazines are publications, usually periodical publications, that are printed or electronically published (the online versions are called online magazines.) They are generally published on a regular schedule and contain a variety of content. They are generally financed by advertising, by a purchase price, by prepaid subscriptions, or a combination of the three. At its root, the word "magazine" refers to a collection or storage location. In the case of written publication, it is a collection of written articles. This explains why magazine publications share the word root with gunpowder magazines, artillery magazines, firearms magazines, and, in various languages although not English, retail stores such as department stores.

Definition

By definition, a "magazine" paginates with each issue starting at page three, with the standard sizing being 8 3/8" x 10 7/8". However, in the technical sense a "journal" has continuous pagination throughout a volume. Thus Business Week, which starts each issue anew with page one, is a magazine, but the Journal of Business Communication, which starts each volume with the winter issue and continues the same sequence of pagination throughout the coterminous year, is a journal. Some professional or trade publications are also peer-reviewed, an example being the Journal of Accountancy. Academic or professional publications that are not peer-reviewed are generally professional magazines. The fact that a publication calls itself a "journal" does not make it a journal in the technical sense. The Wall Street Journal is actually a newspaper.
