The Gentle Art of Making Enemies : Whistler James McNeill Whistler (1834 - 1903) Perhaps one of the most misunderstood artists of the nineteenth century, James MacNeill Whistler was known as a dandy, an eccentric and a wit. He was far less celebrated for the value of this work, and, while his Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother (1871) is now renowned, in his lifetime it remained unsold for nineteen years after it was painted. During his life, he was largely dismissed for his interest in "art for art's sake" but this helped prepare the ground for modern art.

The work was meticulous and intricate. In the early 1960’s she began painting while living in the Bahamas. Since moving to New Zealand in 1987, Doreen has perfected her contemporary abstract techniques. Doreen uses abstractions, grids and directions which are derived from her many years of hand drawing navigational charts for aircraft – before computers were in common use and aircraft were guided only by radio signals shown on distorted roller charts in the cockpit. While not based on any particular geographical area, the underlying inspiration for Doreen’s art work comes from the basic elements representing nature. Doreen paints in acrylics and builds up layers of exquisite colour to give the painting depth and a vibrant sense of texture. Doreen does not wish to ‘finish’ her paintings and considers art as a process that is begun by the artist and if successful, starts to live a life of it’s own. In her creative process she works on a painting until a time when she sees the painting as ‘something living’ – when the art begins to work for itself. Now in her eighties, Doreen continues to paint with passion and gusto and is still exhibiting her work in galleries throughout New Zealand. In 2014, Doreen was a finalist in the Molly Morpeth Art Awards and was a winner at the Miles Art Awards – Friends of the Gallery Award. Doreen McNeill has exhibited her work widely throughout New Zealand and overseas including Taiwan where she exhibited with Philip Trusttum and Phillippa Blair. Her work is in the permanent collections of the ASB Baypark Arena, Tauranga Hospital, and the Tauranga Art Gallery, where she had a public retrospective exhibition in 2010. Many hand skills were learned such as hand engraving, lino and woodcutting, as well as etching with zinc, copper and magnesium, later etching on film in lithography. Since the sixties David has been expanding his own painting career in watercolour, using all that he has learned to teach painters both in Australia and overseas. David is also involved in regular tutorials for the Australian and International Artist magazine. Numerous achievements include over one hundred awards in watercolour, including the Herald Sun Best Of Show Gold Medal Award at The Camberwell Rotary Exhibition 2002, a silver medal in 1976, and Silver Award in 2007. David won the prestigious Victorian Artists Society Artist Of The Year Award in 1976, 1980 and again in 1989. That same year, David received the Distinguished Leadership Award for outstanding services to watercolour and teaching from the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership and a certificate of merit for distinguished service to the community. David’s works are regularly represented in numerous public and private collections worldwide, with regular exhibitions happening in several Australian states, England, the Channel Islands and Stockholm. He has held regular one-man exhibitions of his work since 1975. In each exhibition David expresses his joy of working freely on location and his love of spontaneity, shape, light and colour. David comments that, ‘as we journey through life there are changes to our lives and to the world we live in. My passion to express myself through my painting remains constant, the experiences are often challenging, moving and uplifting. Capturing the essence of the subject as a fleeting moment in time requires speed of hand to achieve the spontaneity I like to record… the light in its many guises and drama of fleeting impressions are important factors when I am viewing this special world that is ours to be a part of. Part 4/7 Rodin (2003) Francois-Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) Auguste Rodin is widely considered to be the greatest and most influential sculptor of the late nineteenth century. A passionate observer of the human body, he challenged certain conventions of the time and paved the way for modern sculpture. This film is a unique insight into the sculptor's personality and working methods, told through the artist's notebooks and letters as well as archive footage of him in his studio and at Meudon.
