Malawi (/məˈlɔːwi/, /məˈlɑːwi/ or /ˈmæləwi/; Chichewa: [maláβi] or [maláwi]), officially the Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in southeast Africa that was formerly known as Nyasaland. It is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique on the east, south and west. The country is separated from Tanzania and Mozambique by Lake Malawi. Malawi is over 118,000 km2 (45,560 sq mi) with an estimated population of 16,777,547 (July 2013 est.). Its capital is Lilongwe, which is also Malawi's largest city; the second largest is Blantyre and the third is Mzuzu. The name Malawi comes from the Maravi, an old name of the Nyanja people that inhabit the area. The country is also nicknamed "The Warm Heart of Africa".
Malawi is among the smallest countries in Africa. Lake Malawi takes about a third of Malawi's area.

Malawi's tourism industry is growing but at a slow pace. The director of tourism in the country says that the government will embark on new aggressive marketing campaigns next year. They will be seeking private partnerships to add the resources needed to support the expected boom. Soni Methu reports.
Cape Maclear (or Chembe) is a town in the Mangochi District of Malawi's Southern Region. The town, situated on the Nankumba Peninsula, is on the southern shore of Lake Malawi and is the busiest resort on Lake Malawi. Cape Maclear is close to the islands of Domwe and Thumbwe on Lake Malawi, and is in Lake Malawi National Park.
Poaching and wildlife trafficking have left some of Africa’s most iconic species endangered. The loss of the animals has cost African countries critical tourism revenue. But what if those national parks could get a second chance? The nonprofit African Parks has been trying to give just that. Lameck Masina reports for VOA from Liwonde National Park in southern Malawi which just welcomed some new inhabitants – four cheetahs relocated there by African Parks from South Africa. In June I had the privilege to cooperate with the tourism Board of Malawi and work with a number of Malawian tourist companies to promote their services online, through shooting videos for their circulation on Youtube and websites. I traveled with my friend David Martin around the Blantyre region and then joined a number of missionaries in the northern district of Livingstonia. This video is a combination of what happened behind the scenes when traveling to film for the organisations I had links with. Malawi is a country with so much beauty and potential. However Malawi is among the worlds least developed countries, with most of its economy based in agriculture. The people I met were wonderful and I hope that this trip will have helped at least someone in the long run. For more information...
The jewel in the crown of the country’s tourist attractions is Lake Malawi, “discovered” by the missionary-explorer Dr David Livingstone just over 150 years ago. Although totally landlocked, Malawi is not denied its “inland sea”. This vast body of freshwater fringed by beaches of golden sand is not only a scenic wonderland but it provides water sport opportunities for those looking for something beyond sun, sand and swimming. Its approximate dimensions are 365 miles north to south and 52 miles broad, hence the sobriquet: "the calendar lake". The Lake, in the north, is quite extraordinarily deep: 2300 ft/700 m, plunging well below sea level. This reflects the enormity of the natural faulting of the Great Rift Valley, which is the origin of the Lake. The width of the lake’s shorelands vary f...

Five years ago, Malawi was one of the 10 poorest countries in the world. And when President Bingu wa Mutharika stepped into office, the countrys economy was literally in tatters. It faced one of the worst food security situations in the world, there was no money in governments coffers, and countrys infrastructure was in a state. The first step on the Presidents to-do list was to rekindle relationships with the donor community.
Tanzania's Finance minister expects economic growth to reach 7.2 percent in 2016 up from 7 percent last year. Budget spending for the fiscal year starting in July will also rise 2.2 percent. Philip Mpango presented the document outlining budget plans for 2016/17 to parliament. And this will be the first indication of spending plans under the new administration of President John Magufuli, who was elected in October 2015. And in Malawi, the finance ministry says growth will pick to more than 4 percent in 2016 from about 3 percent last year as the country recovers from a drought caused by the El Nino weather pattern. Agriculture accounts for almost a third of Malawi's economy and provides a livelihood for 80 percent of the population. The kwacha has also been hit by a loss of donor funds be...

'In Focus' co-host Vincent Makori reports on Malawi's economy.
Malawi's economy is built on the backbone of the smallholder farmer. Many farmers, however face obstacles in growing their businesses. They lack access to bank accounts, and cash is risky. Feed the Future Malawi Mobile Project uses digital financial services to improve the Malawi agriculture value chain and farmers' economic resilience. USAID can help missions and partners identify specific challenges in value chains and corresponding DFS solutions to increase digital financial inclusion for smallholder farmers. Digital financial services help USAID projects run more efficiently and allow farmers to connect to the financial ecosystem, giving them tools to support their economic livelihoods long after the projects have ended. This video was produced by DDC International.
(www.abndigital.com) Britain is to buy up to 20 million pounds of Malawian currency to help stabilise the African state's economy following a major devaluation. ABN's Samantha Loring speaks with Jan Duvenage, Africa Research Analyst from Standard Bank Research, looking at the economic future of Malawi.
Despite government's efforts to boost the economic image of the country to global investors, economic freedom in Malawi remains poor. The legislatures have failed miserably to pass economic bills that would have made Malawi more competitive on the international trade arena. Even politicians have delayed the passing of 2008/9 budget, which has created a climate of uncertainty thus slowing down the donors' inflows. Due to this, overall economic freedom or rather call it freedom to do business, is ranked poorly. And the worst category for the country is freedom from corruption which is yet another reason that leads it to score poorly irrespective of high fiscal and labor freedom. Malawi's economic problems, high inflation government subsidies are not widespread. A weak rule of law further ...

Malawi officially became a democracy in 1994, but it was only 10 years on when the country really started firmly on its path of recovery. And part of that process was developing a sustainable financial sector.
The newly produced series ‘Aid or Trade?’ shows that aid is no longer about transferring money or shipping goods. It’s rather about setting up sustainable companies, while taking local constraints and the environment into account. An article in the Economist recently stated 'Western governments should open up to trade rather than just dish out aid … Autocracy, corruption and strife will not disappear overnight. But at a dark time for the world economy, Africa’s progress is a reminder of the transformative promise of growth.' This 5 episode-series 'Aid or Trade?' (5 x 14 minutes) shows an optimistic and nuanced perspective and portrays successful combinations and collaborations. The program highlights high-potential or successful initiatives: often collaboration between NGO’s, private, and...
In its current form, architecture is still a product of the Industrial Age, as is the idea that underpins it, namely that every change is an improvement. No profession is so imbued with the soap powder advertising optimism of ‘now better than ever’. But buildings also belong to the category of products on which financial capitalism thrived. Just as the millions of unpaid Facebook users ensure that Mark Zuckerberg is on his way to becoming the richest man in the universe, so all the (in this case paid) parties who make buildings, starting with architects, ensure that those who own the buildings become wealthier from it. At least, that’s how things worked until the recession. Because construction alone will not make you seriously rich. - Hans Ibelings, SHIFTS Nanne de Ru of Powerhouse Compa...

UCL is hosting an exhibition of photographs chronicling the university's involvement in a project to improve mother and and child health in rural Africa. The UCL Centre for International Health and Development established the MaiMwana Project in Malawi in 2002. Maternal mortality in the country is among the highest in the world and neonatal mortality is also high and accounts for almost half of all infant deaths. High mortality rates are partly a result of poor health care for mothers and their children thanks to a lack of drugs and supplies, high turnover of health service providers, variable service quality and lack of ownership by local communities. The MaiMwana Project aims to reduce mother and child mortality and morbidity by mobilising women's groups in local communities...

Health Poverty has a huge impact on the health of the population in Malawi. Poverty results in high levels of malnutrition, a lack of clean water, poor sanitation and a severe shortage or even absence of the most basic health care. Malawi's women and children are particularly affected: 183 in every 1000 children fail to reach their fifth birthday. In addition killer diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis and the HIV/AIDS pandemic also take an enormous toll on the lives and quality of life of families and communities across the country. MACS supports health care through: •Supporting 3 Anglican mission hospitals: St Anne's in Nkhotakota, St Luke's in Chilema and St Martin's at Malindi. •Each hospital is responsible for running rural health centres. There are 14 health centres i...

One of the major challenges in providing quality care for patients in low-resource settings like sub-Saharan Africa is the severe shortage of health workers. This situation is further compounded in rural areas, where health workers find themselves overwhelmed with long patient queues, inadequate training and no support. To help address this issue, Dignitas International, along with our partners in Malawi and at the University of Cape Town Lung Institute's Knowledge Translation Unit, worked to develop a toolkit and training model known as PALM+ (Practical Approach to Lung Health + HIV/AIDS in Malawi).

In 2012 we had the chance to visit South Africa to film bouldering in Rocklands. While bouldering there is amazing, we could not help but ask ourselves if there was good bouldering in other parts of Africa. With only sattelite imagery from Google Earth as information, we decided to bet on the small, overlooked country of Malawi. This Summer, climbers Mélissa Le Nevé and Benjamin Rueck flew to Malawi, knowing almost nothing about the country. Vacation travel video about destination Liwonde National Park in Malawi. The Liwonde National Park is situated in Central Africa and is Malawi’s most well known game reserve.Up until 1962 unrestricted poaching and hunting almost entirely eradicated the wildlife population of the region but in 1969 it was designated as a game reserve and, in 1973, as a national park. The Shire River is the region’s lifeline and more than two thousand hippos inhabit a forty kilometre section of the park. The park’s elephants are no longer slaughtered for their valuable tusks and their numbers, too, are increasing substantially. At the park’s watering holes groups of animals repeatedly gather to drink, an ideal opportunity to observe animals in the wild. Thankfully, the Liwonde National Park is now a natura...

Tracking the rare Black Rhino on foot at Liwonde National park in Malawi. Staying at Mvuu camp we got up at 4am and set off with our guide, gun bearer and professional tracker. After finding fresh footprints we came across a family of 3 Black Rhino's and were able to get up close for several minutes before something spooked them and they ran off. See www.malawianstyle.com for more adventures of this kind or email info@malawianstyle.com. Vacation travel video about destination Malawi in Africa. Malawi is the unknown Africa in the south-east of the Continent. A wild country between sea and highlands, a land of contrasts with amazing green mountains and high plateaus but most of all, Lake Malawi. In the north west and on the border with Zambia is the thousand square kilometre Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, home to more than two hundred elephants who, in small groups, visit the Kazuni Safari Camp on their way to the lake. In the Lake Kazuni area there are many hippos and crocodiles which although rarely seen from the shore can certainly be heard at night. The location of the small town of Nkhata Bay is quite spectacular, a large, sheltered bay, accessible via a steep slope. Small boats transport the local people to various loc...

They quickly discovered why the country is called "The Warm Heart of Africa". www.adidas.com/outdoor presents a VAST MOTION PICTURES production Producer, Director and Editor: Haroun Souirji Cinematographers: Haroun Souirji, Julie Guignier Sound Mix: Laurent Mollard Still Photography: Scott Noy www.facebook.com/VastMotionPictures
Last month I was working in Malawi to create a series of films for the Medical Research Council ahead of the 2016 International AIDS Conference in Durban. Keen to witness a true reflection of African culture and life, I took to the streets on my day off to capture a few shots that I hope give you an insight into the desperate conditions faced by millions of people in this effortlessly beautiful but distressingly impoverished country. No lake in the world contains such a diversified and distinct community of cichlid fishes as Lake Malawi - more than 800 species have been recorded. That 800 that evolved from only two species. The cichlids are among the fishes best designed to adapt to living in a tropical lake. All Malawi cichlids are endemic to this lake. There are even cichlids you just can find on one certain spot in the lake, like Pseudotropheus saulosi 05:14 at Taiwanee Reef. Apart of that sometimes more than 70 different species are to find at a single location. The most important factor that gives cichlids an avantage in a new lake is their ability to adapt rapidly to a new environment. Therefore you can find several types of feeding specializations. The Aulonocara species 00:50, with their large opening on the h...
A journey through Malawi & Tanzania. We began our journey in Park Station, Johannesburg. After a 44-hour bus trip we arrived in Blantyre – the administrative capital of Malawi. From Blantyre we journeyed by bus to the lake – first to Cape Maclear and then we headed north to Nkhata Bay. After a week by the lake we made our way over the border to Mbeya in Tanzania. From Mbeya we took the Tazara Train to Dar es Salaam where we ended our journey. Music by Vox Portent SoundCloud: soundcloud.com/voxportent

These are some shots from our first test run of the 5D on a 2009 trip to Africa. We picked up the camera 2 days before jumping on the plane from Perth. Our main camera was a Panasonic HPX502. There are a few issues with the 5D as a production camera, but we were impressed with what it could achieve considering its size and cost. All shots have been conformed from 30 to 25fps and no colour correction/grading has been applied. The purpose of the trip was to film a documentary not only to raise awareness about poverty and disease in that country, but also to show the positive effects of teaching people how to live more sustainably through the Food Security Projects being introduced by Global Concern. These shots where taken on the first part of our trip near Karonga, Lake Malawi in June 09....
The World Race: a journey that takes you to 11 countries in 11 months spreading the love, grace, and redemption power of Jesus across the nations. Month 5: Malawi. We partnered with African Bible College. We helped the teachers in preschool, elementary, and middle school. We ran a malaria clinic that 100 children visited--85 of whom tested positive for malaria and received medication. We fundraised the building of two homes (through the organization HOWMs - housing for orphans and widows of Malawi). We visited a local orphanage - Children of the Nations Orphanage - where I met Thomas and Caleb who forever stole my heart (they are featured in this video). We hung out with the middle school youth group and high school Young Life groups. And we went to villages and had dance parties.
The idea was to road trip from Alaska to Los Angeles, explore Southern and Central Africa, and tour South America on dirt bikes. Reaching a tipping point, my friend and I decided it was time. We booked a one-way ticket to Alaska, bought a used truck, and hit the road. This documents our journey for 6 months, over 3 continents, in 13 countries. Our travels stretched across the United States, Canada, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, South Africa, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. New York City's got a colder winter
Than where I live this time of year.
I wouldn't know cuz I missed my flight
And went out instead.
Handful of friends with some dynamite
Set to explode if you do it right.
Right off a cliff on a Saturday night.
Should have stayed at home.
I never would have met her there.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
I never knew about her.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
I should have listened to the first time
Mitch Ryder warned me
About the psycho with the blue dress on.
I tried to run but she's so so good at keeping up.
I had it coming or so they said.
Right off the pages of a gossip thread.
If only I had just stayed in bed.
Gonna sue Jet Blue for everything they put me through.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
I never knew about her.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
(Biggest mistake, biggest mistake)
I never knew about her.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
Wake me up from the nightmare I'm in.
She's a certified psycho and she's pulling me in.
Wake me up from the nightmare I'm in.
She's a certified psycho.
Can anybody help me out?
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
I never knew about her.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
[x2]
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
