At least 20,000 households in Japan have been advised to evacuate ahead of the storm’s arrival as rains and winds intensify across the country. Typhoon Lan has already brought heavy rain and wind to the pacific nation, while agencies have warned of flash floods and terrifying mudslides. It could be downgraded from its current Category 4 status but will still pound Japan with heavy rain and rough winds. Lan is set to wreak havoc as it sweeps along Japan’s south coast and over the Tokyo metropolitan area. The raging typhoon is fast approaching landfall in southeastern Japan where authorities are expecting strong winds, heavy rain and flooding. According to the Weather Channel, Typhoon Lan was last tracked about 500 miles southwest of Tokyo at around 10am BST. Tropical storm force winds up to 40mph extend several hundred miles from the storm’s centre. Powerful gusts of 59mph were recorded in Kochi on the southeastern coastline. On top of the powerful winds, as many as 19 inches of rainfall have been recorded in parts of Japan since Friday morning. The storm itself will hit the Tokyo bay area around 6am local time on Monday - around 9pm on Sunday night, UK time. The storm’s centreline forecast shows it is set to travel directly over Tokyo, an area which is home to around 30% of Japan’s population. It could cause significant disruption to the capital. It will also hit a US military base at Yokosuka before leaving Japanese shores on Monday afternoon, local time. Roads and bridges could be destroyed as streams and rivers become large, fast-moving waterways. Meteorologists have predicted rainfall of 6-12 inches across the country as Lan sweeps across Japan. Some communities could be inundated with more than 20 inches of rain. There could also be a violent storm surge east of where Lan is expected to make landfall in the south of Japan. Wind speeds are expected to reach 145-175km/h on the south coast, while gusts of 97-130km/h are also likely in Tokyo at the height of Typhoon Lan. The violent winds could blow the windows out of high-rise buildings, sending glass falling onto the streets from above. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled and rail services severely disrupted across Japan as harsh winds batter the country while the storm approaches. Some businesses have also taken precautions, with car company Toyota suspending operations at all of its assembly plants from Monday morning.
