An esplanade or promenade is a long, open, level area, usually next to a river or large body of water, where people may walk. The original meaning of esplanade was a large, open, level area outside fortress or city walls to provide clear fields of fire for the fortress' guns. In modern usage the space allows people to walk for recreational purposes; esplanades are often on sea fronts, and allow walking whatever the state of the tide, without having to walk on the beach. Esplanades became popular in Victorian times when it was fashionable to visit seaside resorts. A promenade, often abbreviated to '(the) Prom', was an area where people - couples and families especially - would go to walk for a while in order to 'be seen' and be considered part of 'society'.
In North America, esplanade has another meaning, being also a median (strip of raised land) dividing a roadway or boulevard. Sometimes they are just strips of grass, or some may have gardens and trees. Some roadway esplanades may be used as parks with a walking/jogging trail and benches.

On a local television dance show in Idaho in February 1958, local teens dance to one of the biggest dance crazes out of the late-1950's called The Stroll, which originated from American Bandstand. This dance was performed in a line formed with boys on one side and girls on the other, creating an isle between them. The boy and girl in the front of the line would meet up in the middle, grab hands and stroll their way down the line, as the other kids in the line would move their way up to the front using the same dance steps that the couple moving down the line would use, but move from side to side instead. When the first couple made their way down the line, another couple would meet in the middle and stroll down the isle. Today, a new version of The Stroll is done in the form of a group ...

The winners of the 2016 Back That Aztec Stroll Competition.
original song, oldie.
I know the road to your house
It's one I have never used
I have seen you many times now
Though we never have been introduced
Run through my dreams tonight
Take me for yourself
Stroll through my heart again
[Chorus]
I'm the one
I'm the one you need to use and abuse
I'm the one
I'm the one you need to use and abuse
I know all your facial features
Your habitual do's and don't's
I know all your daily travels
But will you love me, I don't know
Run through my dreams tonight
Take me for yourself
Stroll through my heart again
[Chorus]
I'm the one
I'm the one you need to use and abuse
I'm the one
I'm the one you need to use and abuse
[Chorus]
I'm the one
I'm the one you need to use and abuse
I'm the one
