Pretty Hate Machine

Pretty Hate Machine is the debut album by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, released October 20, 1989 on TVT Records. Pretty Hate Machine is compiled of reworked tracks from the Purest Feeling demo, as well as songs composed after its original recording. Three singles were released from the album, the most successful being "Head Like a Hole", which has become a staple in Nine Inch Nails live performances.

The album became one of the first independently released records to attain platinum certification. On May 12, 2003 the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the album triple platinum, indicating sales of three million copies in the United States. Although it was critically and commercially successful for an independent label, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails' only constant band member) feuded with TVT (the album's original label) during its promotion. The album was out of print from 1997 to 2005, because of the much publicized disagreement between Reznor and the record label. Rykodisc re-released the album worldwide in 2005, effectively putting the album back into print. A remastered version was released on November 22, 2010.

Nine Inch Nails

Nine Inch Nails (abbreviated NIN; stylized as NIИ) is an American industrial rock band, founded in 1988 by Trent Reznor in Cleveland, Ohio. As its main producer, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Reznor is the only official member of the group and remains solely responsible for its direction. Nine Inch Nails' music straddles a wide range of genres. After recording a new album, Reznor usually assembles a live band to perform with him. The touring band features a revolving lineup that often rearranges songs to fit a live setting. On stage, Nine Inch Nails often employs visual elements to accompany performances, which frequently include light shows.

Underground music audiences warmly received Nine Inch Nails in its early years. Reznor produced several highly influential records in the 1990s that achieved widespread popularity: many Nine Inch Nails songs became radio hits; and their entire catalog has reached record sales exceeding over 20 million albums worldwide, with 10 million sales certified in the United States alone. In 1997, Reznor appeared in Time magazine's list of the year's most influential people, and Spin magazine described him as "the most vital artist in music." In 2004, Rolling Stone placed Nine Inch Nails at 94 on its list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. Despite this acclaim, the band has had several feuds with the corporate side of the recording industry. In 2007, these corporate entanglements resulted in Reznor announcing that Nine Inch Nails would split from its label and release future material independently.

Something I Can Never Have

"Something I Can Never Have" is the fifth track on the Nine Inch Nails' 1989 debut album, Pretty Hate Machine. The song was used in the film Natural Born Killers.

Tom Breihan from Pitchfork Media gave a positive review to the song, stating that the song portrays "an absolute mastery" with "its haunted, minimal piano figure and a few hushed synth tones slowly, letting in sputtering static, faraway door-slam drums, and quiet little counter-melodies." Nevertheless, the initial reception of Pitchfork to the song was mixed, with being called as a "'Goodbye Blue Sky' rip-off" in a previous review by Rob Mitchum, in 2006.

A "deconstructed" version of the song was also included in the live album And All That Could Have Been. The accompanying live music video, with Jerome Dillon was also released.

This song has also been covered by the band Flyleaf for Underworld: Evolution OST. In July 2014, Tori Amos covered the song on her Unrepentant Geraldines Tour.

An inch (plural: inches; abbreviation or symbol: in or ″ – a double prime) is a unit of length in the imperial and United States customary systems of measurement. Historically an inch was also used in a number of other systems of units. Traditional standards for the exact length of an inch have varied in the past, but since July 1959 when the international yard was defined as 0.9144 metres, the international inch has been exactly 25.4 mm.
