An artist is turning heads behind the wheel of a street legal race car straight out of the Indianapolis 500. Dean Loucks, 50, bought the vehicle in 2007 and has since redesigned it into his very own drivable work of art. The battery powered Indy Car car weighs 1,200 lbs, about 300 lbs lighter than the average race car. It took Dean and his crew at The Art Of Design more than 1,000 hours to completely customise the car.

This Ariel Atom racing at the Hallett Race Track near Tulsa, OK was captured in Spring of 2012. It was competing in an open wheel racing class among several cars that were basically smaller versions of Indy cars. If you listen close you can hear the intake whine of the Ariel Atom. The Ariel Atom looked pretty much stock, except for a different set of wheels and sticky track tires.

I'm at Brands Hatch to have a go in a Formula 4 open-wheel, single-seat racecar, and before that it's some warm up laps in the BMW M4, but how do they compare?
There's no question the M4 is the 'faster' with 450hp to the 185hp of the F4 car, but when you factor in the aerodynamics, the grip levels, and the experience, how do they stack up?

Open-wheel car
An open-wheel car (formula car, or often single-seater car in British English) is a car with the wheels outside the car's main body, and usually having only one seat. Open-wheel cars contrast with street cars, sports cars, stock cars, and touring cars, which have their wheels below the body or fenders. Open-wheel cars are usually built specifically for racing, frequently with a higher degree of technological sophistication than in other forms of motor sport.
History
American racecar driver and constructor Ray Harroun was an early pioneer of the concept of a lightweight single-seater, open-wheel "monoposto" racecar. After working as a mechanic in the automotive industry, Harroun began competitive professional racing in 1906, winning the AAA National Championship in 1910. He was then hired by the Marmon Motor Car Company as chief engineer, charged with building a racecar intended to race at the very first Indianapolis 500, which he went on to win. He developed a revolutionary concept which would become the originator and forefather of the single-seater (i.e monoposto) racecar design.

Ariel Atom
The Ariel Atom is a road legal high performance sports car made by the Ariel Motor Company based in Crewkerne, Somerset, England and under licence in North America by TMI Autotech, Inc. at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia.
There have been seven Ariel Atom generations to date: Ariel Atom, Ariel Atom 2, Ariel Atom 3 (including the Ariel Atom 3 Mugen Limited Edition and Honda Racing Edition - of which only 1 was made) Ariel Atom 3.5, Ariel Atom 3S, Ariel Spec:Race Atom, and Ariel Atom 500 V8 Limited Edition (only 25 to be made). The current models are the Ariel Atom 3 (US), 3.5, the more powerful 3.5R, the 3S (US), the Spec:Race Atom (US), and the limited production Ariel Atom 500 V8 with a 500 bhp (373 kW; 507 PS) V8 engine
The Ariel Atom features a prominently visible chassis (i.e., an exoskeleton, no roof or windows, a small optional windscreen) and a drag coefficient of 0.40.
Design origins
The Atom began as a student project by Coventry University transport design student, Niki Smart. Known then as the LSC (Lightweight Sports Car), it was developed at the university in 1996 with input and funding from various automotive industry members, including British Steel and TWR. Ariel Motor Company boss Simon Saunders was a senior lecturer whose responsibility for the project was primarily as financial manager and design critic for Smart, whom he described as "The best all-round design student I've ever seen." The car was first shown publicly at the British International Motor Show at the NEC in Birmingham in October 1996.

An artist is turning heads behind the wheel of a street legal race car straight out of the Indianapolis 500. Dean Loucks, 50, bought the vehicle in 2007 and has since redesigned it into his very own drivable work of art. The battery powered Indy Car car weighs 1,200 lbs, about 300 lbs lighter than the average race car. It took Dean and his crew at The Art Of Design more than 1,000 hours to completely customise the car.

An artist is turning heads behind the wheel of a street legal race car straight out of the Indianapolis 500. This Ariel Atom racing at the Hallett Race Track near Tulsa, OK was captured in Spring of 2012. It was competing in an open wheel racing class among several cars that were basically smaller versions of Indy cars. If you listen close you can hear the intake whine of the Ariel Atom. The Ariel Atom looked pretty much stock, except for a different set of wheels and sticky track tires.

I used default setup and recorded the first lap I completed with the car so this isn't a hotlap video it's just a video to show all the open wheel cars and how differently they handle.
