Days are lengthening - and not just because of the solstice

Winter's depths have been plumped according to the clocks but the worst of the season's chill is almost certainly ahead. Wednesday marked the winter solstice, with Sydney's day lasting 9 hours, 53 minutes and 51 seconds, or about one second shorter than the days either side, according to timeanddate.com.
