The collapse of Yugoslavia twenty-six years ago unleashed brutal wars and a humanitarian catastrophe. Today, the delicate order in the Balkans is threatened yet again. Serbia aspires to join the European Union, yet also seeks to strengthen its ties with Russia, despite the current strains on the relationship between Moscow and the West. Relations between Kosovo and Serbia are tense. Unable to embrace necessary reforms, Bosnia is on the edge again, while Macedonia and Montenegro suffer from deep divisions. Continued recovery and peace in the Balkans will require sustained Western engagement and the prospect of EU integration. However, Europe is not in the mood for enlargement, and its authority in the Balkans is weakening. Meanwhile, Russian influences and radical Islamist ideology are spreading in the region.

"The Western Balkan in the EU: Perspectives of a Region in Europe?", Reflection Forum organised by CIFE, the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI), Rome, the Centre Franco-Autrichien pour le Rapprochement en Europe (ÖFZ), Vienna, in Trieste. 26 & 27 June 2017.
This second reflection forum, dedicated to regional cooperation, will contribute to broadening the reflection about enlargement and the Western Balkans among the policy community, the media and the general public. Three areas of reflection have been delineated: the resurgence of bilateral and regional tensions, the gap between regional cooperation in repressive and enabling security matters and the pitfalls of gendered models of economic development. The reflection forum and reflection conference will set the basis for the elaboration of reflection papers, disseminated across the policy community. They will be followed up by a new series of outreach events (panel discussions), to be organised throughout the Western Balkans as well as in the Berlin Process countries in autumn and spring 2017-2018.

Besa Shahini believes that despite the grim picture for the near future of the Western Balkans, there are opportunities today for a transformation that will make the next decade work for the region. In her TEDxTirana talk she insists however, that for this to happen, people need to believe that change is possible.
Besa is a policy researcher and analyst from Kosovo. She works with the Berlin-based think tank, European Stability Initiative (ESI), on the Europeanization of the Western Balkans as well as writes a regular column for an online newspaper in Kosovo.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson stated from Washington DC, Tuesday, that neither US President Donald Trump nor he himself were "happy" about the Congress' decision to approve a new package of sanctions against Russia. However, he added that Trump would likely sign the bill.
Tillerson noted that "neither the president nor I were very happy" about the Congress decision. He went on to say, "We were clear that we didn't think it was going to be helpful to our efforts, but that's the decision they made, they made it in a very overwhelming way. I think the president accepts that, and all indications are he will sign that bill and then we'll just work with it."
The US secretary of state stressed that the decision "can't let it take us off track of trying to restore the relationship" with Moscow.
In July, the US Congress passed the bill that would impose new economic sanctions against Russia, targeting mining, defence, and shipping industries, among others. US President Donald Trump must first sign off on the bill before it is fully implemented.
In response, Moscow stated that the US must cut the number of diplomatic staff working in the country to 455 personnel by September 1, and halt their usage of summer houses and embassy storage facilities in Moscow by August 1.
US Vice President Mike Pence said Russia has been working to "destabilise" the Western Balkans and to break up the region from the West, when speaking to Balkans leaders at the Adriatic Charter Summit in Podgorica on Wednesday.
Pence said that the future of Montenegro lies with the West and accused Moscow of planning an attempted coup in Montenegro in October to stop it from joining NATO. Russia has since dismissed such claims and Montenegro became the 29th member of NATO in June.
Pence also noted that US President Donald Trump "has called clearly on Russia to cease its destabilising activities. And I can assure you, the United States of America rejects any attempt to use force, threats or intimidation in this region or beyond. The Western Balkans have the right to decide your own future, and that is your right alone."
Pence arrived in Montenegro as part of an Eastern European tour, which was intended to demonstrate Washington's commitment to its security.

Balkans
The Balkan Peninsula and the Balkans is a peninsula and a cultural area in Southeast Europe with different and disputed borders. The region takes its name from the Balkan Mountains that stretch from the east of Serbia to the Black Sea at the east of Bulgaria.
The Balkans meet the Adriatic Sea on the northwest, Ionian Sea on the southwest, the Mediterranean and Aegean Sea on the south and southeast, and the Black Sea on the east and northeast. The highest point of the Balkans is Mount Musala 2,925 metres (9,596 ft) on the Rila mountain range in Bulgaria.
Name
Antiquity and early Middle Ages
From Antiquity through the Middle Ages, the Balkan Mountains had been called by the local Thracian name Haemus. According to Greek mythology, the Thracian king Haemus was turned into a mountain by Zeus as a punishment and the mountain has remained with his name. A reverse name scheme has also been suggested. D. Dechev considers that Haemus (Αἷμος) is derived from a Thracian word *saimon, 'mountain ridge'. A third possibility is that "Haemus" (Αἵμος) derives from the Greek word "haema" (αἵμα) meaning 'blood'. The myth relates to a fight between Zeus and the monster/titan Typhon. Zeus injured Typhon with a thunder bolt and Typhon's blood fell on the mountains from which they got their name.

The Western

The Western Hotel and Casino was a hotel and casino in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. The 8,925 sq ft (829.2 m2) casino is owned by the Barrick Gaming and operated by Navegante and The Tamares Group.
The Western was the lowest rung of Jackie Gaughan's low-roller casino empire that included the Las Vegas Club, The Plaza, the Gold Spike and El Cortez.
History
The Western opened in 1970 as the Western Hotel & Bingo Parlor and was owned by Jackie Gaughan and Mel Exber. At its opening, The Western was the world's largest bingo parlor with 1,020 seats.
Jackie Gaughan sold the hotel to Barrick Gaming in March 2004. The plans called for redeveloping the Western Hotel as a Latino destination resort. At the time, the AP said about the property, "On a stretch of despair that tourists in Las Vegas seldom see, the Western Hotel-Casino stands out as a beacon for the broke and nearly broken".
In 2005, The Tamares Group acquired total control of the hotel and casino through a lease from Barrick. In 2010 the hotel portion completely closed and redevelopment still remains uncertain to this day.

Mike Pence
Michael Richard "Mike" Pence (born June 7, 1959) is an American politician and attorney who has served as the 50th Governor of Indiana since 2013. A member of the Republican Party, he previously represented Indiana's 6th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 2001 to 2013 and served as Chairman of the House Republican Conference from 2009 to 2011.
Pence was mentioned as a possible candidate for President of the United States in 2008 and 2012. In September 2010, Pence was the top choice for President in a straw poll conducted by the Value Voters Summit.
Early life, education, and family
Pence was born in Columbus, Indiana, one of six children of Nancy Jane (née Cawley) and Edward J. Pence, Jr., who ran a string of gas stations. His maternal family was of Irish Catholic descent. He was named after his grandfather, Richard Michael Cawley, a Chicago bus driver who came to the United States from Ireland through Ellis Island. He graduated from Columbus North High School in 1977. Pence earned a B.A. in History from Hanover College in 1981 and a J.D. from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1986. While at Hanover, Pence joined the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, serving as his chapter's president.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson stated from Washington DC, Tuesday, that neither US President Donald Trump nor he himself were "happy" about the Congress' decision to approve a new package of sanctions against Russia. However, he added that Trump would likely sign the bill. Tillerson noted that "neither the president nor I were very happy" about the Congress decision. He went on to say, "We were clear that we didn't think it was going to be helpful to our efforts, but that's the decision they made, they made it in a very overwhelming way. I think the president accepts that, and all indications are he will sign that bill and then we'll just work with it." Relations between Kosovo and Serbia are tense. Unable to embrace necessary reforms, Bosnia is on the edge again, while Macedonia and Montenegro suffer from deep divisions. Continued recovery and peace in the Balkans will require sustained Western engagement and the prospect of EU integration. However, Europe is not in the mood for enlargement, and its authority in the Balkans is weakening. Meanwhile, Russian influences and radical Islamist ideology are spreading in the region.

This second reflection forum, dedicated to regional cooperation, will contribute to broadening the reflection about enlargement and the Western Balkans among the policy community, the media and the general public. Three areas of reflection have been delineated: the resurgence of bilateral and regional tensions, the gap between regional cooperation in repressive and enabling security matters and the pitfalls of gendered models of economic development. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson stated from Washington DC, Tuesday, that neither US President Donald Trump nor he himself were "happy" about the Congress' decision to approve a new package of sanctions against Russia. However, he added that Trump would likely sign the bill.
Tillerson noted that "neither the president nor I were very happy" about the Congress decision. He went on to say, "We were clear that we didn't think it was going to be helpful to our efforts, but that's the decision they made, they made it in a very overwhelming way. I think the president accepts that, and all indications are he will sign that bill and then we'll just work with it."
The US secretary of state stressed that the decision "can't let it take us off track of trying to restore the relationship" with Moscow.
In July, the US Congress passed the bill that would impose new economic sanctions against Russia, targeting mining, defence, and shipping industries, among others. US President Donald Trump must first sign off on the bill before it is fully implemented.
In response, Moscow stated that the US must cut the number of diplomatic staff working in the country to 455 personnel by September 1, and halt their usage of summer houses and embassy storage facilities in Moscow by August 1.

Pence said that the future of Montenegro lies with the West and accused Moscow of planning an attempted coup in Montenegro in October to stop it from joining NATO. Russia has since dismissed such claims and Montenegro became the 29th member of NATO in June.
Pence also noted that US President Donald Trump "has called clearly on Russia to cease its destabilising activities. And I can assure you, the United States of America rejects any attempt to use force, threats or intimidation in this region or beyond. The Western Balkans have the right to decide your own future, and that is your right alone."
Pence arrived in Montenegro as part of an Eastern European tour, which was intended to demonstrate Washington's commitment to its security.

Most people think and assume traveling is expensive. And when they see or meet someone who travels extensively without a job, they think they are spending a massive load of money. Or have a great job while they are traveling. The thing is, travel can be really cheap. It can be as cheap as you want it to be. The thing you may have to sacrifice is comfort and luxury. But in doing so, you find yourself having some incredibly rich experiences.
In this video, I show how I've managed to save thousands and buy myself more time across the Balkans in Southern Europe. For starters, I've managed to accrue over 150,000 miles across many airlines miles programs paying only $6 for a flight to Europe. This is called travel hacking, where you strategically accrue many miles for flights and pay almost nothing to fly.
As far as lodging goes, I've always aimed to use Couchsurfing first. Couchsurfing is basically the Facebook for travelers. You travel in another town ask for a place to stay, they welcome you in, you surf their couch to sleep, and you make yourself a friend in the process while learning about your destination faster.
If that doesn't work, I chose from several different options. First is usually booking.com since it has the most options to choose from and most of the time you don't have to put down a credit card. Next is Hostelworld if there are hostels in to pay for a bed instead of a whole room. And lastly, Airbnb. I love Airbnb because the stays are all very unique and personal. It's like a home away from home. Then there is buying a tent and camping out if it's legal, or illegal :)
Next is how to get around. No matter where you go in the world, there is always a means to get somewhere. There are always buses going somewhere and as much as I hate buses, they are always there. Next is my favorite travel option, Trains. I've always loved trains and just simply putting your bag away, sitting down, and watching the Earth go by while you ride on the tracks. There aren't in every single country you go to, but when there are trains, I'm all about it. My favorite option and something I have discovered in Romania is hitchhiking. Hitchhiking is common in Europe and people do it all around the world. You hit the edge of town, find a safe place on the side of the road and on ramp, and be patient. Next thing you know you are catching a ride with someone who you can chat with and who knows, have a beer with or make a lifelong friend.
Hitchhiking has changed my views in travel because I now know that I can do whatever I want, without limiting myself to a not so awesome train and bus schedule. There have been very few times where I have been unlucky but many times where I have had incredible experiences.
Eating local cuisine is a very important part of travel. But unfortunately, tourist traps ruin it for budget travelers since the prices to eat are incredibly unreasonable. That's why I usually walk around town to scope out whats affordable first. If I have a kitchen, I'll buy groceries. And if all that fails, then I will find a cheap restaurant.
Currency exchange can be a hassle, especially if you are aware of the terrible rates that can cost too much. I have pin and chip technology on my miles accrual cards which are useful all over Europe. I earn miles in the process. When I acquire money, I use TD bank for large money withdrawals and only get charged a $3 ATM fee. For small conversions, I will go to an exchange shop and try to go to a place with a decent exchange rate.
Lastly, when you travel on a budget so much, sometimes you may miss out on a popular tourist attraction. On my journey, I missed out on visiting the Hagia Sofia museum in Istanbul and renting a car to visit an abandoned building in Bulgaria. If you run into a situation where you are not sure if you want to spend more than a certain amount. Ask yourself, will I regret not doing this later?
So you've figured out how to travel on a budget and it's all working out for you. But one last thing you need to do and never forget. HAVE FUN :)

Even though the scars of the past are still visible all over the city this is now a place where different cultures and religions are living together peacefully. Churches, mosques and synagogues can be found almost next to each other which is why Sarajevo is often called “European Jerusalem”.
One of our favorite Things to do in Sarajevo was walking around the beautiful old town. We recommend trying the local food, checking out the works of the craftsmen and drinking a typical bosnian coffee.

While most of us were still hung up on grunge, the republics of the former Yugoslavia spent the early 90s hung up on seceding into their own countries and mass-murdering people over infinitesimal ethnic differences. And the mid 90s. And the late 90s. To commemorate 12 years without a major attempted genocide, we decided to rent a Yugo and take a road trip through the Balkans to see what's going on and try to wrap our thinkers around what was up with all that ethnic cleansin'.
Our first stop: A nostalgic amusement park in northern Serbia that recreates Marshall Tito's Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia with startling accuracy and grimness.

Turbofolk is tacky, high-octane techno with melodies based loosely on traditional Balkan folk music. Which would make it the same as popular music in pretty much any country in Europe if it wasn't also paid for by the Serbian and Croatian mafias (sometimes the Montenegrin) and served as the soundtrack to some of the most heinous war crimes since the Holocaust. It's a bit of a trippy scene. The Madonna of Turbofolk, Ceca Ražnatović, is currently under house arrest for embezzlement and hiding a cache of assault rifles in her basement. So we caught up with her protege, Goga Sekulic, a heavily-bronzed tower of woman best known for her hits "Gaćice [Panties]" and "Seksi Businessman [Sexy Businessman]" and went out for some Tuesday-night turboclubbing in Belgrade.

Bulgaria has so much more sights than just the beaches like golden sands and sunny beach - it also has more things to do than just drinking cheap alcohol and joining the parties:
The ancient towns of Sozopol and Nesebar are amongst the oldest cities of Bulgaria and are very nice located - totally worth a visit!
Varna is one of the biggest cities of the country and therefore a bit more hustling and bustling, but if you head out of town e.g. to Raponggi Beach you also find some quiet spots to relax.
Especially the coast north of Varna with it's cliffs is very stunning, the following spots have been our favorite places at the black sea coast:
- Cape Kaliakra
- Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort
- Botanical Garden of Balchik

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson stated from Washington DC, Tuesday, that neither US President Donald Trump nor he himself were "happy" about the Congress' decision to approve a new package of sanctions against Russia. However, he added that Trump would likely sign the bill.
Tillerson noted that "neither the president nor I were very happy" about the Congress decision. He went on to say, "We were clear that we didn't think it was going to be helpful to our efforts, but that's the decision they made, they made it in a very overwhelming way. I think the president accepts that, and all indications are he will sign that bill and then we'll just work with it."
The US secretary of state stressed that the decision "can't let it take us off track of trying to restore the relationship" with Moscow.
In July, the US Congress passed the bill that would impose new economic sanctions against Russia, targeting mining, defence, and shipping industries, among others. US President Donald Trump must first sign off on the bill before it is fully implemented.
In response, Moscow stated that the US must cut the number of diplomatic staff working in the country to 455 personnel by September 1, and halt their usage of summer houses and embassy storage facilities in Moscow by August 1.
US Vice President Mike Pence said Russia has been working to "destabilise" the Western Balkans and to break up the region from the West, when speaking to Balkans leaders at the Adriatic Charter Summit in Podgorica on Wednesday.
Pence said that the future of Montenegro lies with the West and accused Moscow of planning an attempted coup in Montenegro in October to stop it from joining NATO. Russia has since dismissed such claims and Montenegro became the 29th member of NATO in June.
Pence also noted that US President Donald Trump "has called clearly on Russia to cease its destabilising activities. And I can assure you, the United States of America rejects any attempt to use force, threats or intimidation in this region or beyond. The Western Balkans have the right to decide your own future, and that is your right alone."
Pence arrived in Montenegro as part of an Eastern European tour, which was intended to demonstrate Washington's commitment to its security.
