Oxford is just 58 minutes away from London Paddington Station and about the same by car, but on Saturdays parking is pretty difficult. My train was completely packed and found myself squeezed into the corner with camera and tripod for the whole journey.
It was however well worth the effort, with one of the finest days of the year so far. It had been some time since I had a good walk around the medieval city of Oxford with its university buildings, so I'd been planning the trip for the whole week. Shame I botched the white balance, there's a green tint on the video, which gives it a certain "Je ne sais quoi?" but hey.

Oxford
Oxford (/ˈɒksfərd/) is a city in the South East region of England and the county town of Oxfordshire. With a population of 159,994 it is the 52nd largest city in the United Kingdom, and one of the fastest growing and most ethnically diverse. Oxford has a broad economic base. Its industries include motor manufacturing, education, publishing and a large number of information technology and science-based businesses, some being academic offshoots. The city is known worldwide as the home of the University of Oxford, the oldest university in the English-speaking world. Buildings in Oxford demonstrate notable examples of every English architectural period since the late Saxon period. Oxford is known as the "city of dreaming spires", a term coined by poet Matthew Arnold.
History
Medieval
Oxford was first settled in Saxon times and was initially known as "Oxenaforda", meaning "Ford of the Oxen" (according to the English Place-Name Society, who base their result on a passing reference in Florence of Worcester's work "Chronicon ex chronicis"); fords were more common than bridges at that time. It began with the establishment of a river crossing for oxen around AD 900. In the 10th century, Oxford became an important military frontier town between the kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex and was on several occasions raided by Danes.

Oxford spelling (or Oxford English Dictionary spelling) is the spelling used by the Oxford University Press (OUP), including in its Oxford English Dictionary (OED), and by other publishers who are "etymology conscious", according to Merriam-Webster.
Oxford spelling is best known for its preference of the suffix -ize in words like organize and recognize, versus the -ise endings that are more common in current British English usage. The spelling affects about 200 verbs and is favoured because -ize corresponds more closely to the Greek root, -izo, of most -ize verbs. In addition to the OUP, British dictionary publishers that use Oxford spelling include Cassell, Collins and Longman. The University of Oxford (informally Oxford University or simply Oxford) is a collegiate research university located in Oxford, England. While having no known date of foundation, there is evidence of teaching as far back as 1096, making it the oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world's second-oldest surviving university. It grew rapidly from 1167 when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. After disputes between students and Oxford townsfolk in 1209, some academics fled northeast to Cambridge where they established what became the University of Cambridge. The two "ancient universities" are frequently jointly referred to as "Oxbridge".
The university is made up of a variety of institutions, including 38 constituent colleges and a full range of academic departments which are organised into four divisions. All the colleges are self-governing institutions as part of the university, each controlling its own membership and with its own internal structure and activities. Being a city university, it does not have a main campus; instead, all the buildings and facilities are scattered throughout the city centre. Most undergraduate teaching at Oxford is organised around weekly tutorials at the self-governing colleges and halls, supported by classes, lectures and laboratory work provided by university faculties and departments.

'Nowhere Near Here' is a stop motion animation that uses a combination of light with stencils and long exposure photography to tell the story of a dog running around the city at night, doing whatever a dog does. The animation was first exhibited at the The Herbert, in Coventry, on the 7th October 2010. With well over 300 hours in the making, more than 200 stencils involved and too many cold nights spent outside on my knees getting the shots, I am very happy (and relieved) to finally share this with you. Through the course of shooting 'Nowhere Near Here', I have dealt with curious drunks, a dog almost peeing on the camera (the irony is not lost on me, haha), the endlessly suspicious police and even someone nearly running off with a tripod. Oxford is just 58 minutes away from London Paddington Station and about the same by car, but on Saturdays parking is pretty difficult. My train was completely packed and found myself squeezed into the corner with camera and tripod for the whole journey. It was however well worth the effort, with one of the finest days of the year so far. It had been some time since I had a good walk around the medieval city of Oxford with its university buildings, so I'd been planning the trip for the whole week. Shame I botched the white balance, there's a green tint on the video, which gives it a certain "Je ne sais quoi?" but hey.

Oxford is just 58 minutes away from London Paddington Station and about the same by car, but on Saturdays parking is pretty difficult. My train was completely packed and found myself squeezed into the corner with camera and tripod for the whole journey.
It was however well worth the effort, with one of the finest days of the year so far. It had been some time since I had a good walk around the medieval city of Oxford with its university buildings, so I'd been planning the trip for the whole week. Shame I botched the white balance, there's a green tint on the video, which gives it a certain "Je ne sais quoi?" but hey.

Absolutely! I highly recommend 'Broadchurch' (https://goo.gl/5qdWbJ) which is a FANTASTIC crime drama based in a small village in the South of England. The actors are brilliant and it has won lots of awards!

If life is a catwalk, run like a dog.
'Nowhere Near Here' is a stop motion animation that uses a combination of light with stencils and long exposure photography to tell the story of a dog running around the city at night, doing whatever a dog does. The animation was first exhibited at the The Herbert, in Coventry, on the 7th October 2010.
With well over 300 hours in the making, more than 200 stencils involved and too many cold nights spent outside on my knees getting the shots, I am very happy (and relieved) to finally share this with you. Through the course of shooting 'Nowhere Near Here', I have dealt with curious drunks, a dog almost peeing on the camera (the irony is not lost on me, haha), the endlessly suspicious police and even someone nearly running off with a tripod.
This is street art, this is life and thank you for watching.

Oxford, some 50 miles west of London, is nicknamed the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’. The town revolves around the world-renowned university. Established in the 12th century, there are more than 30 Oxford colleges. Situated in the medieval centre of Oxford – here are three of the most popular.
Christ Church - founded by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in 1524. Its former students include no less than 13 British prime ministers. With its imposing Tom Tower, (the upper part of which was designed by former student Sir Christopher Wren) and Oxford’s greatest quad, the college has also found recent fame as a location for Harry Potter films.
14th century New College was the first college in Oxford for undergraduates – with an impressive chapel and hall, it is a fine example of the Perpendicular Gothic style.
As you walk along New College Lane, look up at the steeped Bridge of Sighs linking the two halves of Hertford College to New College.
Magdalen, founded in 1458, is one of the wealthiest and most beautiful of Oxford's colleges. It has a reputation as a writer’s college. Look out for its fantastic cloisters.
Two other must sees are the Bodleian Library, founded by Sir Thomas Bodley in 1565 and the Radcliffe Camera, one of the city's most photographed buildings.
Oxford also boasts some spectacular museums – amongst the best are the Ashmolean – established in 1683 it is Britain's oldest public museum and The Pitt Rivers anthropological museum.
Oxford is a vibrant city, with a wide selection of shops, hotels and restaurants. Wander through the High Street, past the Carfax Tower (with city views), make a detour to medieval Oxford Castle, continue past the Covered Market towards the Botanic Garden and the beautiful river Thames, called the Isis.

Oxford, some 50 miles west of London, is nicknamed the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’. The town revolves around the world-renowned university. Established in the 12th century, there are more than 30 Oxford colleges. Situated in the medieval centre of Oxford – here are three of the most popular.
Christ Church - founded by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in 1524. Its former students include no less than 13 British prime ministers. With its imposing Tom Tower, (the upper part of which was designed by former student Sir Christopher Wren) and Oxford’s greatest quad, the college has also found recent fame as a location for Harry Potter films.
14th century New College was the first college in Oxford for undergraduates – with an impressive chapel and hall, it is a fine example of the Perpendicular Gothic style.
As you walk along New College Lane, look up at the steeped Bridge of Sighs linking the two halves of Hertford College to New College.
Magdalen, founded in 1458, is one of the wealthiest and most beautiful of Oxford's colleges. It has a reputation as a writer’s college. Look out for its fantastic cloisters.
Two other must sees are the Bodleian Library, founded by Sir Thomas Bodley in 1565 and the Radcliffe Camera, one of the city's most photographed buildings.
Oxford also boasts some spectacular museums – amongst the best are the Ashmolean – established in 1683 it is Britain's oldest public museum and The Pitt Rivers anthropological museum.
Oxford is a vibrant city, with a wide selection of shops, hotels and restaurants. Wander through the High Street, past the Carfax Tower (with city views), make a detour to medieval Oxford Castle, continue past the Covered Market towards the Botanic Garden and the beautiful river Thames, called the Isis.

Join our host Brianna Barnes as she visits Britain’s exciting capital city, which seamlessly blends its rich and varied history with a modern day culture, perpetually evolving into the London of today. Beginning her tour at the iconic Buckingham Palace, home to the Queen of England and various Royal Family members, we see the Changing of the Guard. Next Brianna heads over to the National Gallery, home to over 2,000 paintings and one of Europe’s finest collections of art. Day two and our intrepid host heads to the East End to check out the fashionable Spitalfields Market, and samples a British favourite ‘Bangers & Mash’ served at the nearby S&M; café. Brianna next takes a tour of London’s street art and checks out some of the modern-day masterpieces by famous British street-artist, Banksy, and his contemporaries.
After breakfasting at London’s most famous hotel, The Ritz, Brianna heads to Mayfair to check out some of London’s finest retail establishments such as John Lobbs, the boot makers and Lock & Co Hatters - the oldest hat-makers in London. Moving on to Covent Garden we take a look inside the London Transport Museum - home to over 370,000 objects concerning urban transport and London’s wealth of transportation history. Brianna then catches a ride on a heritage routemaster bus, which passes some of London’s most historic landmarks. Day four and using one of the oldest, and most popular ways to get around London, Brianna jumps on a bicycle and heads along the canal from Regent’s Park all the way to the Olympic Stadium via Camden Lock.
Taking advantage of the well connected transportation links in and out of London, Brianna heads out on a day trip by rail to one of the many historic towns which are less than an hour’s ride away. Brianna takes a day-trip to Oxford, home to one of the most famous universities in the world, and takes a tour of the largest of all the Oxford colleges, Christchurch, with its awe-inspiring architecture and beautiful surroundings. After ascending to the top of Carfax Tower and checking out the Covered Market, Brianna takes part in the most traditional way to see Oxford, via punt, and finds out just how easy punting along the river is.
Back in London, and back on the river Thames, Brianna goes speeding off down the river on a boat to Greenwich to check out the Royal Naval College and the National Maritime Museum which houses the very costume Lord Admiral Nelson wore in the Battle of Trafalgar. We then head over to the Tate Modern, a magnificent converted power station housing contemporary exhibitions of art dating from 1900 to today. After a day trip spent in Buckinghamshire visiting Cliveden House – a stately home which sits on the Thames, we take a trip to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, home to the biggest botanical collection in the world before checking out the delights of 1,000 hectare area Richmond Park via horseback. Brianna rounds off the day in the Victoria Inn, famous for being the smallest pub in Richmond.
In her final day in London, Brianna takes part in the annual Thames Festival and checks out the festivities, which include a feast on Southwark Bridge, carnival style dancing, and a night time firework display.

When 20th century begun, a major shift took place in science. Scientists started making experiments with an unprecedented precision. Fiddle with single particles, atoms, and electrons.
And they got bewildered. Small objects seemed to have a sort of fuzzy properties. What's more - the very act of observing them, of measuring them, seemed to bring them to live, excavate them from a vague domain.
Equations of quantum mechanics were beautiful. They did generate astonishingly correct answers for mind boggling questions about the exotic micro world. But there was a price to pay. Objective reality had to go.

When 20th century begun, a major shift took place in science. Scientists started making experiments with an unprecedented precision. Fiddle with single particles, atoms, and electrons.
And they got bewildered. Small objects seemed to have a sort of fuzzy properties. What's more - the very act of observing them, of measuring them, seemed to bring them to live, excavate them from a vague domain.
Equations of quantum mechanics were beautiful. They did generate astonishingly correct answers for mind boggling questions about the exotic micro world. But there was a price to pay. Objective reality had to go.

WASTEBAND by PATRÍCIA PORTELA
"To lose is a matter of method" – Braque
Waistband : strip of cloth that forms the waist of a garment, esp. at the top of trousers or a skirt
(in Oxford dictionary)
Wasteband : strip of time that shapes your days, by extending the waiting moments instead of the action
ones, creating a bigger possibility of accidents and collateral effects in lives that have been over
programmed.
How can you be virtual without being digital?
Wasteband is a virtual performance for 1 astronaut/salesman, 1 musician, and 1 power point, where performers and spectators seat together around a table where vertical images are being projected.
Based on the coincidental fact that both a Chinese ritual and scientific theories prove that the moon will
soon fall on a beach full of frogs on the exact date we perform.
Following the anxieties of Sergei Krikalev at the Mir while waiting to be brought back to Earth, this is a
performance about waiting, wishing and wasting.

SYNOPSIS
When 20th century begun, a major shift took place in science. Scientists started making experiments with an unprecedented precision. Fiddle with single particles, atoms, and electrons.
And they got bewildered. Small objects seemed to have a sort of fuzzy properties. What's more - the very act of observing them, of measuring them, seemed to bring them to live, excavate them from a vague domain.
Equations of quantum mechanics were beautiful. They did generate astonishingly correct answers for mind boggling questions about the exotic micro world. But there was a price to pay. Objective reality had to go.

In Chinese ancestral portraits, it was a common practice for subjects holding titles in the Qing court to be depicted in their official robes. There were nine ranks for civilian officials, each represented by a different bird embroidered on a rank badge sewn at the front of the robe. Wee Boon Teck, the second generation patriarch of the family at 157 Neil Road, was conferred a fourth rank represented by a wild goose on the badge. What does this symbol mean in Asian art and culture?
The wild goose or hamsa has been a popular motif in Asia for over 2000 years, featuring in both Hindu and Buddhist art (gazing down at a reclining Vishnu, at Amaravati, on the cross-bars of Buddhist thrones), cave murals and paintings (such as those at Ajanta and Ellora), ancient Indian textiles, as well as figuring in some of the region's best known classical stories, such as the Mahabharata and the Hamsajataka. They appear on Tibetan sutra covers, Kashmiri tiles, as well as Thai royal barges. One of China's most famous pagodas is called 'The Wild Goose Pagoda'. But why?
This was the question our speaker pondered last year, a question that took her on, in her own words, her "wild goose chase". Join us as we travel together with her on this journey discovering the meaning and symbolism of the wild goose, its many forms, and the role it has played in South, Southeast and East Asian religious art.
Patricia Bjaaland Welch, M.A., is a former Lecturer in Asian Religion and Philosophy (College of Liberal Arts, Boston University) and an independent researcher and author of several books including Oxford University Press' Chinese New Year and Tuttle's Chinese Art: A Guide to Motifs and Visual Imagery. She is currently a resident in Singapore, where she is an active docent and lecturer, and a part-time resident in Bangkok.
Prof. John Miksic grew up in western New York State, where he found stone arrowheads made by the Iroquois on his grandfather's farm. In 1976 he participated in his first archaeological expedition, to northern Canada to study Inuit. The next year he joined the Peace Corps and was sent to Malaysia, whereupon he was entranced by the archaeological potential of this region. He obtained his Ph.D. from Cornell in 1979 after studying an ancient port in northeast Sumatra. He lived in Bencoolen for two years, Yogyakarta for six years, and moved to Singapore in 1987. He teaches at the National University of Singapore, and heads the Archaeology Unit in ISEAS.
Lim Chen Sian is presently a Visiting Research Fellow with the Archaeology Unit, ISEAS. His research interest includes material culture from the age of early European contact in Southeast Asia.
Presenting Portraiture is a talk series conceived in conjunction with a two-part exhibition featuring portraits of the Straits Chinese. The first part entitled Dressing the Baba: Recent Donations of Portraits runs till 31 July 2013 at NUS Baba House, whilst the latter commences in late 2013 at NUS Museum. Straits Chinese portraits represent an emerging area of collecting interest and this talk series explores a range of themes, concepts and ideas surrounding the making, collecting and functions of such artworks, including artistic practice and studio processes; pictorial conventions; collecting patterns; technical conservation; iconography and artefacts; and reflections on the social milieu.

Oxford England
Oxford is just 58 minutes away from London Paddington Station and about the same by car, but on Saturdays parking is pretty difficult. My train was completely packed and found myself squeezed into the corner with camera and tripod for the whole journey. It was however well worth the effort, with one of the finest days of the year so far. It had been some time since I had a good walk around the medieval city of Oxford with its university buildings, so I'd been planning the trip for the whole week. Shame I botched the white balance, there's a green tint on the video, which gives it a certain "Je ne sais quoi?" but hey.

'Nowhere Near Here' is a stop motion animation that uses a combination of light with stencils and long exposure photography to tell the story of a dog running around the city at night, doing whatever a dog does. The animation was first exhibited at the The Herbert, in Coventry, on the 7th October 2010. With well over 300 hours in the making, more than 200 stencils involved and too many cold nights spent outside on my knees getting the shots, I am very happy (and relieved) to finally share this with you. Oxford is just 58 minutes away from London Paddington Station and about the same by car, but on Saturdays parking is pretty difficult. My train was completely packed and found myself squeezed into the corner with camera and tripod for the whole journey.
It was however well worth the effort, with one of the finest days of the year so far. It had been some time since I had a good walk around the medieval city of Oxford with its university buildings, so I'd been planning the trip for the whole week. Shame I botched the white balance, there's a green tint on the video, which gives it a certain "Je ne sais quoi?" but hey.

If life is a catwalk, run like a dog.
'Nowhere Near Here' is a stop motion animation that uses a combination of light with stencils and long exposure photography to tell the story of a dog running around the city at night, doing whatever a dog does. The animation was first exhibited at the The Herbert, in Coventry, on the 7th October 2010.
With well over 300 hours in the making, more than 200 stencils involved and too many cold nights spent outside on my knees getting the shots, I am very happy (and relieved) to finally share this with you. Through the course of shooting 'Nowhere Near Here', I have dealt with curious drunks, a dog almost peeing on the camera (the irony is not lost on me, haha), the endlessly suspicious police and even someone nearly running off with a tripod.
This is street art, this is life and thank you for watching.
