Gerald Walcan Bright, better known as Geraldo (10 August 1904, London, England -- 4 May 1974, Vevey, Switzerland) was a British bandleader.
Gerald Walcan Bright, better known as Geraldo (Aug.10,1904 - May 4,1974) was an English bandleader. He adopted the name "Geraldo" in 1930, and became one of the most popular British dance band leaders of the 1930s with his sweet music and his "Gaucho Tango Orchestra". During the 1940s, he modernized his style and continued to enjoy great success.
Bright was born in London, where he played piano and organ and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He started his career as a pianist playing for silent films.
Geraldo became a major figure on the British entertainment scene for four decades, having fronted just about every kind of ensemble and influenced the successful careers of numerous top singers. For his broadcasts he varied the style of his orchestra quite considerably, and a particular series Tip Top Tunes (employing a full string section alongside the usual dance band) enjoyed great popularity. Several commercial recordings were made, spotlighting the considerable arranging talents of the young Wally Stott (better known in the US as Angela Morley) .
Over the years, most of the UK's top musicians played with Geraldo's orchestra, including Ted Heath, who played first trombone in the orchestra before leaving to form his own band and the guitarist Ken Sykora, later to become a respected radio personality, and trumpeter Freddie Jameson.
In the 1950s he composed the start-up music for Scottish Television. Entitled Scotlandia, it was heard virtually every day for over thirty years at the beginning of programmes.
Geraldo died from a heart attack while on holiday in Switzerland in 1974.

Indian Summer is a jazz standard originally written as a piano piece by the prolific composer Victor Herbert. Al Dubin later wrote the lyrics. Herbert composed the tune in 1919, but it did not become a standard until much later. Sheet music exists for Everett Hoagland and Don Reid versions, dating to 1934 and 1939 respectively, but the provenance of the second of these, at least, is doubtful, as Reid may not even have formed an orchestra until 1944.

Plot: In Minas Gerais, the powerful "colonel" Alexandrão gets married with the young and virgin Cristina and promotes a huge wedding party in his farm. He eats and drinks a lot along the day, and in his "first night" with the bride, he dies before consummating his marriage. The marital status of Cristina becomes very unusual, being a virgin widow. Her doctor advises her to travel to Rio de Janeiro to rest, and she moves with her aunt to an inherited apartment in Leme. Once in Rio de Janeiro, the rascal Constantino, who is aware of her wealth, courts her and borrows money, clothes and a Mercedes Benz from his friends, pretending he is businessman man. His friends release "stocks" in a parallel stock market, based and supported in the expectation of the possible marriage of Constantino with Cristina. However, the ghost of Coronel Alexandrão appears for her whenever she intends to have sex with Constantino.

He adopted the name "Geraldo" in 1930, and became one of the most popular British dance band leaders of the 1930s with his sweet music and his "Gaucho Tango Orchestra". During the 1940s, he modernized his style and continued to enjoy great success.
Bright was born in London, where he played piano and organ and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He started his career as a pianist playing for silent films.
Geraldo became a major figure on the British entertainment scene for four decades, having fronted just about every kind of ensemble and influenced the successful careers of numerous top singers. For his broadcasts he varied the style of his orchestra quite considerably, and a particular series Tip Top Tunes (employing a full string section alongside the usual dance band) enjoyed great popularity. Several commercial recordings were made, spotlighting the considerable arranging talents of the young Wally Stott (better known in the US as Angela Morley) .
Over the years, most of the UK's top musicians played with Geraldo's orchestra, including Ted Heath, who played first trombone in the orchestra before leaving to form his own band and the guitarist Ken Sykora, later to become a respected radio personality, and trumpeter Freddie Jameson.
In the 1950s he composed the start-up music for Scottish Television. Entitled Scotlandia, it was heard virtually every day for over thirty years at the beginning of programmes.
Geraldo died from a heart attack while on holiday in Switzerland in 1974.

Gerald Walcan Bright, better known as Geraldo (Aug.10,1904 - May 4,1974) was an English bandleader. He adopted the name "Geraldo" in 1930, and became one of the most popular British dance band leaders of the 1930s with his sweet music and his "Gaucho Tango Orchestra". During the 1940s, he modernized his style and continued to enjoy great success.
Bright was born in London, where he played piano and organ and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He started his career as a pianist playing for silent films.
Geraldo became a major figure on the British entertainment scene for four decades, having fronted just about every kind of ensemble and influenced the successful careers of numerous top singers. For his broadcasts he varied the style of his orchestra quite considerably, and a particular series Tip Top Tunes (employing a full string section alongside the usual dance band) enjoyed great popularity. Several commercial recordings were made, spotlighting the considerable arranging talents of the young Wally Stott (better known in the US as Angela Morley) .
Over the years, most of the UK's top musicians played with Geraldo's orchestra, including Ted Heath, who played first trombone in the orchestra before leaving to form his own band and the guitarist Ken Sykora, later to become a respected radio personality, and trumpeter Freddie Jameson.
In the 1950s he composed the start-up music for Scottish Television. Entitled Scotlandia, it was heard virtually every day for over thirty years at the beginning of programmes.
Geraldo died from a heart attack while on holiday in Switzerland in 1974.

Gerald Walcan Bright, better known as Geraldo (10 August 1904, London, England -- 4 May 1974, Vevey, Switzerland) was an English bandleader. He adopted the name "Geraldo" in 1930 to become one of the most popular British dance band leaders of the 1930s with his "sweet music" and his "Gaucho Tango Orchestra". During the 1940s, he modernized his style to continue enjoying great success.

Among the many individuals and organizations that operate in the industry are: the songwriters and composers who create new songs and musical pieces; the singers, musicians, conductors and bandleaders who perform the music; the companies and professionals who create and sell recorded music and/or sheet music (e.g., music publishers, music producers, recording studios, engineers, record labels, retail and online music stores, performance rights organizations); and those that help organize and present live music performances (sound engineers, booking agents, promoters, music venues, road crew).
The industry also includes a range of professionals who assist singers and musicians with their music careers (talent managers, artists and repertoire managers, business managers, entertainment lawyers); those who broadcast audio or video music content (satellite, Internet radio stations, broadcast radio and TV stations); music journalists and music critics; DJs; music educators and teachers; musical instrument manufacturers; as well as many others. In addition to the businesses and artists who work in the music industry to make a profit or income, there are a range of organizations that also play an important role in the music industry, including musician's unions (e.g., American Federation of Musicians), not-for-profit performance-rights organizations (e.g., American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) and other associations.

Dan Donovan was one of the finest singers from the Golden Age of the British Dance Bands, and this selection serves as a sample of his work. Dan rose to prominence when he joined the band of Debroy Somers in 1930 and was Debroy's principal vocalist until Dan accepted an invitation from Henry Hall to join the BBC Dance Orchestra in September 1934. It should be noted that Dan not only sang with these bands, but he was a member of their saxophone sections too.
Before joining the BBC Dance Orchestra, Dan was free to record with other bands when his work schedule with Debroy Somers allowed. Thus he can be heard here with Harry Bidgood's recording band and Oscar Rabin's Romany Band, in its early days. Dan's contract with the BBC meant his services were exclusive to its resident dance orchestra and for several years Dan only recorded with Henry Hall. However this was the period in his career when Dan was a household name and broadcast more than any other singer in Great Britain.
When Henry decided to leave the BBC in 1937, Dan decided not to stay with the orchestra, but instead made the decision to capitalise on his radio fame and branch out into variety. He also, for a short period, became a bandleader and recorded just four titles for HMV, including this recording here, which you may recognise as "Danny Boy". Dan was "branded" as an Irish singer and could sing in the appropriate accent, but Dan was born and bred in Cardiff -- and a Welshman through and through, despite the impression given in some contemporary publications..

One of the series' earliest successes and its single most popular episode is Lucille Fletcher's "Sorry, Wrong Number," about a bedridden woman (Agnes Moorehead) who panics after overhearing a murder plot on a crossed telephone connection but is unable to persuade anyone to investigate. First broadcast on May 25, 1943, it was restaged seven times (last on February 14, 1960) — each time with Moorehead. The popularity of the episode led to a film adaptation, Sorry, Wrong Number (1948), starring Barbara Stanwyck. Nominated for an Academy Award for her performance, Stanwyck recreated the role on Lux Radio Theater. Loni Anderson had the lead in the TV movie Sorry, Wrong Number (1989). Another notable early episode was Fletcher's "The Hitch Hiker," in which a motorist (Orson Welles) is stalked on a cross-country trip by a nondescript man who keeps appearing on the side of the road. This episode originally aired on September 2, 1942, and was later adapted for television by Rod Serling as a 1960 episode of The Twilight Zone.
After the network sustained the program during its first two years, the sponsor became Roma Wines (1944--1947), and then (after another brief period of sustained hour-long episodes, initially featuring Robert Montgomery as host and "producer" in early 1948), Autolite Spark Plugs (1948--1954); eventually Harlow Wilcox (of Fibber McGee and Molly) became the pitchman. William Spier, Norman MacDonnell and Anton M. Leader were among the producers and directors.
The program's heyday was in the early 1950s, when radio actor, producer and director Elliott Lewis took over (still during the Wilcox/Autolite run). Here the material reached new levels of sophistication. The writing was taut, and the casting, which had always been a strong point of the series (featuring such film stars as Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Henry Fonda, Humphrey Bogart, Judy Garland, Ronald Colman, Marlene Dietrich, Eve McVeagh, Lena Horne, and Cary Grant), took an unexpected turn when Lewis expanded the repertory to include many of radio's famous drama and comedy stars — often playing against type — such as Jack Benny. One of the series' earliest successes and its single most popular episode is Lucille Fletcher's "Sorry, Wrong Number," about a bedridden woman (Agnes Moorehead) who panics after overhearing a murder plot on a crossed telephone connection but is unable to persuade anyone to investigate. First broadcast on May 25, 1943, it was restaged seven times (last on February 14, 1960) — each time with Moorehead. The popularity of the episode led to a film adaptation, Sorry, Wrong Number (1948), starring Barbara Stanwyck. Nominated for an Academy Award for her performance, Stanwyck recreated the role on Lux Radio Theater. Loni Anderson had the lead in the TV movie Sorry, Wrong Number (1989). Another notable early episode was Fletcher's "The Hitch Hiker," in which a motorist (Orson Welles) is stalked on a cross-country trip by a nondescript man who keeps appearing on the side of the road. This episode originally aired on September 2, 1942, and was later adapted for television by Rod Serling as a 1960 episode of The Twilight Zone.
After the network sustained the program during its first two years, the sponsor became Roma Wines (1944--1947), and then (after another brief period of sustained hour-long episodes, initially featuring Robert Montgomery as host and "producer" in early 1948), Autolite Spark Plugs (1948--1954); eventually Harlow Wilcox (of Fibber McGee and Molly) became the pitchman. William Spier, Norman MacDonnell and Anton M. Leader were among the producers and directors.
The program's heyday was in the early 1950s, when radio actor, producer and director Elliott Lewis took over (still during the Wilcox/Autolite run). Here the material reached new levels of sophistication. The writing was taut, and the casting, which had always been a strong point of the series (featuring such film stars as Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Henry Fonda, Humphrey Bogart, Judy Garland, Ronald Colman, Marlene Dietrich, Eve McVeagh, Lena Horne, and Cary Grant), took an unexpected turn when Lewis expanded the repertory to include many of radio's famous drama and comedy stars — often playing against type — such as Jack Benny. The Gas Station was probably not the smartest place to hold a GG Allin show. A converted service station in the heart of New York's East Village, its small, dank garage, which still reeks of oil and gasoline, is now a performance space, while the fenced-in yard serves as an artist's studio, studded with jagged metal sculptures and surrounded by junked cars, rusty scrap iron, and towers of welded machine parts. An especially dangerous locale for a riot, which was how most GG Allin shows ended. The Gas Station show was the culmination of Allin's first tour after being released from prison in Michigan, where he had been serving a three-year sentence for cutting a woman with a knife in concert. Then Joe Loss and his Band play for the guests who crowd onto the dance floor. We see Several shots of guests including bandleader Geraldo with pianist Billy Mayerl, composer Lawrence Wright (aka Horatio Nichols), 'Princess Pearl' - Mrs Harry Roy (bandleader's wife), orchestra leader Maurice Winnick, singer Florrie Forde, orchestra leaders Mantovani and Debroy Somers.
Then, on the cleared dance floor we see the dancing girls from the Carl Hyson and Leslie Roberts Cabaret from the Cafe Anglais. The guests stand around the dance floor and watch. The girls wear long frilly dresses and carry baskets of fruit as they dance to the Latin American tune (think it is 'Cielite Lindo').
Two of the main dancers - "dainty Lillian and Constance" - stay on the floor and do a dance routine with Ronnie Boyer to 'Tango Dreams'. The Gas Station was probably not the smartest place to hold a GG Allin show. A converted service station in the heart of New York's East Village, its small, dank garage, which still reeks of oil and gasoline, is now a performance space, while the fenced-in yard serves as an artist's studio, studded with jagged metal sculptures and surrounded by junked cars, rusty scrap iron, and towers of welded machine parts. An especially dangerous locale for a riot, which was how most GG Allin shows ended.
The Gas Station show was the culmination of Allin's first tour after being released from prison in Michigan, where he had been serving a three-year sentence for cutting a woman with a knife in concert. Fronting a number of bands since his debut in 1980, Allin was known for a particularly puerile brand of Stooges/Dolls-inspired punk, but was most notorious for live performances that were unprecedented in the extremes he took to assault and disgust his audiences. Getting sent to jail had forced Allin to renege on his promise to kill himself live onstage on Halloween 1990, and since his release in April, he had backed away from his renowned threat. He still said he was going to go through with it, but postponed it until a time in the distant future when he had "reached his peak."
As it turned out, when the end finally came, it was under circumstances that couldn't have been more cliché by rock'n'roll standards. Like so many of the dinosaur rock stars he excoriated, Allin, at the age of 36, died on June 28 of an apparent drug overdose.
Out of control from the get-go, he attacked the crowd with a vengeance that was extreme even for Allin. He viciously cracked several people in the face with his microphone, drawing blood, and knocked one photographer unconscious with his own camera. In the middle of his second song, Allin defecated on the stage, picked up the excrement, and rubbed it on himself and on a woman in the audience. When soundman John Credo then pulled the plug on the show, Allin hurled himself into a set of French doors, sending shattered glass and splintered wood flying. While Allin stumbled about covered in blood from head to toe, the audience began to riot, stampeding into the courtyard, throwing chairs and pieces of metal and bottles from a recycling bin. The bouncers who were hired as security began beating people trapped inside the small performance space with socks filled with metal or rocks. Nervous about his equipment, Credo retreated to his truck and returned to threaten patrons with his pit bull. Allin beat a hasty retreat, putting on a white miniskirt he borrowed from his 17-year-old girlfriend, Liz Mankowski, and jumping into a cab as a mob pursued them down the street. After just one and a half songs, Allin's last gig was over. "It was the sickest show he ever did," said Todd Phillips, director of Hated: GG Allin & the Murder Junkies, a documentary about Allin.
Later that evening, after he scored some heroin, Allin and Mankowski returned to Yount and Puke's small studio apartment. Puke says Allin snorted about three bags over the next hour before he began to nod out. They talked about the future, about doing a European tour and some spoken word performances. Still wearing his girlfriend's miniskirt, a jean jacket, leather aviator's cap, and dog collar, he told Puke, "We gotta do that spoken-word tour, man." It turned out to be the last thing he ever said.
His friends decided to let him sleep the drugs off sprawled on the floor, his head propped up on a laundry bag. Mankowski went up to the roof with Yount and talked about her relationship with Allin. She had written to him in prison, having seen a show of his in Milwaukee, her hometown, when she was 13. They had been together since his release in April. She told Yount that Allin had told her he loved her and wanted to get married.
At nine o'clock, Puke got up to get ready for work and he and Mankowski went to check on Allin. His body was already cold. They called 911 and his brother and bass player, Merle.
"He was all purple;" Merle said. "He had snot coming out of his nose and blood coming out of his mouth and a big fucking scowl on his face. It was typical GG." The performer Allin admired most, said Merle, was Hank Williams, who also died of a drug overdose. "He identified with his hard-drinking, lonesome cowboy, gig-to-gig life. They were both outsiders."
Some of Allin's most loyal fans now feel that the manner of his death was ironically fitting. "He got everyone thinking he would die onstage on Halloween," said Puke, "but instead he died quietly some June morning in Alphabet City. GG always said, 'With GG Allin you don't get what you expect, you get what you deserve.'"■
