Hanley Ramírez

Hanley Ramírez (born December 23, 1983) is a Dominican professional baseball first baseman for the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB). Ramírez is a three-time MLB All-Star, and received the 2006 NL Rookie of the Year Award. He has played in MLB for the Red Sox, Florida / Miami Marlins and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ramírez has established himself as an elite threat at the plate over the years. with a high batting average (.300), high isolated power (.200) and a roughly average walk rate (9.6%). However, he is rated a poor defensive shortstop, which is why the 2015 Boston Red Sox played him in left field for the first time in his MLB career, with even poorer results. The Red Sox have since announced that Ramirez would be the team's starting first baseman for the 2016 season.

Early life

Hanley Ramírez was born in Samaná, Dominican Republic to Toribio and Isabela Ramírez. Ramirez's father was an auto mechanic, and at an early age Ramírez was an avid baseball fan, and showed great potential in the sport to make it as an MLB prospect. He was also known as a basketball player. He attended Adbentista High School in Samaná, and was a great player attracting the attention of MLB scouts. Boston Red Sox scout, Levy Ochoa, recognized Ramírez's talent and signed him to the Red Sox in 2000.

Following their victory in the 2013 World Series, they became the first team to win three World Series trophies in the 21st century, including championships in 2004 and 2007. Red Sox history has also been marked by the team's intense rivalry with the Yankees, arguably the fiercest and most historic in North American professional sports.

Major League Baseball (MLB) is a professional baseball league. A total of 30 teams now play in two divisions, the American League (AL) and National League (NL), with 15 teams in each. The AL and NL operated as separate legal entities from 1901 and 1876 respectively, until 2000, when they were merged into a single organization known as Major League Baseball.
