Shihad are an alternative rock band from New Zealand, formed in 1988. The band consists of Jon Toogood (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Phil Knight (lead guitar, synthesiser, backing vocals), Karl Kippenberger (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Tom Larkin (drums, backing vocals, samplers). During their recording career, Shihad have produced five number-one studio albums, holding the title for most number one records for any New Zealand artist, alongside Hayley Westenra, and three top-ten singles in New Zealand.
At the release time of their ninth studio album FVEY, Shihad have the most Top 40 New Zealand chart singles for any New Zealand artist, with 25. Of these singles, "Home Again", "Pacifier" and "Bitter" are listed at numbers 30, 60 and 83, respectively, in the Nature's Best compilation, an official collection of New Zealand's top 100 songs.
Shihad were formed by Jon Toogood and Tom Larkin in 1988. The band's musical style was originally indebted to San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal bands, such as Metallica and Megadeth; although, the band found wider popularity over the following decade playing a mixture of modern rock, post-grunge and pop rock that gained the band opening slots with professional United States rock acts, as well as favourable reviews.
New Zealand (/njuːˈziːlənd/ new-ZEE-lənd, Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses – that of the North Island, or Te Ika-a-Māui, and the South Island, or Te Waipounamu – and numerous smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.
Somewhere between 1250 and 1300 CE, Polynesians settled in the islands that were to become New Zealand, and developed a distinctive Māori culture. In 1642, Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, became the first European to sight New Zealand. In 1840, representatives of the British Crown and Māori Chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, making New Zealand a British colony. Today, the majority of New Zealand's population of 4.5 million is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority, followed by Asians and Pacific Islanders. Reflecting this, New Zealand's culture is mainly derived from Māori and early British settlers, with recent broadening arising from increased immigration. The official languages are English, Māori and New Zealand Sign Language, with English predominant.

The General Electric is the fourth album released by New Zealand band Shihad in 1999.
The producer of this album, Garth Richardson, is the well respected producer of bands such as Rage Against the Machine, Chevelle and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The songs "Wait And See", "Just Like Everybody Else" and "Spacing" all were on previous releases, and were re-recorded for the album.
"Wait And See" and "Spacing" were on the Blue Light Disco EP and "Just Like Everybody Else" was featured on their single for the track "Bitter", which was taken from their album Killjoy.
"My Mind's Sedate", "The General Electric" and "Pacifier" were all used as singles. "Sport And Religion" was released to radio, and had a video made, but was not officially a single.
A bonus disc is available with later versions of The General Electric that included live tracks from the 2000 Big Day Out festival and four music videos.
It was their first album to garner a 'Platinum' certification in New Zealand --- and then later went on to 2x Platinum, making it their best selling album to date.
It's a Wonderful Life is the third studio album by American indie rock group Sparklehorse, released in August 2001 by record label Capitol/EMI. The album features appearances by Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, John Parish, Nina Persson and Dave Fridmann.
It was the band's most successful album commercially, selling over 63,000 copies.
Mark Linkous recorded his first two albums, Good Morning Spider and Vivadixesubmarinetransmissionplot, in a small room inside his Virginia farm. There he worked by himself, providing all of the instrumentation and vocals for those albums. After the release of those albums, however, "the guy who hired me left [Capitol]," Linkous told Free Williamsburg Online Magazine in 2002, and his record label discouraged the solo-production process. As a result, It’s a Wonderful Life was the first Sparklehorse outing in which Linkous did not perform alone in his private studio. “I didn't want to play every instrument on every song,” said the songwriter. “I didn't want to be behind the control console the whole time. I wanted to have other people's brains and input involved.” Linkous played with a full band while recording It’s a Wonderful Life. He also worked with a wide array of guest musicians, which included PJ Harvey and Tom Waits.

It was released on 2 May 2005, and yielded the singles "Alive", "All the Young Fascists", "Shot in the Head", "Dark Times" and "None of the Above". The album is considered a return to Shihad's earlier heavier style, after an ill-fated attempt to make it big in the United States. The lyrics themselves are notably darker because of this - and are far more politically orientated than their earlier material, ...

Jon Toogood of Shihad speaking with Australian journalist and author Andrew McMillen for his book 'Talking Smack: Honest Conversations About Drugs', which was published in July 2014 by University of Queensland Press. This clip was filmed at the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens in April 2013, immediately after our hour-long interview on the topic of drug use of all sorts – illicit, legal and prescription – which was then published as one of fourteen chapters in 'Talking Smack'. Jon was visiting Brisbane as Shihad were supporting Black Sabbath on their Australian tour. Jon Toogood: "[The interview] made me think about things I hadn't thought about for a long time. It's quite timely for me, reflecting on my life with drugs from a perspective of not having [used] drugs for a long time." More ...

on your own today
lost with no direction
they took your dreams away
and stripped you of protection
but there's a light that won't burn out
when your heart is screaming out
is screaming
it doesn't matter where you are
there is life behind the walls around you
it doesn't matter where you start
won't be long, won't be long until
the walls around you are gone
on my own again
with open invitations and the world i'm in
is such a new sensation
but there's a light that won't burn out
if your heart begins to doubt
it doesn't matter where you are
there is life behind that walls around you
it doesn't matter where you start
it won't be long, won't be long until
the walls around you are gone
maybe a path to glory
it maybe a road to dust
it maybe there's one great story in all of us
in all of us, yeah
on your own today
lost with no direction
they took your dreams away
and stripped you of protection
but there's a light that won't burn out
when your heart is screaming out
is screaming
it doesn't matter where you are
there is life behind the walls around you
it doesn't matter where you start
it won't be long, won't be long until
the walls around you are gone
(cos when the walls are closing in)
(another day begins)
(as the last flame flickers out)
cos there's something good in us
(cos when the walls are closing in)
(another day begins)
(as the last flame flickers out)
cos there's something good in us
(cos when the walls are closing in)
(another day begins)
there must be something beautiful in us
cos there's something good in us
(cos when the walls are closing in)
(another day begins)
there must be something beautiful in us
