Washington i/ˈwɒʃɪŋtən/ is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States located north of Oregon, west of Idaho, and south of the Canadian province of British Columbia on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Named after George Washington, the first President of the United States, the state was made out of the western part of the Washington Territory which had been ceded by Britain in 1846 by the Oregon Treaty as a settlement of the Oregon Boundary Dispute. It was admitted to the Union as the 42nd state in 1889. Washington is often referred to as Washington State or the State of Washington to distinguish it from Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States.
Washington is the 18th largest and the 13th most populous state. Approximately 60 percent of Washington's residents live in the Seattle metropolitan area, the center of transportation, business, and industry along the Puget Sound region of the Salish Sea, an inlet of the Pacific consisting of numerous islands, deep fjords, and bays carved out by glaciers. The remainder of the state consists of deep temperate rainforests in the west, mountain ranges in the west, central, northeast and far southeast, and a semi-arid basin region in the east, central, and south, given over to intensive agriculture. After California, Washington is the second most populous state on the West Coast and in the Western United States.

Cascade Mountains, WA . In July Cindy and I drove through the Cascade Mountains of Washington on an absolutely gorgeous summer day. Hot, with temperature in the 90's and clear skies, perfect road trip. For anyone looking for a memorable road trip, this is highly recommended. The roads are excellent and Washington State has many cost advantages to it's northern neighbor. Fuel, accommodations and food cost less (just see how many Canadians go cross border shopping) and there are a lot of parks along the way to enjoy the outdoors. We encountered some motorcycles, recreational vehicles and even bicycles taking this route. Music: Slow mind by Alexander Blu http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/

First published in 1941, Washington, A Guide to the Evergreen State, is our state’s contribution to the massive American Guide Series. Conceived as a Federal New Deal project during the Great Depression of the 1930’s, the guides were part history, part cultural record and part travel maps. Over a period of almost a decade, thousands of writers, artists, photographers, mapmakers and professional wanderers traveled the country’s roadways in a remarkable effort to “record the landscape of the American mind.”The entire series included volumes on every one of the then 48 states as well as several cities and distinct locales. Revisiting Washington: A Guide to the Evergreen State is our first foray into heritage tourism, a revisitation of the original Washington guidebook, complete with the hist...

This is a glimpse into the world of an elite athlete.
hrough those Martian woods of Washington State
On a long and winding drive
Out of my slumber I awoke
And suddenly found my prize
"Stop the car, I know where we are"
And I jumped out the back
A melody was there and clearly shared
All my misplaced ways
The driver called me back
Fearing an attack of an unstable mind
But I danced away
O the lonely days
These broken parts, heavy on my heart
Have finally found their way
So come riddle near me forever
If we cackle over porridge
We'll bind our wild hair's split end
Out there's a character I must've read in books
Playing that tune
An afternoon of a faun
My home long gone
Sanctuary soon
These broken parts found no art
'Till the right melody played
Something wild in the smile
That made so many run away
So come riddle near me forever
What they call madness is your friend
If we cackle over porridge
