The name Frederick William usually refers to several monarchs and princes of the Hohenzollern dynasty:
Other nobility with the name Frederick William are:
Frederick William Faber Cong. Orat. (28 June 1814 – 26 September 1863) was a noted English hymn writer and theologian, who converted from Anglicanism to the Catholic priesthood. His best-known work is Faith of Our Fathers. Though he was a Roman Catholic writing for fellow Catholics at that point, many of his hymns today are sung by Protestant congregations.
Faber was born in 1814 at Calverley, then within the Parish of Calverley in the West Riding of Yorkshire, where his grandfather, Thomas Faber, was the vicar. His father served the local bishop of the Church of England as his secretary.<ref name=OST /
Faber attended grammar school at Bishop Auckland in County Durham for a short time, but a large portion of his boyhood was spent in Westmorland. He afterwards attended the Harrow School for five years, followed by enrollment in 1832 at Balliol College at the University of Oxford. In 1834, he obtained a scholarship at the University College, from which he graduated. In 1836 he won the Newdigate Prize for a poem on "The Knights of St John," which elicited special praise from John Keble. Among his college friends were Arthur Penrhyn Stanley and Roundell Palmer, 1st Earl of Selborne. After graduation he was elected a fellow of the college.
Robert Spaemann (born 5 May 1927) is arguably the foremost Roman Catholic philosopher in Germany today.
Spaemann's focus is on Christian ethics. He is known for his work in bioethics, ecology, and human rights. Although not yet widely translated into languages other than his native German, Spaemann is internationally known and his work is highly regarded by Pope Benedict XVI.
Robert Spaemann was born in Berlin in 1927, to Heinrich Spaemann and Ruth Krämer. His parents were originally radical atheists, but both entered the Catholic Church in 1930, and after his mother's early death his father was ordained a Catholic priest in 1942.
Spaemann studied at the University of Münster, where, in 1962, he was awarded his Habilitation. He was Professor of Philosophy at the Universities of Stuttgart (until 1968), Heidelberg (until 1972), and Munich, where he worked until he was made Emeritus Professor in 1992. He is also Honorary Professor at Salzburg University and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Catholic University of Lublin in 2012.
Nicolas Malebranche, Cong. Orat. (French: [nikɔlɑ malbrɑ̃ʃ]; 6 August 1638 – 13 October 1715), was a French Oratorian priest and rationalist philosopher. In his works, he sought to synthesize the thought of St. Augustine and Descartes, in order to demonstrate the active role of God in every aspect of the world. Malebranche is best known for his doctrines of Vision in God and Occasionalism.
Malebranche was born in Paris in 1638, the youngest child of Nicolas Malebranche, secretary to King Louis XIII of France, and Catherine de Lauzon, sister of Jean de Lauson, a Governor of New France. Because of a malformed spine, Malebranche received his elementary education from a private tutor. He left home at the age of sixteen to pursue a course of philosophy at the Collège de la Marche, and subsequently to study theology at the Collège de Sorbonne, both colleges from the University of Paris. He eventually left the Sorbonne, having rejected scholasticism, and entered the Oratory in 1660. There, he devoted himself to ecclesiastical history, linguistics, the Bible, and the works of Saint Augustine. Malebranche was ordained a priest in 1664.
Thought can refer to the ideas or arrangements of ideas that result from thinking, the act of producing thoughts, or the process of producing thoughts. Although thought is a fundamental human activity familiar to everyone, there is no generally accepted agreement as to what thought is or how it is created. Thoughts may or may not arise in the mind from the product of subconscious brain processing.
Because thought underlies many human actions and interactions, understanding its physical and metaphysical origins, processes, and effects has been a longstanding goal of many academic disciplines including psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, artificial intelligence, biology, sociology and cognitive science.
Thinking allows humans to make sense of, interpret, represent or model the world they experience, and to make predictions about that world. It is therefore helpful to an organism with needs, objectives, and desires as it makes plans or otherwise attempts to accomplish those goals.
How do creative people come up with great ideas? Organizational psychologist Adam Grant studies "originals": thinkers who dream up new ideas and take action to put them into the world. In this talk, learn three unexpected habits of originals — including embracing failure. "The greatest originals are the ones who fail the most, because they're the ones who try the most," Grant says. "You need a lot of bad ideas in order to get a few good ones." Big Thinkers is a former ZDTV (later TechTV) television program. It featured a half-hour interview with a "big thinker" in science, technology, and other fields. Interviews were filmed in a 16:9 format and intercut with public domain material from the Prelinger Archives. In 2009, J D Wetherspoon, a chain of more than 800 pubs in the UK, was facing declining sales. Demand for beer had been down for five years. In addition, pricing pressure from super market chains was intense, and higher alcohol taxes further squeezed its already tight margins. What would you say is the company's real business problem? Most people see it as a sales problem and recommend better marketing and promotion. But this reflex may be wrong. In Wetherspoon's case, the company examined the problem more deeply, looked at data, and framed the situation from multiple angles. In the end, they found the real problem: A subtle but profound shift in consumer preferences. As a result, the chain responded with much bolder actions, transforming all its pubs into family friendly cafes during...
Aristotle is frequently regarded as one of the greatest thinkers of antiquity. So why didn't he think much of his brain? In this brief history of the brain (what we call 'The Great Brain Debate'), the GPA explores what the great minds of the past thought about thought. And we discover that questions that seem to have obvious answers today were anything but self-evident for the individuals that first tackled them. And that conversely, sometimes the facts which we simply accept to be true can be blinding, preventing us from making deeper discoveries about our our world and ourselves. Thou, mighty Heathen, wert not so bereft Of heavenly helps to thy great-hearted deeds, That thou shouldst dig for truths in broken creeds, 'Mid the loose sands of four old empires left. Motions and shadows dimly glowing fell On thy broad soul from forms invisible. With its plain grandeur, simple, calm, and free, What wonder was it that thy life should merit Sparkles of grace, and angel ministry, With jealous glimpses of the world of spirit? Greatest and best in this--that thy pure mind, Upon its saving mission all intent, Scorned the untruth of leaving books behind, To claim for thine what through thy lips was sent. What does it take to be a Christian, and what does it take to be a philosopher? In this video, the Rev. Dr. Jayme Mathias, pastor of Holy Family Catholic Church in Austin, Texas, sheds light on the thought of Father Nicolas Malebranche!
Part 2.5. Focuses on Malebranche, a lesser-known French Philosopher, and his ideas on idealism and the influence they had on English philosopher George Berkeley. Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-Share Alike 2.0 UK: England & Wales; http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/uk/
Robert Merrihew Adams, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, "Power, Cause, and Law in Malebranche's Occasionalism" Abstract No 17th century philosopher contributed more importantly to the development of modern understandings of causality than Nicolas Malebranche. This paper will examine the question, how the causal concepts involved in Malebranche's occasionalist theory, and his arguments for it, are related to those that are presupposed in his views about divine and human freedom.
Prof. Steven Nadler discusses Leibniz, Malebrance, and Arnauld on theodicy and the problem of evil. You can find his book here: http://www.amazon.com/Best-All-Possible-Worlds-Philosophers/dp/0374229988

Source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolas_Malebranche Nicolas Malebranche was born in Paris in 1638, the youngest child of Nicolas Malebranche, secretary to King Louis XIII of France, and Catherine de Lauzon, sister of a Jean de Lauson, Governor of New France. There, he devoted himself to ecclesiastical history, linguistics, the Bible,...

Sophism is a method of teaching. In ancient Greece, sophists were a category of teachers who specialized in using the techniques of philosophy and rhetoric for the purpose of teaching arete—excellence, or virtue—predominantly to young statesmen and nobility. The practice of charging money for education and providing wisdom only to those who could pay led to the condemnations made by Socrates, through Plato in his dialogues, as well as Xenophon's Memorabilia. Through works such as these, Sophists were portrayed as "specious" or "deceptive", hence the modern meaning of the term. The term originated from Greek σόφισμα, sophisma, from σοφίζω, sophizo "I am wise"; confer σοφιστής, sophistēs, meaning "wise-ist, one who does wisdom," and σοφός, sophós means "wise man". Periander (Greek: Περίανδρος) was the second tyrant of Corinth, Greece in the 7th century BC. He was the son of the first tyrant, Cypselus. Periander succeeded his father in 627 BC. He upgraded Corinth's port, and built a ramp across the Isthmus of Corinth so that ships could be dragged across (the Diolkos), avoiding the sea route around the Peloponnese. The money gained from the diolkos allowed Periander to abolish taxes in Corinth. However, Periander was later considered the typical evil tyrant (for example, by Aristotle). Herodotus says he learned his "savagery" from Thrasybulus, the tyrant of Miletus, who instructed Periander to get rid of anyone who could conceivably take power from him. Among his acts were sending young boys from Corcyra to be castrated in Lydia (who are reputed to ...

Cyrene, the ancient Greek city (in present-day Libya) was the oldest and most important of the five Greek cities in the region and gave eastern Libya the classical name 'Cyrenaica' that it has retained to modern times. It lies in a lush valley in the Jebel Akhdar uplands. It was named after a spring, Kyre, which the Greeks consecrated to Apollo. Cyrene was founded as a colony of the Greeks of Thera, traditionally led by Aristotle (later called Battus) of Thera, about 630 BC, ten miles from its port, Apollonia (Marsa Sousa). Details concerning the founding of the city are contained in Book IV of the Histories of Herodotus. It promptly became the chief town of the ancient Libyan region between Egypt and Carthage (Cyrenaica), kept up commercial relations with all the Greek cities, and reache...
Eratosthenes of Cyrene (/ɛrəˈtɒsθəniːz/; Greek: Ἐρατοσθένης, IPA: [eratostʰénɛːs]; c. 276 BC – c. 195/194 BC) was a Greek mathematician, geographer, poet, astronomer, and music theorist. He was a man of learning, becoming the chief librarian at the Library of Alexandria. He invented the discipline of geography, including the terminology used today. He is best known for being the first person to calculate the circumference of the Earth, which he did by applying a measuring system using stadia, a standard unit of measure during that time period. His calculation was remarkably accurate. He was also the first to calculate the tilt of the Earth's axis (again with remarkable accuracy). Additionally, he may have accurately calculated the distance from the Earth to the Sun and invented the leap...

Is the moon an artificial structure? Was it towed into orbit, or is it a hologram? Stay tuned as Esoteric Detective investigates, 6 things that might prove the moon is an artificial structure. The moon has always played an important role in the history of Earth and human culture. But even after all human study, it is still a strange structure that displays characteristics that baffle modern science, even today. Leading some researchers to put forth the theory that the moon might in fact not be a natural object in Earth orbit, but in fact be artificial, or something that was constructed. The ancient philosophers, Democritus and Anaxagoras, taught that there was a time when the Earth was without the Moon. And Aristotle wrote that Arcadia in Greece, before being inhabited by the Hellenes,...
A description of the "A" proposition in Categorical Logic known as the Universal Affirmative (100 Days of Logic & 90 Second Philosophy).
Aratus was a Greek didactic poet. His major extant work is his hexameter poem Phaenomena , the first half of which is a verse setting of a lost work of the same name by Eudoxus of Cnidus. It describes the constellations and other celestial phenomena. The second half is called the Diosemeia , and is chiefly about weather lore. Although Aratus was somewhat ignorant of Greek astronomy, his poem was very popular in the Greek and Roman world, as is proved by the large number of commentaries and Latin translations, some of which survive. Life There are several accounts of his life by anonymous Greek writers, and the Suda and Eudocia also mention him. From these it appears that he was a native of Soli in Cilicia, (although one authority says Tarsus). He is known to have studied with Menecrates...
The "historical development of geophysics" has been motivated by two factors. One of these is the research curiosity of humankind related to Planet Earth and its several components, its events and its problems. The second one is economical usage of Earth resources and Earth-related hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, tides, and floods. In circa 240 BC, Eratosthenes of Cyrene measured the circumference of the Earth, using trigonometry and the angle of the Sun at more than one latitude in Egypt. There is some information about earthquakes in Aristotle's "Meteorology", in "Naturalis Historia" by Pliny the Elder, and in Strabo's "Geographica". Aristotle and Strabo recorded observations on tides. A natural explanation of volcanoes was first undertaken by the Greek phi...

Break his legs
And give him thirty years in jail
I was just
Thinking about a girl
She meant to me the world
She meant the earth
I was just
Thinking about time
Some are left behind
Some think were wrong
Thinking about your face behind my door
Thinking about the love we made on the floor
Thinking I'd like too get back to before
Get back to before
I was just
Thinking about the rain
The way the seas have changed
You just can't stop 'em
Ooh, I was just
Thinking about the sun
And you and me on the run
We had some fun
Thinking about the world that it gets no better
Thinking about my love, I should have given more
Thinking I'd like too get back to before
Get back to before
Thinking about the world that it gets no better
Thinking about my love I should have given more
Thinking I'd like too get back to before
Get back to before
I was just
