The Use of Nootropics In The Military

Last year, the health department of the Military briefly touched on the use of nootropics within the military. The article covers the benefits of nootropics, such improving memory, focus, energy, critical thinking and for mood control.

The following image was shared in the article, depicting two marine soldiers shopping within a dietary shop for nootropic supplements:

Why are soldiers taking nootropics, and even more importantly, what are nootropics? Nootropics refer to either a natural or man-made substance that improves cognitive function. It actually wasn’t even until the 1970’s that such substances were labeled as “nootropics”.

Now hear me out, nootropics aren’t anything new, they’ve actually been used in traditional medicine all over the world for many centuries, but it wasn’t until the 21st century that their benefits become well known and closely studied.

Every watched the movie “Limitless”, or any other movie that depicts the main character taking some super pill that makes him super-human? Well if you follow the storyline closely, you’ll hear the word nootropics being passed around, so yes, the popularity of nootropics is actually one of the main reasons why such movies exist today.

Before you get all excited, nootropics cannot and will never make you a “super-human”. They are simply effective substances that make you a more productive person, but that is where it ends.

Those soldiers in the image are likely shopping for nootropics that improve energy or concentration. While coffee has been a fan favorite for the whole world for increased energy, nootropics have begun to replace that category due to their longer lasting effects and the increase in magnitude.

Even though the article doesn’t touch on what sort of nootropics the soldiers are purchasing, I would take a guess that it would be L-Carnitine for energy and Noopept for concentration. L-Carnitine is actually naturally produced in the body already, but the average person has a deficiency of this substance, so it makes sense to take a supplement to satisfy that deficiency. Noopept, on the other hand, was actually created by the Russian Government back in the 90’s, and today it is known as one of the most effective nootropics for improving focus and concentration.

A bottle of L-Carnitine sells for $23 on Amazon. This includes 200 capsules and you’re supposed to take 2 capsules daily. For Noopept, there isn’t any particular source I recommend purchasing from, so your best bet is to pick up a bottle at your local pharmacy. Do keep in mind that all nootropics are sold over-the-counter and they are not FDA approved since they are referred to as “dietary supplements”.

Outside of purchasing nootropics individually, the most optimal and preferred way to take nootropics are through a nootropic stack. Sounds fancy, but all a nootropic stack is simply a single capsule that contains several nootropics in one. Since there are nootropics for nearly every sort of cognitive function, you don’t want to end up swallowing a dozen capsules daily, it’s simpler and more cost effective to just take two capsules daily.

A legitimate nootropic stack typically sells for $20-$50 depending on where you purchase it. One of the most popular nootropic stacks on the market today is Cogniflex™ Smart Drug — Unlock Your Brain’s Potential.
If you purchase in bulk, each bottle comes out to around $25 and lasts for 30 days.

The following nootropics are found in Cogniflex:
L-Carnitine
L-Theanine
Bacopa Monieri
Rhodiola Rosea
Vitamin B6

In favor of not making this post too long, you can read up on those nootropics on ReviewingThis, it’s a post completely dedicated to analyzing Cogniflex.

As with any serious supplements, it is best to refer to your doctor to make sure that you can safely take any sort of nootropics. While the benefits of nootropics are attractive, staying safe and healthy is considerably more important.

“Treason of the Professors”

On behalf of DaveO, who’s on the road, I give you THIS:

Bradford begins with the proposition that the West is losing its war against Islamic extremism. In all of the quotes below, Bradford’s copious footnotes are omitted:

As of 2015, the West is losing the 4GW [fourth generation war] Islamism declared for three reasons. First, at the most basic level—understanding what the war is about—Islamists enjoy a near-decisive edge: whereas they are fixed on extending their religious, political, and legal domain across the world, the West quests after a fuzzy vision of a democratic, rule-of-law Islamic world where rights of confessional minorities are respected, goods and ideas are freely exchanged, and incentives to religious radicalism are diminished. …

(It doesn’t get better from there.)

(Oh, and a good pun on “CLOACA,” too. You Latin scholars out there will get it.)

Ah, but Mr Bradford paid the price for his outspoken words:

While Bradford’s proposed remedies went too far, the bulk of what he wrote is hard to dispute. And, of course, no one will dispute it. The Left will simply get Bradford fired:

A spokesman at the US Military Academy said William C. Bradford resigned Sunday. He said no further details would be released because of privacy and legal constraints.

The journal that published Bradford’s article must be punished too:

The publication apologized in an editorial last week in response to a barrage of criticism from readers. Editor-in-chief Rick Myers repudiated the article and said the publication is reviewing its selection process “to ensure that we publish high quality scholarly articles.”

I invite you to read the whole thing, and contemplate where we are. And where we’ll be.

“What difference does it make”

Foreign spy services, especially in China and Russia, are aggressively aggregating and cross-indexing hacked U.S. computer databases — including security clearance applications, airline records and medical insurance forms — to identify U.S. intelligence officers and agents, U.S. officials said.

At least one clandestine network of American engineers and scientists who provide technical assistance to U.S. undercover operatives and agents overseas has been compromised as a result, according to two U.S. officials.

What difference does it make? Jimmy Carter pushed for and nearly succeeded in eliminating human spies in favor of satellite imagery. The bad guys discovered underground facilities and multi-million dollar spy satellites became useless. Bubba and Hillary, based on a single human spy and a lot of amateur/friends’ analyses, attacked Iraq once and pushed for war with Iraq up until Saddam was captured and the political equations changed.

Most readers know I am no fan of the CIA, but it sure must suck to be a spy, be known by your host nation as a spy, and have a long road to the nearest airport. Almost as bad an experience as being a diplomat in Benghazi.

Like many of you, I’m very curious how classified information jumped from secure systems to perhaps the most insecure server in the world. Someone who knows what to look for. Someone who knows how to do it. Someone who knows how to either 1) alter the audit log, or 2) have the authority to have the audit log left untouched, but never found during a search. Someone who is a cut-out for a politico’s fixer. They know what this term means. The CIA is looking for this person.

I used to think Robert Ludlum’s stories were delightfully far-fetched, but with reality surpassing fiction, what difference does it make?

VMI’s 2014 Salaries

Over at the Richmond Times Dispatch you can find Virginia State Salaries for 2014.  I of course pulled the VMI Salaries what I found interesting is that there are 54 Administrative-Lecture or Administrative-Professor positions, or what really is the great Smith Hall Bureaucracy. I did not include the Professional-Lecture which adds even more.  Even more interesting is that on the lower end of the scale, whomever has those positions is not getting a living wage and most likely is working a 2nd or 3rd job or they are summer help.

Not sure what they all do, perhaps Slater can enlighten us.

America is Weak, and So are Her Leaders

I can safely say that we are in the decline of Rome.  Instead of being overtaken from the interior by an enemy who joined the ranks of our military.  We are succumbing to something that our parent nation would find despicable.

We no longer have a stiff upper lip, we no longer press for individuals to assert their responsibility and do everything they can to be someone.  Someone who will leave a mark.  This lack of back-bone can be ween with what happened in Charleston, say what you will, people became angry and emotional over a piece of cloth.  That is another subject entirely.  But today, it was announced that the POTUS will rename Mt Mckinley to Denali.  Political correctness is a parasite, and it is slowly causing the decay of the Republic.

The Great Train Beat-Down

This story, I tell you, is truly inspiring. I turn (improbably for me) to the NYT

Alek Skarlatos, a specialist in the National Guard from Oregon vacationing in Europe with a friend in the Air Force, Airman First Class Spencer Stone and another American, Anthony Sadler, looked up and saw the gunman. Mr. Skarlatos, who was returning from a deployment in Afghanistan, looked over at the powerfully built Mr. Stone, a martial arts enthusiast. “Let’s go, go!” he shouted.

Mr. Stone went after the heavily armed gunman and, with his friends, pounded him to the floor of the train carriage….

Well done, fellas. Stone deserves a Purple Heart, and I hope they all receive awards for valor.

Now, some points to consider from this little action:

  • The Long War is ongoing; the enemy will increasingly appear in unexpected places, so be alert
  • ACT; don’t wait for permission or worry about what might happen
  • You’re not unarmed if you move quickly and decisively
  • Don’t let up until your adversary is incapacitated or dead; this is no time for mercy
  • Don’t expect your adversary to be incompetent
  • Post security as soon as you can; don’t let your guard down
  • Expect to get hurt; make sure you have a small trauma kit

Again, well done, fellas! We’re proud of you!

Matriculation Day

 Happy  Matriculation Day!

Unlike some of the group I am a firm believer that they need to re-integrate more adversarial interactions during the rat-line, it can still be professional.  And if a Shit Eating Third or dumb Second crosses the line, then give them con pro and a 10-6-30.  But it is the hardest school, that puts out the best products, VMI graduates are akin to Demascus Steel, continuously beaten on the anvil and hardened.
