Pinball is a type of arcade game, usually coin-operated, in which points are scored by a player manipulating one or more steel balls on a play field inside a glass-covered cabinet called a pinball machine. The primary objective of the game is to score as many points as possible. Points are earned when the ball strikes different targets on the play field. A drain is situated at the bottom of the play field, partially protected by player-controlled plastic bats called flippers. A game ends after all the balls fall into the drain. Secondary objectives are to maximize the time spent playing (by earning "extra balls" and keeping the ball in play as long as possible) and to earn bonus games (known as "replays").
The origins of pinball are intertwined with the history of many other games. Games played outdoors by rolling balls or stones on a grass course, such as bocce or bowls, eventually evolved into various local ground billiards games played by hitting the balls with sticks and propelling them at targets, often around obstacles. Croquet, golf and paille-maille eventually derived from ground billiards variants.
A machine is a tool containing one or more parts that uses energy to perform an intended action. Machines are usually powered by mechanical, chemical, thermal, or electrical means, and are often motorized. Historically, a power tool also required moving parts to classify as a machine. However, the advent of electronics has led to the development of power tools without moving parts that are considered machines.
A simple machine is a device that simply transforms the direction or magnitude of a force, but a large number of more complex machines exist. Examples include vehicles, electronic systems, molecular machines, computers, television, and radio.
The word machine derives from the Latin word machina, which in turn derives from the Greek (Doric μαχανά makhana, Ionic μηχανή mekhane "contrivance, machine, engine", a derivation from μῆχος mekhos "means, expedient, remedy").
A wider meaning of "fabric, structure" is found in classical Latin, but not in Greek usage.
This meaning is found in late medieval French, and is adopted from the French into English in the mid-16th century.
A vending machine is a machine that dispenses items such as snacks, beverages, alcohol, cigarettes, lottery tickets to customers automatically, after the customer inserts currency or credit into the machine. The first modern vending machines were developed in England in the early 19th century and dispensed postcards.
The earliest known reference to a vending machine is in the work of Hero of Alexandria, a first-century AD Greek engineer and mathematician. His machine accepted a coin and then dispensed holy water. When the coin was deposited, it fell upon a pan attached to a lever. The lever opened a valve which let some water flow out. The pan continued to tilt with the weight of the coin until it fell off, at which point a counterweight snapped the lever up and turned off the valve.
Coin-operated machines that dispensed tobacco were being operated as early as 1615 in the taverns of England. The machines were portable and made of brass. An English bookseller, Richard Carlile, devised a newspaper dispensing machine for the dissemination of banned works in 1822. Simeon Denham was awarded British Patent no. 706 for his stamp dispensing machine in 1867, the first fully automatic vending machine.

This is the first part of a multi part series that shows the construction process of the 2 player pinball machine. It's a game where 2 players will duel sending marbles over the hill to their opponents side. Each player starts with 5 marbles and can decide when to bring them into play. This will be a really fun machine to play with family and friends. In this video, I reveal the theme of the machine to be Ice vs Fire, similar to Game of Thrones, and create a scale drawing to plan out the build. I can't wait to see how this project will turn out! Follow along as I build this machine! Music by: David Cutter Music - http://www.davidcuttermusic.com
Here's a machine that doesn't get a lot of love but if you can overlook the mad theme and suss out what you are supposed to be doing its actually ok, lots to do and shoot for, I quite like it but I have a soft spot for Oursler machines! :-)

Here's link to making of this machine. http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Star-Wars-Pinball-Machine/ Main reason why I started this project was that I wanted to learn making electronics for my projects. So I started digging internet how things work like transistors, capacitors, resistors, diodes etc... Then I ordered small starterpack which included breadboard, bunch of leds and other components. Also famous IC”555” was in that pack. That 555 came my new friend in world of electronics. Its so versatile tiny chip that can do almost anything. So I used it in many places in this project. Well I picked this up as I had one years ago (probably 12 or so) and don't really remember it. I do remember that I thought it was rubbish )although back then 2 pins were coming and going a week so they didn't hang around long) so imagine my surprise when its actually quite a cool game, happy days!!!! In a fit of madness though I watched the film again, bad move!

Quite a lot of you have asked me to make a tutorial for the flipper mechanism of my pinball machine that I made a video about a while back. Leave a comment below letting me know if this video was helpful to you!
I wanted something fun and unique to build for my next project and I came up with this. I fully designed and built a mechanical pinball machine out of oak and finished it off with several coats of tung oil to give it a nice shine. The goal of this channel is to teach others about woodworking in an interesting, informative, and succinct manner. My desire is to not only create awesome woodworking projects, but also highlight the process, tools, and tricks of the trade used to take a basic idea and turn it into a real piece of art. Woodworking has been my passion for over 40 years and I figured now is as good a time as any to share that knowledge, build a community, and make some random (but awesome) stuff. New videos are released every Friday! Feel free to suggest video or project ideas ...
History Channel visits Stern Pinball and joins in on manufacturing a pinball machine.
Caution: This video is looooooooooong. I took a lot of footage while I was at the Pinball Expo this year, so I've edited the footage I took of the individual pinball machines and sequenced them in order from newest to oldest. Theses are not all the pinball machines that were on display. I took footage of what I could given the time I was there. There were several machines that I could not get footage of for various reasons such as the machines being down or unavailable during the time I spent at the expo. That being said, here are the pins included in the video in order of appearance: Wizard of Oz - Jersey Jack (unreleased) Whoa Nellie! - Whizbang (unreleased) P3 - Multimorphic (unreleased) VirtuaPin Mini VirtuaPin X-Men Pro - Stern (2012) Spider-Man - Stern (2007) Wheel of Fortune ...

In this third video of the series, I explain how an electromechanical pinball machine is able to perform the complex tasks that it does. As I explain in the end of the video, electromechanical devices such as this pinball machine are controlled by altering the wiring of the machine as it runs. The relays that cause sequences are essentially redirecting the actions of a particular device through the score motor so that they happen either at a specific time or with a specific repetition. Electromechanics are pretty difficult to understand, but I hope that by showing you the various control devices and how they work together you can get somewhat of an idea. Feel free to ask questions about the machine's operation. I'll try to answer them in the comments as soon as I can. Looking for the or...

Tear that trickles from your eye to your ear
Like a pinball machine
Arm that melts over me
Like Salvador's dream
Light that spits across the ceiling
'Cos someone burst the stitches on the curtain of night
Maybe it's all about sowing my seed
But subject to conditions and not while you bleed
I follow you at a distance
Bounced through others eyes
Like a pinball machine
Dressed as Mr. Walker
But in disguise
I could have been a contender
But instead I'm content with
The gin and tonic dressing gown I lament
One night only
The great and the glory
Let's see if it sticks
You still love me
I believe
If push came you'd shove me
I believe you share my bed
You share the blame
